Zazie Beetz did a fantastic job as Domino in Deadpool 2 and, while it would be an exaggeration to say it's now hard to imagine anyone else playing the character, the Joker star certainly made the mutant her own.
Rumour has it she'll return in Deadpool 3, but it sounds like the role very nearly went to Legion and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries star Aubrey Plaza.
"There are a lot of roles that I really wanted that I didn’t get, but everything happens for a reason," she says in the video below. "I don’t know, the one that sticks out to me for some reason I think it was 'Deadpool 2.' I had just come off a plane and I think I was shooting 'Legion' at the time."
"And I really wasn't in a good zone cause...auditioning. You have to be in an auditioning zone and I was in a 'work zone.' That one hurt," Plaza continues. "Me and Ryan Reynolds, what could go wrong? We Would be great together..."
Plaza would have been a terrific Domino and, while she doesn't specifically name that character, the lucky mutant was the sequel's female lead so it makes the most sense. Still, she's landed on her feet after nabbing what sounds like a crucial role in the Agatha series.
She's also not the only MCU star to miss out on the Deadpool franchise as Eternals' Kumail Nanjiani previously revealed that he nearly played Dopinder before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's Karan Soni nabbed the part.
Asked about potentially being part of Deadpool 3, Beetz recently said, "Well, I can’t, obviously, really say anything, but I feel lucky. I just can’t really divulge or say anything, so we’ll see, I suppose."
We'd say she's all but confirmed for a cameo and, if so, she'll join Deadpool franchise vets Karan Soni (Dopinder), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), and Rob Delaney (Peter). Josh Brolin's Cable is not expected to appear, though we've heard there may be plans for him to join the MCU down the line.
Deadpool 3 is currently set to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.
