Marvel or DC? Why Must We Fight?

Marvel or DC? Why Must We Fight?

The supposed reasons as to why one is better than the other, and they are debunked.

Ok, well in the last two days I have been caught as the neutral fan in a Marvel vs DC fanboy war among my friends. They decided that since I was a neutral fan, that I should be the judge of "which is better." They gave their arguments and I wrote a report as to why both of them are wrong, both companies have awesome stories and good characters. After I wrote this and showed this to them, both sides admitted that they are wrong and neither is superior to the other. These are the "supposed" reasons why Marvel or DC is better than the other, and I debunk them. Please enjoy!!

DCpedian: "Marvel has totally ripped DC off."

One of the big arguments that DC fanboys use, is to say that DC came first and Marvel is a rip off. After all look at Plasticman and Mister Fantastic, Green Arrow and Hawkeye, or Deathstroke and Deadpool. However this argument is as stupid as much as it is untrue, look at it the other way like Wolverine and Lobo, Ironman and Steel, or Galactus and Imperiex. I could just as easily say that DC has ripped off Marvel, and it would be just as untrue and stupid as the other way around. Also if we wanna get into fight about who came first, Lee Falk was around writing Mandrake the Magician and The Phantom before Superman ever came around. I believe that just because two heroes are similar does NOT mean one is a ripoff of the other. Both companies are awesome in their own way, and to call one a ripoff of the other is a total injustice.

Marvelite: "DC's characters are overpowered."

An argument that Marvel fanboys will use to attack DC, is to say that DC's characters are overpowered. At first it seems like a valid argument. Look at Doctor Manhattan and Martian Manhunter. They are both ultra powerful beings who can do almost anything, look at Superman who can move planets. Wonder Woman is in the same league as Superman, Flash can reverse time, and Green Lantern can create pretty much anything out of his ring. This seems valid at first but we must look closer at Marvel's heroes. My initial answer for this one is "Yeah.. and Marvel heroes aren't ?" The truth is that Marvel's heroes are just as "overpowered" as DC's. Silver Surfer wields the power cosmic, which gives him potentially limtless power. Thor is the god of thunder and lightning, who can strike anyone at any moment. The Sentry has the power of a thousand suns, Hulk has anger issues which means his strength is unlimited. Professor X can read and control mostly everyone's minds. Shall I go on? So for a crazed Marvel fanboy to say that DC's heroes are overpowered is hypocritical, a DC fanboy could make the exact same argument as that. The way I see it, they both have incredibly powerful characters. For either side to say that the other is "overpowered" is hypocritical.

DCpedian: "Marvel's origin stories are all science based, while DC created entire worlds and universes."

Another argument that DCpedians will use to bash Marvel is to say that Marvel's characters are all earth-based, while DC's came from many other universes. However this argument is totally invalid, while it is true that Marvel has a few more science based heroes. To say that all of Marvel's heroes are science based is a terrible argument, how about Loki and Thor? They both came from Asgard and are main characters in the Marvel universe. How about Namor? He is from Atlantis, how about Captain Mar-Vell? He is from an alien race. How about Silver Surfer? and more, Marvel has plenty of heroes that are not science or even Earth based. As does DC, both have extra-terrestrial/dimensional characters and both have science/earth based characters.

Marvelite: "DC's characters are cheesy."

Yet another anti-DC argument that Marvelites try to use is to say that DC's heroes are cheesy. After they do have the big blue boy scout, and Aquaman, Silly looking dudes from other planets as well. However this argument is invalid because Marvel has their share of cheesy characters too, Captain America is not cheesy? He's awesome but he is cheesy. Spider-Man is not cheesy? He owns his cheesiness and turns it into a weapon of psychological warfare. It is my conclusion that both sides have their share of cheesy and not so cheesy heroes, and by the way what is so wrong with being cheesy anyway?

Both: "DC/Marvel (either one) just has better stories."

