BOX OFFICE: Cowboys & Aliens In A Race With The Smurfs For #1; Captain America $25M For The Weekend!

In a somewhat surprising results for Friday/early Saturday box office, Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens is expected to get around $40M this weekend, and it's in a close race with The Smurfs for #1 spot!

Another weird box office results...It seems that The Smurfs and Cowboys & Aliens are in a race for #1 spot this weekend, because both films are expected to get around $40M, while Captain America: The First Avenger will probably be #3 with around $25M. But this could all change, and we won't know the confirmed numbers until Monday.

The good thing for Captain America is that the film managed to make enough money during the week, so even with $25M it will be on $110M mark after one week.

From Deadline:

1. Cowboys & Aliens [3,750 Runs]- Friday $13M, Estimated Weekend $40M

1. The Smurfs - 3D [3,395 Runs]- Friday $13M, Estimated Weekend $40M

3. Captain America - 3D [3,715 Runs]- Friday $7.5M (-68%), Estimated Weekend $25M, Estimated Cume $110M

Cap is still doing great and I have a feeling it will do a slow grind at the box office once the crowds go away. It is recieving incredible "word of mouth" among the fans. The only reason Thor stayed at #1 in it's second week was because it had no competition. $25 mil is just fine.

I think Cap can pulled more money internationally. Just open recently in Asian and other countries.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY- Really? Green Lantern's box office estimates were a joke. And calling Captain America "average"? Ahh why am I feeding this troll?....

Hey the stronger survives @WarRocketAjax, Marvel should take the cake this decade. DC waits on the bench for the next by doing more cartoons. If DC/WB won't be so envious of what Marvel is doing, there won't be a comic book movie bust.

Areajarm: When mention that"worldwide" figure for Cap you should also note that the only country included in the figure besides America is Italy. I have been searching all morning for a report on all the other nations it was released in this week. So far, I've found nothing but I will post something as soon as I can find it.

@WarRocketAjax- 5 CBMs this year, yet which ones were the surperior? Marvel's! If anything, Green Lantern and movies like that will kill this genre. It's a perfect example of a "chessy superhero movie" Big actor turned superhero with one-liners, pretty girls, and "action"

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY--- Cap will make more than GL. The Cap montage was a pretty smart way to set up possible sequels that take place (at least partially) in the past. GL, much to my chagrin, almost put me to sleep twice. Give up.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY Covert Ops mission is not Captain America's style. Steve Rogers is not a lone wolf pussy like Batman. He's a team guy who likes to lead upfront. That way the montage is perfectly okay.

@WarRocketAjax-- If you're not into a proliferation of Comic Book Movies, why are you here? If you think studios should only put out the occasional CBM, there are plenty of other (general)movie sites.

I can't wait to see Cowboys and Aliens today! Smurfs will probably claim #1. I thought Cap was by far the best Marvel movie to date. I don't see why anyone else would think so drastically different. Like it was a bad movie or something. It got me pretty pumped for the Avenger's and same goes for anyone I've talked to. The needless cynicism of this comment section is such a turn off. It reminds me why I barely comment here anymore. When people are looking for nothing but problems that's all they'll find I suppose.

@ Areajerm......Yeah Captain America beat Harry Potter ........that's like saying you beat Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods at their game when their elderly...........wow..........Smurfs has been around since 58 and is known worldwide.........Cap has to have a title change ......are you kidding me? Their sipping on martinis to dull the pain.

The drop should have been expected though with two big movies coming out Cowboys and Aliens as well as family friendly Smurfs. Tough choice for people with kids in tough financial times.
