Earlier this year, we learned that John Wick star Keanu Reeves will reprise the role of John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 movie. Francis Lawrence is set to step back into the director's chair, while Akiva Goldsman has been tapped to work on the screenplay with him.

Constantine may have Americanized DC Comics' Hellblazer, but the movie's following has only increased since it was first released. As for Reeves, he's more popular now than ever before.

Whether this movie will fit into what DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran have planned for the DCU remains to be seen, but Lawrence seems confident it will become a reality. Talking to ComicBook.com about his and Jason Momoa's new movie, Slumberland, the filmmaker revealed where things stand with the sequel.

"We don't have a script, but Keanu, me, and Akiva [Goldsman] who all worked on the first one together have all been trying over the years to get another one going," Lawrence reveals. "It's been tricky because of the DC/Vertigo world and who owns the character and who has control over the characters, trying to get the right people to go forward."

"We've got that now and now we need the story," he added, suggesting Constantine 2 definitely has the green light. "We'd all love to do it."

It's looking highly likely that Reeves will be the DCU's Constantine, especially as Warner Bros. Discovery has scrapped J.J. Abrams' HBO Max series starring Ṣọpẹ Dìrísù. That might mean we'll need to accept that this version of the character is American, but it didn't bother fans too much over a decade and a half ago, so we're sure it won't be too much of an issue.

Regardless, it's still early days for this one, so fingers crossed it doesn't fall by the wayside. As of right now, we don't know what sort of slate DC Studios is mapping out for the DCU.

Constantine 2 doesn't currently have a release date, so stay tuned for updates.
