There are plenty of fantastic titles on offer this week (with most of them listed at the end of the article) but these are my picks from DC and Marvel for January 22nd 2014.

BATMAN #27
DC COMICS / WRITER Scott Snyder ART & COVER Greg Capullo, Danny Miki PRICE $3.99

Zero Year continues! By now, you’re probably well aware of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s modern “rock ‘n’ roll” origin remix, but just in case you’re not - this is a bold new spin on Batman, with fresh takes on characters, locations and tropes. Things ramp us as Batman and Jim Gordon try to turn the lights back on in a (literally) dark Gotham, but I’m willing to bet things will go badly. Every other chapter of this arc has been a knock out of the park, and I’m certain this issue will be no different.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #27
DC COMICS / WRITER Geoff Johns ART Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Jesus Merino, Vicente Cifuentes, Rod Reis COVER Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Rod Reis, Jon Katz PRICE $3.99

Forever Evil has been a blast, thanks in some part to the great tie-in stories in Justice League: we’ve seen Geoff Johns put his spin on Ultraman, Owlman, Superwoman, and the for the next three months we’ll be focusing on Cyborg. I’m very happy to see Ivan Reis return to the drawing board with this issue, as his art is one of the high points of the series, and with each issue I’m getting more and more excited for the future of the DCnU.

ALL NEW X-MEN #22.NOW
MARVEL / WRITER Brian Michael Bendis ART & COVER Stuart Immonen PRICE $3.99

All New X-Men has been one of my favourite titles of the Marvel NOW! line, and has kick-started my love for the X-Men as a whole. Issue #22.NOW is the first chapter of The Trial of Jean Grey, a space-set crossover with the Guardians of the Galaxy that sees Jean go on trial (duh) and only the X-Men and the Guardians can save her! With Stuart Immonen back on art duties, and Brian Michael Bendis penning both series, the issue is set to be another treat.

BLACK WIDOW #2
MARVEL / WRITER Nathan Edmondson ART Phil Noto COVER Phil Noto, Frank Cho PRICE $3.99

The first issue was surprisingly engaging - simple and slick, this solo title focus on perhaps Marvel’s most famous spy doing her spy thang. This issue promises that things will go wrong - always something that draws me in - and Natasha will have to fight for her life. I’m glad Marvel are also taking more artist opportunities; Phil Noto’s unique style is a plus in my book. If this issue continues the strong standard of the first, then we might have a must-buy on our hands.

If those didn’t interest you, here’s a bunch of other titles heading to the shelves this week:
Batman & Two-Face #27, Wonder Woman #27, Harley Quinn #2, Supergirl #27, Green Lantern: New Guardians #27, Batwoman #27, Trinity of Sin: Pandora #7, Avengers #25, All-New X-Factor #2, Origin II #2, Avengers World #2, Hawkeye #16, Wolverine & the X-Men #40, All-New Invaders #1, Iron Man #20.INH and FF #16. Phew. It’s a big week.

What are you looking to pick up this week?
