James Gunn Continues To Defend DCU Approach Amid Fan Confusion — Teases Big Man Of Tomorrow Plans

James Gunn has once again insisted that the DCU is following the plan he laid out in 2023, but with fans questioning how the franchise fits together, has his original vision been misunderstood?

When DC Studios' plans for the DCU were first announced at the start of 2023, fans—rightly or wrongly—were left with the impression that, outside of Elseworlds projects like The Penguin, James Gunn and Peter Safran would deliver an MCU-style franchise where each movie and TV show ties into whatever came next.

After nearly four years, the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate has given us Superman and Supergirl in theaters and Creature Commandos and Lanterns on streaming. There have also been new additions like Peacemaker Season 2, Clayface, and the upcoming Man of Tomorrow, but no sign of The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, Waller, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold.

Recent comments from Gunn have led to confusion among some fans about whether the DCU is comprised of standalone stories, an interconnected throughline, or a combination of both. The sticking point seems to be that what the filmmaker is saying now doesn't line up with promises made at the start of 2023.

Now, Gunn has attempted to clarify his remarks (again), reminding these fans that he is doing what he originally promised. "You can look at my quotes from January '23 when we started, and I said we were going to do exactly what we're doing," the DC Studios co-CEO wrote in response to a fan, before adding:

"I said some stories would be standalone like the Guardians movies were (which is what Clayface is) and some stories would have part of a larger narrative structure, which is what the Superman Saga is. All that said, each piece of the larger story should work on its own with or without having to see everything else."

"Also, some things get conflated here. The often-cited '8 to 10 year roadmap' originally pitched wasn't only story points (although that was a part of it), but also the plan for DC as a whole, including focusing on diamond characters (Superman, Batman, WW) as well as smaller characters we could turn into diamonds (Krypto, John Stewart, Peacemaker), how we would foster filmmaker freedom [and] allow for multiple tones [and] ratings, the influences of Star Wars [and] George R.R. Martin, and so much more."

However, perhaps aware of the frustration of those who feel the DCU isn't coming together in quite the same way as the MCU—by now in that franchise's timeline, The Avengers was fast approaching—Gunn pointed people to next summer's Man of Tomorrow.

"It's exciting seeing things start to come together, and all that makes me even more excited for what we have in store for everyone in Man of Tomorrow," the filmmaker shared as rumours continue to swirl that Wonder Woman and Batman could appear in his Superman sequel.

His comments today are largely consistent with that original vision for the DCU: some projects, like Clayface, can tell self-contained stories, while others, like the Superman Saga, contribute to a larger storyline.

Still, the fact that Gunn regularly has to clarify his approach suggests there is some confusion about how DC Studios intends to build its shared universe. Whether that's down to his original vision not being communicated clearly enough, the way the DCU has developed since 2023, or expectations shaped by the MCU, it's clear that not everyone is on the same page about what this franchise is supposed to be.

So, if people aren't confused by Gunn's approach to the DCU (for whatever reason), why is this 60-year-old head of a film studio bickering with fans on social media and having to clarify/explain his plans AGAIN? I don't remember Kevin Feige doing this between 2008 and 2012. Something has clearly been lost in translation for whatever reason.

Also, when did Krypto and Peacemaker become diamond characters on the same level as Batman and Wonder Woman?! At least it sounds like he's course correcting in Man of Tomorrow...

@JoshWilding - First off, are you commenting on your own article? OK, whatever. But you could at least READ your own article? The quote in YOUR article clearly says about Krypto, John Stewart and Peacemaker, that they are "smaller characters we could turn into diamonds".

You know, kind of like Starlord, Rocket etc. Gunn has a history of taking these characters that almost no one knows and making them into "diamond characters". Now you don't have to like how we did it, but you can't argue that he is almost solely responsible for bringing all of the Guardians into the forefront.

@JoshWilding - Exactly. Gunn has no knowledge of the characters or their universes. I believe he spot reads comics & has a total misconception about them. Im glad we got his BRIGHT, Goofy, Wacky, DCU...now that its failing Zacks 5 DCEU films looks amazing!! The costumes, the cinematography, Hans Zimmer music score, the script(without studio interference) is great work. The smear campaign that those ppl from Dc Studios launched against Zack worked back then but now it's evident that it was just HATE. Zack/Nolan/Goyer/Terrio did phenomenal work. I can rewatch those films over & over NOT GUNNS DC though.

@JoshWilding - kevin feige has never been active on social media regardless of the year, they are 2 different people with 2 different approaches. On top of that, people are dumb. You can explain something and some will get it, some won't. Take your articles for example, you're trying to tell us that gunn is unclear in his explanations and yet many people don't get what you're trying to say (or simply disagree since most of us can read). As for krypto and peacemaker (and john stewart), he's saying that he's trying to turn those into diamond characters, not that they are at that level right now. You should read what you write

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills lol. His whole plan seems fairly straight forward to me. The universe has some linear story telling, and some standalone films. There are also elseworld stories, that give them the freedom to make something that doesn't follow the regular continuity, all of which are clearly stated as such.