An argument used by both sides is to say that one company's stories are much better than the other. However this argument is invalid and dumb, the reason being because it is totally subjective. We are all subjective in which stories we choose. Now we are all entitled to opinions, in my opinion Hulk, Batman and Spider-Man have the best stories. However someone else could say "In my opinion Superman, Thor and Aquaman have the best stories." They are correct, and I am correct, because it's all about opinions. It is perfectly fine to say "I just like DC better." or "I think Marvel has good stories." But to use that as an argument as to why either company's stories are better than the other is an invalid argument because it is completely subjective.

My question for everyone is: Why must we choose one side or the other? It's okay to just like one side better, but why is it that in order to love DC we must hate Marvel? Or vice versa?

Those were the five main points that have come up, well you guys tell me. Are my points valid? Also this article is intended to clear up all the DC vs Marvel fanboy garbage. So if any of that gets started in here, I will be removing this article. Please leave your opinion in the comment box, however please try to refrain from starting a fanboy war.

Why are your paragraphs so spaced-out? Do you have pics included, or does my computer just suck, lol? Good article, as a neutral fan of comics as well, I must say the DC/Marvel battle is really dumb. I read both companies' comics, as well as Image Comics...if it's(heroes, stories, etc.) good, its good. Let's just enjoy what the CB world gives us instead of appealing to brand royalty.

They are spaced out just because each paragraph is a different point to be made.

Great stuff. I feel we are all comic book fans either way, anyone who blindly follows one company and not the other is very small minded, because they are missing out on great stories and great characters .

i'm a neutral fan as well, but i love listening to the arguments. from time to time it's fun to play devil's advocate. i say let the competition continue. it helps foster change and progress.

i don't think anyone is 100% loyal to one company.i enjoy comics, animation & films from both companies.i admit i may be bias towards marvel but i've been reading them for years & i prefer their products.

if you want to read something that is great from a different company, pick up image comics saga its gonna win loads of awards in the future.

I think the whole DC/MARVEL war is dumb too, while I will admit and say I haven't really helped the situation any quite a few times. Whether it be on here or in person. I prefer Marvel over any other company and my favorite superhero is Spider-Man. If someone disagrees, then okay. It's their opinion. I don't like Aquaman and find him useless and get bashed on this site for it. It's quite ridiculous. I prefer Marvel movies but that doesn't make them better than DC, vice versa. I can say that The Avengers is the greatest superhero movie ever and someone else can say that The Dark Knight is the greatest superhero movie ever. It's opinion.

Good article man :)

You forgot the "DC did it first, Marvel did it better." argument that imbecilic Marvel fanboys make. Still a great article. Personally, I sway a lot more towards DC.

The whole point is, as long as these two companies exist, ghere will ALWAYS be a rivalry being them and their respective fanbase. Just gotta learn to get used to it.

Nice points made there. I love both DC and Marvel equally, even though my favourite is Batman, unfortunately at the moment I'm preferring DC's comics but I'm also preferring Marvels movies, still they are both just as good as each other.

Marvel has better overall character development. Everyone has some every day problems and some issues in their past that they have learned for or are trying to learn from. To me that is a major part of story telling and making the characters easier to relate to.

i used to be a fan of both, till I came to this websit and i quickly realised that marvel fanboys are full of crap and are the worst haters in the history of comic book fans. They are bad for the industry, over critquing anything not made by marvel yet letting some of the fantastic and just plain outrageous elements of marvel things fly without so much of mention.

Their movies do nothing to advance the genre instead they are hell bent on reducing comic books to the level of Power rangers, while the avengers was a hit it is basically a brash smash-em whose novelty is based on the curiosity of seeing these characters on screen at the same time any discerning fan would quickly realise that it is the most cliched story and in fact rips-off transformers scenes in abundance.

Slowly but surely marvel is being 'disneyfied' I can see it in how all their animated characters are either being drawn or turned into high schoolers (iron man armoured adventures, spectacular spiderman) i can see where its going just remember I said it first.
