Jon Favreau and Bob Orci sat down with CBR in their Tiki room at WonderCon to discuss Cowboys and Aliens. During the discussion Favreau and Orci talked about the future of CBM's and shooting Cowboys and Aliens. What stood out to me about the interview is what was said when the topic turned to the similarities between shooting Cowboys and the first Iron Man film. I have transcribed that portion below.

Well, the first Iron Man, there wasn't a lot of pressure. Well, I mean there was because if we screwed up and The Hulk screwed up, there would be no studio that year, 2008. But, creatively there was zero pressure because Marvel movies already existed other places, they existed in Spider-Man and The X-Men. We almost felt like an afterthought at the time. Now you look at it and all those things we did arbitrarily in that first film, like put Captain America's shield in the background in the workshop or have Sam Jackson show up for a cameo after the credits, Those were all things we came up with as things that would be fun for the fans. By the time Iron Man II came around, now all the other franchises were starting, the other Marvel characters were trying to unify the Universe and set up The Avengers. So the pressure definitely increased as it became part of Disney. There was a big sale and then the pressure was on.

This is more like the first Iron Man where pretty much the studio is happy to have all of us involved. Whatever idea makes the other people in the room excited, we get to make in the movie with the cast. If the cast is excited by something we can try it. So it was a very freeing process.

Iron Man 2 wasn't bad, I loved it. It was as good as the first. He had alot on his plate with Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers being involved in this movie as well as building this character. Jon raised the bar a bit higher and for that, we thank you haha hope he comes back for Happy :)

I don't really know much about Cowboys and Aliens, but it sounds like it's gonna be a fun film.

@ dmm5 - Yeah, I'm hoping he stays on in an acting capacity. I thought Happy was funny in both Iron Man films (particularly the boxing scene in IM2).

Fav's hit a homerun with IM1 which was kind of a bad thing for him. He is very young in his career as a director and to have set such a high bar for himself it makes everything he does that much more comparitive.

@ Marvel72 - I agree Marvel haven't done a crap film yet. I don't think Iron Man 2 deserves the flak some people give it.

I thought Iron Man 2 was okay, definitely not as good as the first one. There's no need to reiterate all the criticisms of IM2 as I think almost everybody can agree that IM1 was better.

I'm gonna agree with darkmatter here, Favreau somehow got caught up with the pressure and it definitely affected his film negatively for IM2

It would have been nice to have Favreau finish up the Iron Man trilogy though.

I can't believe those guys are now just watching or just watched Breaking Bad. It's been the best show on TV for the last 4 years. Can't wait for season 4 to start soon.

I don't get the hate for IM2? *maybe* the final battle with Whiplash wasn't what it could have been, but the whole final battle was great!

Agreed that it wasn't as good as IM1, but IM1 = 10, IM2 = 9.5. Not too shabby.

Glad to see though Shane Black coming in, I think he's going to do great!

Oh, and Cap will be the best CBM this year and the best until The Avengers!

i really enjoyed Iron Man 2!

iron man and war machine working in tandem against the drones made the movie completely worth it.

i saw the midnight showing and everybody in the building screamed and applauded when iron man finished off the remaining drones with his "one-off" laser. that was an awesome moment!

Well as Herosave said, it would have been nice for Favreau to finish off the Iron Man trilogy but I guess theres no point in being sad about it, lets hope Shane Black does a good job (with Mandarin & the Ten Rings as villains)

And one question I want to ask everybody, why does everyone accuse of Iron Man 2 being reduced to an Avengers prequel? Apart from maybe too much Nick Fury, I didnt see any more Avengers influences. Black Widow needed to be in it so she could secretly keep an eye on Tony & the dangerous technology he wielded plus she was a great help in the final battle to Iron Man & War Machine. I do say though most of the SHIELD stuff should have been covered by Black Widow (as the undercover agent) & Coulson (the existing SHIELD liasion with Tony). Nick Fury was not needed. But apart from that, how the hell else did the Avengers influence the plot of Iron Man 2?

@ dancingmonkey08 - The Ten Rings were in Iron Man 1. The terrorist organisation who kidnaps Stark at the beginning were called The Ten Rings - watch it again, you'll see. Considering Obadiah Stane had them all executed I can't see them returning ;)

@RyKnow
No, that must have been only one section of the Ten Rings that were excuted by Stane, because on the Iron Man 2 commentary Favreau says that the guy who gives the fake ID/passport to Whiplash is part of the Ten Rings & even says it connected to Mandarin. So the Ten Rings arent all dead