Standalone doesn't mean they aren't connected to the DCU, standalone means they are self contained stories that start and end with that film. They are still connected to the DCU, but aren't through lines on overarching plot points like Lanterns, Superman, Supergirl, or MoT are. Clayface of course happened in the DCU, it's just an origin story focused around Matt Hagen. Just because Batman isn't mentioned, or seen, does not mean it's not in the same universe. It's not like Batman is literally hanging out in every single alley way, dealing with every single bad guy or villian in Gotham. He's one man lol. I don't really want Batman to be a part of every villains origin story, seems like a very small world to me if that's the case.

Gunn seemingly doesn't want to run into the MCU problem of having every film connected to the point new potential fans don't want to start from the very beginning of things, and need to watch a gazillion films to catch up. It's a different approach from Marvel, but it makes it easier for people to hop on board without needing to see what's come before.

I really don't see what's so hard to understand about that? And when it comes to weaving in stories from the DCEU like Peacemaker, or The suicide squad, he's specifically stated what carries over. Maybe that's not the smoothest, but again it's been explained and I think people just need to move past that.

@RedFury - How long will this last though? Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America were nice, but MCU didn't skyrocket until EVERYONE was talking about the AVENGERS (2012). It's like the fire on the rocket is lit and about to launch into space and Gunn pours watery clay to put out the fire and goes "nah".

I'm seriously betting he's a double agent at Marvel Studios and is sabotaging the brand on purpose while watching his wife get railed by dudes in costumes.

RedFury - 10/27/2026, 5:18 PM
@Loohnutick - lol Gunn being a secret agent would be hilarious, now that's a long con!

I would agree that they need to get their most popular characters on screen sooner than later, because even as someone that isn't having an issue with it I would eventually be tired of getting B and C tier characters over my favs. I guess I just have more patience then some as this is purely entertainment to me. As long as we get the big hitters at some point over the next few years I think I'll be happy with whatever comes my way in the meantime.

TheVisionary25 - 10/27/2026, 4:28 PM
I feel Gunn is clear what he wants the franchise should be since his comments have been fairly consistent…

We know we have Kara & John amongst others in Man of Tomorrow so certain threads are coming together so let’s relax.

However it’s the fans lack of patience , conditioning from the MCU initially of building towards something aswell as their own views of how a live action shared universe should be that’s lended to the hubbub around this iteration of the DCU.

Plus I think people need to go back to this video and see that Gunn also says that the slate he reveals isn’t the complete one so projects like Clayface or Peacemaker S2 could have even existed then , maybe even a vague idea for Man Tomorrow but he would need Superman to succeed first before doing that.

?is=tfrvp9AG35b_eT3M

Anyway , People also need to release that the DCU itself didn’t actually start until December 2024 with Creature Commandos so it’s also not even 2 years old yet!!.

Also i think the confusion comes not from Gunn but from people who dont understand the mechanics of superhero comics because univeral story telling is not what they are use to. Because the MCU came first and laid a foundation of "one project leading to the next" now that DCU is on board with their heroes the confusion is "shouldnt one project lead to the next" as well. Comic book fans are use to this. Superhero movie fans may not be use to this especially if they dont read comics and just watch the movies. Gunn's method is throwing a curveball which really shouldnt rely on explanation. Judge the movie in front of you and stop looking for the next thing.

@krayzeman - The MCU model came directly from Marvel comics. Their model came from DC comics. If Gunn would use that model his universe would have a much better chance at success. What he's basing his model on is where DC comics are decades after they established themselves. Which is not dissimilar to the DCEU model basing itself on MCU Phase 3 trying to do Justice League: Endgame without any buildup.

Loohnutick - 10/27/2026, 4:49 PM
@krayzeman - This just isn't how you build a universe, and what is eventually going to turn into the MCU anyways. Try these weird ass projects all you want and keep saying you'renot copying Marvel, but if the end goal isn't super man, Batman, Flash, and Lantern standing side by side with heroic music playing while billions of dollars are getting thrown at them, wtf are we doing? Gorilla Grodd and Clayface is killing the steam and people will lose interest in the franchise/universe fast. Just road map the justice league at that point. I promise you DC fans won't be mad if you copy Marvel lol.

I bet when Gunn has sex, it's all foreplay, he doesn't even stick it inside and he runs out the room when his wife is about to cum.

It has really nothing to do with that honestly. It's just for a lineup for TV and live-action, it's not really that interesting. If out of the five, TWO have really made an impact on film and TV. Where as where the MCU was at, all five movies leading up to Avengers made a big impact enough to score a $200 million OW.

