Writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Marco Checchetto's bold new take on Ultimate Spider-Man is shaping up to be full of surprises and when it launches next January, it will star a very different Peter Parker. He'll be an older, wiser web-slinger who balances his superhero duties with his responsibilities as a husband and a father. That's right, Spider-Man is a married man!

"Meet Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson - Mr. & Mrs. Parker," reads the official description for the series. "They’re one of pop culture’s most iconic couples, and now readers will see them stronger than ever in the Ultimate Universe."

That's a development which has already led to an increase in excitement for the relaunched title and we now have the cover for Ultimate Spider-Man #2. With that comes confirmation the new Ultimate Universe will include a wildly different, yet suitably sinister, version of Peter's greatest foe, the Green Goblin.

Marvel Comics hasn't shared many details, but the cover below was accompanied by a brief blurb that reads, "On sale in February, the issue introduces the new Ultimate Universe’s Green Goblin as the most surprising Spider-Man story of the 21st century continues!"

When the original Ultimate Universe debuted, it too introduced a reimagining of the Green Goblin. That Norman Osborn transformed into a demonic Hulk-like creature who could throw flames from his hands. Years later, he killed Peter Parker, ushering in a new era of storytelling revolving around Miles Morales.

As for this Goblin, we have no real idea what to expect. Hickman's Ultimate Universe is vastly different from what's come before so we can't even say for sure whether that's Norman beneath the helmet.

Either way, this Goblin is more in line with the version from Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man movie than either the classic Marvel Universe or Earth-1610's monstrous take on the villain.

The cover also showcases the older Peter, though we still don't know whether he's bitten by that spider as a teenager (making him a veteran superhero) or if he gains his spectacular abilities as an adult and is forced to figure out how to balance being a family man with newly discovered superpowers.

Check out this first look at Ultimate Spider-Man #2 below and stay tuned for updates as we have them.

guess its better than Hulk Goblin

but feels like they are taking too much from Raimi in terms of the design

I can see this working in a movie

not every comic design works in live action, but the opposite is also true, not every live action design works in comics

In live action you need believable materials and textures to look good

replicating that in comics can look really bland and limiting

@DiegoMD - I HATED the Mighty Morphin Power Gobby in the original Raimi film, liked it at least a little in NWH but this for some reason intrigues me. Plus it looks like there might be a covering over the nose and mouth that may come off at some point and reveal the Goblin face.

Man Peter being bitten by the spider as an adult would such an interesting storytelling path to go down. Definitely would be interested in seeing that play out.

The Raimi Goblin design is already flawed (although, I don't outright hate it or anything, just to be clear), but this is even worse version of that. Taking out the monster face for just a bland metal plate makes this look even more generic and less like the character.

wait... so is this the same Ultimate Universe as before? I know I'm behind on comics and all, but I'm pretty confused about what's going on here.
Origame

@Demigods - no. It's an entirely different universe that's being called the ultimate universe and has the same basic premise of starting the universe from scratch in modern times.

@Origame - OHHH okay. I see now.... Kind of wondering if the should have called it something other than the Ultimate Universe then lol.
Origame
Origame - 11/13/2023, 4:52 AM
@Demigods - I'm guessing it's justified because the maker is trying to make this universe into his ultimate universe.

@Origame - maybe... but if someone called the next superman movie: Man of Steel, everyone would think "that's a stupid thing to call it if you wanted to distance yourself from the story that precluded this one by the same exact name."

Hell, even if it was "New Ultimate Universe" or something to differentiate it from the one before, anything would be a bit better. I get that, as comic fans in the Information Age, it's easy enough to figure it out, just by looking it up...
Actually, I just got the marketing ploy that I fell victim to... have people ask the same exact question I asked, and drum up conversations exactly like this. Smart.

@Demigods - I agree. I'm not defending it. Just trying to rationalize the thought process.

Will never not be upset with how things "ended" with HiX-men.
