Following Krakoa's fall, it will be a dangerous time to be a mutant in the Marvel Universe. Luckily, Cyclops plans to step up to lead a formidable new team of heroes in writer Jed MacKay and artist Ryan Stegman's X-Men #1.

Today, you can see three new variant covers for the debut issue. The first of three flagship titles set in the X-Men's "From the Ashes" era, these covers are illustrated by some top-tier talent,

First, we have a group shot by celebrated X-Men artist Tony Daniel, a Psylocke character spotlight by J. Scott Campbell that will also be available as a virgin variant cover, and a hidden gem piece by the legendary George Pérez, whose iconic depiction of Beast during his time with the Avengers inspired Stegman's take on the character.

In MacKay and Stegman's X-Men, mutant business is Cyclops' business as the first X-Man makes it his mission to keep hope alive for the species - by any means necessary. Cyclops' group includes some of his most trusted soldiers like Psylocke, Magik, and Beast, the brightest of the next generation including Kid Omega and Temper, along with powerhouses like Magneto and Juggernaut.

Raising a flag of defiance at their new base in Alaska, everyone in the world will soon know that if they want to go after mutantkind, they'll have to go through them first.

"Taking on the X-Men is always a daunting prospect, but I'm extremely psyched to take this team of mutants back into the world with Ryan!" MacKay previously said.

"When I first got into comics, drawing X-Men was the job you wanted as an artist," Stegman added. "To have the opportunity now is mind-blowing."

With three flagship titles and a host of additional satellite series, the upcoming "From the Ashes" era will present us with a wide range of different approaches to the X-Men’s mission statement.

Gail Simone and David Marquez's Uncanny X-Men delivers globetrotting superhero adventures as the X-Men show the world all the good mutantkind can accomplish and Eve L. Ewing and Carmen Carnero's Exceptional X-Men focuses on the trials and training young mutants need to undergo to survive in a world against them.

I do wonder over time, how Magneto’s back story will alter. The holocaust feels like such a key part of his backstory, I wonder if they’ll retcon it to include some kind of time jump or add in a slow aging power. Or maybe they’ll alter it completely and change his background to be Rwanda or something.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they dipped their toe into that last one, but I couldn’t see it sticking.

@Cass - It would be a big mistake to change his backstory and there's no need. Slow aging is a possibility as you said, but also a new body via cloning, some sciene-y stuff that rejuvenates him, literal magic... so many options

@Cass - They don't need to ever change his backstop in the comics because time moves as needed in comics.

Also, when it comes to Magneto, back in the late 80's there was a story where he was transformed back into a baby, and then when they aged him back up, they aged him up to a younger age. So he's not like in his 70's in the comics.

But again, time is different for everything in the comics. I remember in the first Illuminati appearance in the 2000's they were talking about huge events like Infinity Gauntlet and the Kree/Skrull War as if they only happened a fee years earlier.

And Kitty Pryde's age is a good way yo see this also. In her first appearance she was like 14, I believe. Then about a year later she had a birthday and became 15. Then in another issue a little later she turned 16. But in real time, between those birthdays, there were a ton of huge Marvel stories that happened. Which couldn't have been over the course of 2 years.

Clearly the second one was drawn by a fan of Alan Davis
