CAPTAIN MARVEL: Marvel Comics Will Introduce A New Binary This May When Carol Danvers Goes Missing

Marvel Comics has announced plans to introduce a new Binary, but while that's typically the form Carol Danvers takes when she powers up, this is a totally separate character! Find more details right here.

"The Last of the Marvels" storyline will reach its pulse-pounding conclusion in the pages of Kelly Thompson's Captain Marvel run next week, and the story has seen both the return of Genis-Vell and the reemergence of Carol Danvers' powerful cosmic form, Binary. However, this Binary isn’t Carol.

The mysterious origins and powers of this new version of Binary will be explored in an arc beginning in May's Captain Marvel #38 when the mysterious character takes over as Captain Marvel after Carol goes missing. You can see R.B. Silva's below along with Russell Dauterman’s original design sheets for Binary’s new look, a modern spin on the legendary Dave Cockrum's classic design.

Carol’s disappearance has left the newly sentient Binary to fill in, but stepping into the shoes of one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes is no easy feat. As Binary finds herself plunged into a world she barely understands, the questions about exactly who and what Binary will grow deeper.

"I'm really excited about this wild new arc for Carol and Binary - it's called 'Trials' - and lemme tell you, these ladies are going through it," Thompson said. "Carol Danvers' time as Binary was one of her most fascinating - and also one of her best and most powerful looks. And while Carol sometimes taps into that power - it's a name and look that's been just sitting on the shelf, unused - so we thought, why not have both? There's no reason we can't have Captain Marvel and also Binary."

"I was very happy to design this!" Dauterman adds. "I love Dave Cockrum’s original design (ever since I first saw Binary, when she punched Rogue through a roof!) — I wanted to keep that vibe, but modernize the look a bit and pull in some of Carol’s current iconography."

Captain Marvel #38 arrives in comic book stores on May 4.

Best thing Carol Danvers ever did was get energy drained by Rogue and put into a coma for 30 years.

@BlackBeltJones - I think she and Hal Jordan could bond over this, considering that was his status at DC for some time. (And some may say still is his status.)

@grif - In fairness, the character was created 40 years ago. (how time flies.) Chris Claremont was waaaay ahead of his time.

I love how Marvel pushes "Captain Marvel." Hey Marvel, it's not working. No one cares.

I was working all day and I just got off work and came here to see a story about the Book Of Boba Fett finale to chat and there’s nothing about it, yet there’s this story about Marvels most unliked character instead. 🤷‍♂️

For all those griping over Carol Danvers as a character, remember...those who have written her over the years have always added things to her decades-old publishing history that either rub people the wrong way or that they love, and those creators, for good or ill, live with those decisions every day. So, for once, how about not harping on her? The internet could use a breather...and I mean a lengthy breather. Some of these barbs and reactions are so stale they make the bread in my pantry seem fresher.

@FlixMentallo21 - think I'm one of the few that doesn't mind the character. Or in case of the MCU version, don't mind Brie Larson either

Kinda surprised this hasn't been done before actually. The idea is interesting, so here's hoping the ly can make it work

I always liked the Binary look. And the Ms Marvel look. I think the Capt Marvel iteration is my least favourite haha

Brie Larson has officially impressed me. She is so unlikable that MARVEL replaced her character in the comics! 👏👏👏 Bravo! The only thing left is to actually make her a villain. THAT is something I want to see. Who the f**k could stop her???
...*brainstorming* Carol has seen the beauty of so many civilizations in various galaxies and has lost all respect for the waste and unappreciative nature of the human race.
