While it was believed JJ Abrams' Bad Robot Productions may have been working on a new Constantine film, Deadline has now confirmed that they're actually in the early stages of developing a streaming series that is being described as a darker reboot compared to anything that's come before.
British novelist Guy Bolton has written the pilot and is expected to serve as head writer on the series, with the larger writers' room tentatively scheduled to open sometime in March.
DHD's story also confirms yesterday's report that HBO Max and Bad Robot are actively searching for a diverse actor to play the lead character, which is a considerable departure from the source material and from the versions previously played by Keanu Reeves (Constantine) and Matt Ryan (Constantine [NBC]; Legends of Tomorrow).
Bolton has written two books, The Pictures, which recently sold to David Mackenzie's Sigma Films (Hell or High Water; Outlaw King), and The Syndicate. He is also in the middle of developing another series titled The Croupier with Lookout Point and Sky (Gentleman Jack).
In addition to this latest Constantine reboot, Bad Robot has also announced a Justice League Dark series, and while it's still way too early to know for sure, it's probably not a stretch to assume the two shows may be linked in some capacity.
