Skydance Finds New Paramount/Warner Bros. Film Chiefs — But Where Does That Leave DC's James Gunn?

Skydance has decided to move on from Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy for the new Paramount/Warner Bros. mega-studio, but what of James Gunn and why is he coming under fire from DC fans today?

Late last night, the news broke that Paramount Pictures is expected to remove Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy as co-chairs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

They've had mixed fortunes while leading the studio. After a challenging 2024, they delivered multiple box office successes for Warner Bros. last year. However, 2026 hasn't been quite as kind. Movies like The Bride and Supergirl have bombed, and now Tom Cruise's Digger—which reportedly went way over budget—is set to be one of the year's biggest box office flops.

De Luca and Abdy have brought Warner Bros. plenty of awards success, including Ryan Coogler's Sinners. However, it seems David Ellison is looking for some fresh blood to revitalise what he's previously said will be a slate of at least 30 movies a year from the combined studios.

According to Deadline, Skydance will likely be run by current Paramount Motion Picture co-chairs, Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg. De Luca and Abdy learned of their ousting online last night, but it sounds like they may be asked to stick around in different roles. However, "Ellison never made a phone call to them about their future and whether or not there’s a job offer in hand."

While the duo recently renewed their contracts through 2030 under current Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, Ellison clearly feels that Greenstein and Goldberg are the right choice to spearhead Skydance.

DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran are not mentioned in this report, though Puck said last night that Ellison will likely ask them to remain in charge of the offshoot studio. Well, "at least initially."

So far, Gunn and Safran have delivered two apparent hits in Superman and Lanterns, and a box office bomb with Supergirl. Ellison may want to give them a chance to continue with their shared vision for the DCU, but their future will surely hinge on how well Clayface and Man of Tomorrow perform.

For what it's worth, Gunn has shared Ellison's Skydance hype video on Threads, captioning it, "What once was the peak, is now just the beginning."

The response to his post has been understandably mixed, with fans responding, "Did Ellison hold you hostage just for you to post this," "I feel icky watching this," "Oh, this is such a bummer to see you post. This feels like the time you told people that The Flash was amazing," and "Paramount is going to make you turn Superman into Homelander."

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

It means Gunn is out the door once his contract expires.

@FireGunn - Weren't you saying he's out the door once this merger settles, just a few weeks ago?

@foreverintheway - and he'll be saying it all the way to 2036.

I expect Ellison to just let Gunn's contract expire and move on that way instead of firing him, as he has less than a year left on it. If Man of Tomorrow is a major hit, which I doubt thanks to Supergirl, I can see Gunn being offered the opportunity to make a third Superman movie, but not run the actual studio.

Abdy and DeLuca had a lot of failures this year but Supergirl wasn't one of them. That was all on Gunn and Safran.

So people saying James Gunn was safe by pointing out how they were definitely keeping DeLuca and Abdy and so would probably keep Gunn too... well that logic's not looking so sound anymore. Gunn be cooked. Which just makes his brown-nosing on twiiter look all the more pathetic.

@ObserverIO - There's no reason to fire Gunn and pay him the rest of his contract when he has less than a year left at the studio. The reason the other two you mentioned are being let go is because their contracts extends to 2030; that's too long to wait out.

The outrage is just noise. If they can deliver on quality then this will just be a blip on the screen at the end of the day.

If MoT is epic, it will give pervy nutjob Gunn a stay of execution.

But he is clearly incapable of running The Who DCFU he created. Maybe he makes a 3rd Superman movie, but someone else must take over the overlord job.

@Bucky74 - This was the one comment that pissed me off. And speaking of Star Trek I had some dude jump on me earlier about people pushing too much DEI on Star Trek and saying thats what the show is about. TF is wrong with people. Oh yeah, absolutely nothing about space exploration and different species.. nope all DEI.

Turn Superman into Homelander. GTFO

I think a lot of this will hinge on Man of Tomorrow’s performance. I could see it going both ways on if Gunn sticks around after that film.

James Gunn tem que ir embora, Lanterna não fez sucesso algum, a mídia que viralizou essa série trágica. E supergirls foi um fracasso retumbante.

I have a legitimate question for the people who don’t like Gunn’s DCU and want him gone…

Who would you put in that role?.

I know some will say Snyder which won’t happen so let’s shuffle that off the board and come up with a realistic option please.

Honestly I think this is kind of DC’s last chance for a shared universe after the failure of the DCEU and 2011’s GL of this doesn’t work or is cut short for any reason then I think you’ll be back to more standalone films which may not inherently be a bad thing and perhaps where they shine more but I do think it would be less exciting and a step backward.

Anyway personally I have enjoyed Gunn’s DCU overall , I certainly have my issues but there’s been more stuff I like about it then not so I do hope Clayface and especially MOT (which will be the first real test imo) do very well commercially & critically so we can get more!!.

@TheVisionary25 - I don't hate but I will answer "Who would you put in that role?"

Bruce Timm, a pioneer of the comic boom property shared universe. He's more than earned it IMO

TheVisionary25 - 10/2/2026, 11:46 AM
@ArthurFuchsache - ok but I feel like you still need someone who has worked in live action atleast for this position…

Even Filoni trained under the likes of Favreau to study live action given he just came from an animation background hence him directing episodes of certain SW shows and even working second unit on Mando & Grogu.

Bruce Timm has no such experience hence I feel you could have him as a consultant perhaps but not the head of a studio.

@TheVisionary25 - there is no answer cause they just want him gone

Dc movies go back in the vault for 5-10 years again if Gunn is let go and they’re gonna cry about that

Man of Tomorrow's numbers will determine if they move forward with this universe. Also what the next Batman movie does will play a role in what direction they go.
Some of you here have no idea how companies run. They set goals and objectives. Some might be 5 year plans. Some 10.

I still think Digger was made because a bunch of people wrongfully thought a Les Grossman movie was something everyone wanted.

Starting to think maybe losing Gunn could be a good thing. Waiting for Clayface but that's probably going to bomb, then MOT which could go either way. Superman was just OK, Supergirl was almost just OK but not quite. I have enjoyed Lanterns but mainly for Hal who looks to be toast.

TheJok3r - 10/2/2026, 11:55 AM
@MarvelousMarty - We need to go back to standalone character franchises headed by the best creatives in the industry like what Batman got with Nolan. These shared universes are just not working out for DC.

1stDalek - 10/2/2026, 12:12 PM
@MarvelousMarty - What makes you think Clayface will bomb? We're in a horror friendly era, the budget is small for a comic book film, the trailers have been solid so far and it's a big horror release in late October. It seems to me that it has everything in hand to succeed, short of the film getting bad reviews and word of mouth.

Say what you will about WB's off year but De Luca and Abdy have been taking big swings and that's admirable in its way. The Bride, Wuthering Heights, The Mummy, Evil Dead Burn have all been major "let them cook" endeavors, and the last 3 made decent money for their budgets. Digger and Dune 3 will also join that line-up before the year ends, most likely in a didn't make money-made money, 1-1 split.
I think their era in charge will be seen with positivity in the end, a big course correction for the studio's output and some major successes, even with a bunch of notable stumbles in '24 and '26. Specially once the output till early 2028 is tallied up, as that's already built out by them.

@1stDalek - yeah

I atleast admire them trying to take risks and genuinely being creative forward execs which I don’t see happening now , atleast for awhile.

Day One I said James Gunn was Terrible Choice in Over his head. Gunn has more failures than Successes. Even Superman was Underwhelming Results.

Being reported day of the Merger Happens.
