Marvel Comics May Have Just Undone "One More Day" Ahead Of Avengers #1 Launch - Spoilers

Marvel Comics may have just opened the door to undoing "One More Day," and with Mephisto's deals nullified in today's Captain America #16, could Peter Parker and Mary Jane get their marriage back?

The fall of Doctor Doom in One World Under Doom left a power vacuum in Latveria. In the pages of Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti's Captain America, Steve Rogers suffered a near-fatal injury amid the ensuing struggle for control.

While Cap's body fell into a coma, his consciousness was dragged to Hell by Doom, who needed the protection of Steve's noble soul to overthrow Mephisto's tyrannical rule and replace him with a more benevolent demon named Veratok. Steve reluctantly agreed to help.

Doom led the rebels to the Antidivine, a weapon capable of slaying angels, where his scorned love, Valeria, attempted to stop them. However, she switched sides when Doom appeared genuinely remorseful. Steve defeated Mephisto's other agent, Red Skull, but the Antidivine was shattered during the battle. Undeterred, the rebels pressed on towards Mephisto's throne, only to find themselves hopelessly outmatched.

Rather than destroy Steve and Doom, Mephisto offered them both a deal. He promised to restore Doom to life in exchange for being allowed to torture Valeria for eternity. Doom accepted, betraying Valeria once again. Steve, meanwhile, was offered freedom for everyone on Earth except himself. He agreed to the terms, willingly surrendering his soul to the Devil.

In today's Captain America #16, the battle with Mephisto culminates with Doom wrestling control of Hell from the Devil to remain in the afterlife as its new ruler. Steve, meanwhile, is returned to the land of the living, as is the Red Skull.

However, before that happens, Doom reveals that all of Mephisto's deals have been nullified. That should extend to "One More Day," the controversial Amazing Spider-Man storyline from 2008, which ended with Peter Parker and Mary Jane agreeing to give up their marriage in exchange for Aunt May's life (she'd been gunned down by an assassin hired by The Kingpin).

Reality was subsequently rewritten to make it so that Peter and MJ lived out their relationship without ever having married, and it was hinted that Mephisto wanted to stop their future daughter from ever being born because she'd eventually defeat him as Spider-Girl.

There have already been hints that Zdarsky intends to address "One More Day" in his new Avengers series, as that will pit Spider-Man's new team against the villain with New York seemingly on the line. Is the door finally being opened to Spidey and MJ resuming their romance? There's been nothing in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man to suggest that's the case, meaning it may fall to Zdarsky to finally end this hated status quo.

Spider-Man comics have sucked for the past 20 years, all due to the one more day nonsense. It's time to give Peter, MJ, and readers a much needed break. Restore the marriage.

Holy fcking shit!

I read this today and I was thinking about all the ramifications, Ghost Rider, Doom's mom etc. etc. and not once did it occur to me that OMD would be nullified.

That's dope.

Gotta admit that whatever Chip Zdarksy is planning across the comics he is assigned to write it is intriguing to keep up with them.

I am curious as to what are gonna be the ramifications of enabling Doom to be the ruller of Hell, what does that mean for his long-time foes the Fantastic Four especially. I wonder if some will give Steve the side-eye for volunteering to give him a hand even if it meant to take out Mephisto.

Zdarsky also almost got Cap in a similar situation like not just Peter (although it's also said that the one that made the deal with the Devil was Mary Jane) but also Miles, Ben Reilly and Octavious did with making a bargain with Mephisto. That would've been just as sketchy.

Then again I only ever see the dirt be thrown at Spider-Man but never much with the others, imagine my surprirse when I found out that MILES did a deal too to bring back his fellow Champion heroes at the cost of another innocent bystander's life he previously saved, yet that never was discussed much of how detrimental it must've been. Wow. D:

Doom looks pretty badass-er as ruler, his design is giving one-winged angel Sephiroth with those wings behind him IMO.

I am curious though if Mephisto used or not his "Thor of Hell" in this Hell's Angel arc that he claimed as the bargain he made with Hela when he helped her in the prequel of Queen of Black by enslaving Red Norvell?

And as for undoing/addressing One More Day I remain cautious. Another writer attempted it already years ago in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man (Nick Spencer) with mixed results and all because Marvel editorial caught wind of what he was doing right on time. Would Nick Lowe, who is still in charge of said editorial (or at least of the Spider-Man branch one), hasn't backed down on keeping that status quo and has said it's not being unmade. What could be the difference this time?

I will also play a bit of the devil's advocate here (pun) in arguing that what if what Doom meant in those pages was just what meant for all those souls that were there in Hell that signed a contract with Mephisto and now can choose instead of not specific cases like the of OMD? Because if we go down that road, what does that mean for Ghost Rider's origin?

What about these particular contracts/deals? Are they now also nulled?

And like Josh said nothing so far in Joe Kelly's current run in The Amazing Spider-Man alludes to this. As far as I know he is still dealing with Ravage, then there'll be a small Rhino and Damage Control arc and in April a crossover storyline where Peter and Miles fight because some of Peter's choices lately by then will have to be reigned in. Make out of that what you will, but it isn't hinting anywhere of living in a post OMD world.

I wonder if this is all just meant to give Mephisto the biggest earful for all he's done and not necessarily undo that controversial story, yet. I am still a believer that if it has do then it must be where it happened, in Spidey's book. Peter has a brilliant brain and can be considered aa genius on Reed's level (aka that should put hiim in Victor's own level) and he did took on Parker Industries after Otto started it and kept it going nicely for a while.

As a Spider-Man fan part of me can't help but wonder if he couldn't come up with his own strategy to take back what Mephisto took from them. Under a good writer obviously. And hell even if it means playing dirty because that's how Mephisto always works then he'd have the same right do fight fire with fire, so I never discounted a scenerio where pulling a heist on Hell to get his marriage back would be an option. And no one better to get that unique score than one of his trusted and closest allies in Black Cat.

Well Zdarksy has been making a solid case to keep up with his run so I will try my best to do exactly that.
