CONSTANTINE 2: Keanu Reeves Reveals How He Nagged Warner Bros. To Finally Make A Sequel To 2005 Movie

Following the news that Constantine 2 is finally in the works at Warner Bros., Hellblazer himself, Keanu Reeves, has now revealed where things stand with the sequel and how his persistence made it happen.

Last year, we learned that John Wick star Keanu Reeves will reprise the role of John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 movie. Francis Lawrence is stepping back into the director's chair, while Akiva Goldsman has been tapped to work on the screenplay with him.

Constantine may have Americanized DC Comics' Hellblazer, but the movie's following has only increased since it was first released. As for Reeves, he's more popular now than ever before.

Whether this planned sequel will fit into what DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are plotting for the DCU remains to be seen, but excitement for the follow-up remains high.

Now, on the eve of DC Studios' initial slate being revealed to the world, Reeves has shed some light on how his persistence played a role in getting Warner Bros. to make this long-awaited sequel.

"I don't know if it was unfinished business but it was definitely a role that I loved. And I thought that Francis Lawrence, the director, did such amazing work," he tells Total Film (via /Film). "I loved playing that character, and I really enjoyed the film. I was like, [adopts Oliver Twist voice] 'Can I please have some more?'"

"I kept asking almost every year," Reeves adds. "I'd be like, 'Can I please?' [and] they'd be like, 'No, no!'"

Adding that the team working on Constantine 2 is "just starting to try and put a story together," Reeves somewhat tempered expectations by making it clear it's still early days for this one.

"It's exciting. It's almost like an open playground that we can hopefully cook something up and play in, and I guess get out of the playground and prepare a meal. But I'm looking forward to it, and hopefully it can happen. You don't know how these things go. But I'm definitely going to try my darndest to try and realise that dream."

So, it's still in the works, but clearly far from guaranteed at this stage. It would be a shame for the movie to fall by the wayside, but last year's announcement did seem a little too good to be true!

It's certainly possible Reeves will be the DCU's Constantine, especially as Warner Bros. Discovery has scrapped J.J. Abrams' HBO Max series starring Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù. If so, fans will need to accept that this version of the character is American, but it wasn't a huge issue over a decade and a half ago, so we're sure it won't be too controversial, especially with Reeves returning.

Constantine 2 doesn't currently have a release date.

If you erase any expectation of "Hellblazer" from the production - all established history - character - every title: it stands up as a good film in its own right.

But for long-term 'Hellblazer' fans ...

That's a BIG if.

@BillyBatson1000 - honestly, for the longest time I didn't even knew this was a DC Comics adaptation. It stands on it's own really well

@bkmeijer1 - Agreed. I had to balance my love of the original character with that point as I was watching - and I had to admit - I still enjoyed the film. It works.

I mean, that's pretty much every capeshit that people constantly insist are the best of the best.

@Reeds2Much - I cannot argue with that theory. You've pretty-much nailed it.

Think it would be pretty funny if they made this the DCU's first movie (and The Batman the second) retroactively.

James Gunn to me seems like the weird nerd that resented the good looking muscular jocks in high school. The fact Keanu is coming back under the new DCU seems like a slap in the face and his way of getting back at those types of ppl by cutting Dwayne and Henry. Dave Beautista was an exception because he willing to act like a complete clown of a character for Gunn

Is this really still happening though?

Has James Gunn decided to make this as part of his slate or has this one gone over his head, like Joker?

I wish we knew what the [frick] was going on at all. Maybe this will be announced as part of his slate reveal.

Chances of a slate reveal today: 50%.

@ObserverIO - I think at this point they're rolling dice.

Has to be a little bit better than 'The Sandman's' gender-flipped version. I get that Jenna Coleman is a draw (and we've only seen one season). But where was the character? Constantine, as written, is endlessly cynical, reckless and self-sabotaging. Even when he's acting out of good-will, he regularly gets his friends into disastrous situations - often ending in their death. If he was a real-life person, you'd avoid them.

Constantine was a little gem of a movie. I went in with low expectations and really enjoyed the ride. American audiences would not be able to understand a geographically accurate John Constantine and Keanu (limited as he is) did a great take on world weary but relentless, indifferent yet committed, caring but cynical.

I like it.

Figure it out. Get it done Gunn.