But if the metrics are focused on genre specifics....thennnnn it's wayyyy to early for that when no one truly knows what this DCU is supposed to be. I get the notion for letting the movie just be a movie. I get that...but within this context at world building...wtf are we doing here?

"Oh this is connected, that, MIGHT NOT BE, but hey you'll see that character down the line somewhere, oh that isn't important, but GORILLA GRODD IN COLLEGE!"

WHAT!? LMAO!? It's just so bizarre!

Loohnutick - 10/27/2026, 4:39 PM
I really wonder how Warner Bros feels with Gunn doing everything in his power ignoring the most successful film franchise, one that just made an easy $2B last summer, and him saying "no, we're not gonna do anything like that at all". It's like as soon as he thinks of plans of getting Batman and Wonder Woman off the ground to make a team up Justice League film he goes "No, that'd copy Marvel, and we can't do that because I have a huge ego, we need to do something else entirely" and that's how we get a Clayface and Gorilla Grodd project for whatever plan he has (I still don't see an actual plan)

It's so frustrating lol. I'm not a huge DC guy but what is Jimmy doing to this IP. Superman -> Bat Man -> Wonder Woman -> Justice League, in your OWN vision wouldn't be copying anything. It's not [frick]ing rocket science.

It's like watching your driver take the longest [frick]ing road possible to a destination while going "no, no watch, it's a shortcut trust me, I've thought about taking this route, I know better." Now it's been [frick]ing 40 minutes, you're looking at your Google Maps app telling you to turn the [frick] around every intersection to get back to the fastest route, car's out of gas, while you could've arrived in 10 minutes taking the highway AND there's road work ahead. You just stare at him while sitting in the passenger seat going "...what the [frick] are you doing".

I'm genuinely concerned for DC fans. How could Victor Von Doom possibly face off against Captain Milk Gallon (Gunn only character coming to HBO 2028, supposed to introduce that Bat dude or something)

🤔 💭... MARVEL didn't start this. I'm thinking of The Matrix, Terminator, Freddy, Jason, Hell- even Batman and Superman all had one project leading into another.

MARVEL did exactly what comics have done for decades- which is put the heroes together, but projects need only a financially successful story to green light another.

I think there’s a difference between Gunn’s approach actually confusing some people and him actually contradicting himself. His explanation is pretty straightforward: some projects will be standalone, while others contribute to a larger narrative, with each still working on its own. You can question the DCU’s execution but that’s not the same as Gunn abandoning or contradicting his original plan.

Honestly, this is why I REALLY wish Gunn would get off social media outside promotion, DCU updates/announcements, and harmless things like birthday posts for characters. Be a boring lame corporate CEO like Feige. His responses to fans and rumors constantly become fodder for controversy, with narratives getting spun into articles that overshadow the actual projects. And you know it’s a slow ass news day when clarifying an approach he’s explained since 2023 becomes a whole controversy that requires TWO separate articles. 😭

The irony is that the DCU is essentially doing what DC Comics, the DCAU, and even the ’90s Marvel Animated Universe did: balancing standalone stories with interconnected narratives and crossover events. Not every project needs to advance the overarching plot. And this wasn’t rocket science to kids in the 90’s/00’s so clearly MCU expectations is doing most of the heavy lifting regarding the ‘confusion’

For years, people criticized the MCU for making everything feel like homework and samey. Now DC is trying a different balance, and suddenly it’s not interconnected enough. If you insist the DCU must follow the exact blueprint of MCU Phases 1–3, despite Gunn explicitly saying he won’t copy Marvel verbatim, I can see why you’d be frustrated since nuance and reading comprehension clearly aren’t everyone’s superpower.. but the approach itself really isn’t that difficult to understand. Whether Gunn and Safran execute it successfully is a separate conversation.

This “confusion” in a nutshell:

Fans: “The MCU is too interconnected. Everything feels like homework, nothing stands on its own, and every movie feels the same.”

Gunn: “We’re not copying the MCU. The DCU will have standalone stories alongside interconnected narratives, with projects that can be enjoyed on their own without needing to follow everything else.”

Fans: “Why isn’t the DCU following the MCU?! Everything should be connected! 😡”

Gunn: “ Again, We’re not copying the MCU. The DCU will have standalone stories alongside interconnected narratives, with projects that can be enjoyed on their own without needing to follow everything else.”

Fans: “WHY ISNT IT FOLLOWING THE MCU? MAKE IT LIKE THE MCU!”

Rinse and repeat ad nauseam. 💀😭

@Kahron0 - I think this is one of the biggest problem with the internet these days. It seems like everyone is always hating on things because there's always haters on every side. So no matter what news is reported, the negativity is always full steam ahead. The people that weren't complaining last time, are complaining this time, so on and so forth. It's a vacuum of hate, and it just echoes forever because there's always someone out there unhappy about something.

I miss simpler times.
