Marvel Won't Release Any New Digital Comics This Week As Diamond Comic Distributors Closure Continues

Shortly after it was revealed that DC Comics won't be releasing any new titles this week, we have word that Marvel Comics has also decided against publishing its monthly comic books on digital platforms...

This shouldn't come as a surprise, but CBR is reporting that Marvel Comics won't release any new comic book titles digitally on April 8th. That means it's the second week in a row the publisher has decided against that after Diamond Comic Distributors were forced to halt the shipment in new physical comics due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley noted that, "This is a fluid situation with details changing every day, so we appreciate your patience and understanding as we all navigate our way through this. As soon as more information is available, we will outline our longer-term plans and opportunities to support you and the industry."

For now, it appears as if no firm decisions have been made, but this comes at a bad time for Marvel Comics as the upcoming Empyre event was expected to do well over the coming months.

Diamond Comic Distributors CEO Steve Geppi recently released a statement on the pandemic's disruption of the market, and promised, "work with our publishing partners to develop programs that will address product already in the pipeline and what will happen when we resume distribution."

It's clear that physical comic books won't be going on sale for a while (most comic book stores have been forced to close anyway), so we're now forced to wait and see when it comes to whether the big two publishers - Marvel and DC Comics - will change tact and move to digital only sales for a while.

I love how every one suddenly realizes that Diamond distribute everything when they're looking for someone to blame about the now inevitable collapse of smaller retailers.

I don't love that actually. I'm just pointing it out.

A monopoly on something as niche, incestuous and low key as comics is not the typical big evil monopoly that everyone seems to be making it out to be.

More like getting your elderly neighbours groceries while your at the store. It's just more convenient and less chaotic. It's just nice and helpful.

Stopping print distribution is actually the ethical thing to do right now. They're choosing human lives over an economy (unlike a lot of world leaders).

It's not Diamond that's putting retailers in danger. It's Covid!

And I'm not just saying that because I want them to release more digital comics.
(Which I'm sure we could all do with right about now instead of having tons of back issues to catch up on when we no longer have the time to read them. If anything's gonna hurt retailers it's that; Forcing them to buy months worth of comics all at once that nobody's gonna buy).

@GwenLantern - I don’t think when they resume they’ll just release them all at once, probably at the same pace just a couple months later than originally planned.

@TheUnworthyThor - Hope so, because Comixology keeps listing everything for June 20.

@GwenLantern - It's probably just a placeholder date. June 20 isn't even a Wednesday.

People are so doom and gloom. Comic books aren’t going anywhere. Comic book stores aren’t going anywhere. Will a few smaller publishers fold up? Probably. Will some comic book stores close up shop? Almost certainly. But eventually someone else will open a shop in that area if the market was still there. Someone will buy up the assets of the publishers and start producing their own comics.

We’re not talking about things that sell millions of copies. We’re not talking about things that need to sell million of copies. They are cheap enough to produce that the hardcore market is large enough to sustain a wide range of titles. And all the smart shops have long since diversified so that comics are only a portion of their income.

@TheUnworthyThor - You're probably right. I'm still gonna want my comics. You'll still want your comics. The audience will still be there. Comics fans are lifers. Bigger shops will still be around, like Golden Apple and Forbidden Planet and Jay and Bob's. And other small businesses will start up, too, like they always have done.

In a way, I suppose DC/Marvel/IDW/etc. are doing the right thing, because the real danger is that fans change their buying habits (by getting their pull list online rather than physical) due to an extended Quarantine period.

I personally love digital comics. Nice bright read. I can zoom in on artwork. It last forever and never fades. I’m not constantly shifting long boxes around in my home.

Also, a lot of indy artists self-publish comics on digital more than they ever did in print and there some cool little titles out there.
