COMICS: Excerpt From Jonathan Hickman's AVENGERS; "Because Of You, The World Changed"

As they did with Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen's All-New X-Men, Marvel has released an excerpt from Jonathan Hickman and Jerome Opeña "Marvel NOW!" Avengers series, featuring an exchange between Captain America and Iron Man.

It looks like we're in for another week of teasers from Marvel, this time in the form of more script excerpts. While Jonathan Hickman's Avengers isn't shrouded in anywhere near as much secrecy as All-New X-Men was (and arguably still is), this will at least give us a good look at Jerome Opeña's incredible pencils for the series. What do you guys think Steve and Tony could be talking about? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Panel 3 - Tony, looking over at Steve -- at his BROTHER.

IRON MAN

I remember everything about that day.

(tail)

We started something that mattered. Because of you, the world changed.

(tail)

I changed.

Shame on you Shamo. Hickman's Fantastic Four run has been the best thing since the departure of Lee and King.

Well, let's count it out. Steve was a deciding factor that ended WWII, has been a founding member of the Avengers, took a stand against the government in Civil War, and has proven in the Marvel U that a super soldier serum works.

Cap is NOT a founding member of the Avengers unless they are retconning even that now too!

That wouldn't surprise me because the only universe in which he WAS around for the founding of the Avengers is the Marvel Films universe and it seems the 616 is being rewritten and every character redesigned to copy that one. Sad, sad, sad, that the original gets dumped for the replacement. As much as I liked the Avengers film, it's truly been a curse for Marvel Comics readers.

niknik: I also dislike the idea of retconning the comics to fit in with movie continuity. If anything, the movies should fit closer to the comics, to capture the essence of what made these characters interesting in the first place. I love the Avengers movie and most of its lead-ins (Iron Man 2 could have been better), but I don't like how the comics and cartoons are being forced to conform to it. This failed idea has already cost us the indescribably excellent Avengers:EMH on Disney XD.

Agreed. If they were dead set on completely redesigning the comic book universe to pattern it after the cinematic universe, why in the hell didn't they use the Ultimate universe for that? It's not the original so you wouldn't be pissing off every reader over the age of 35, and it's closer to the cinematic universe anyway.

I thought they learned their lesson with Heroes Reborn when they took it in the shorts from that debacle and they started the Ultimate Universe as a stand alone but now they do it again with MarvelNow. The industry is on thin ice right now and this may be the tipping point.
