Variety has learned that the 2016 blockbuster, Deadpool, will finally premiere in China next month during the Beijing International Film Festival, which, this year, will run from April 15th to April 22nd.
According to their report, the film will screen unedited, with their source definitively stating that "All festival films should play in the original version,” which, considering how strict Chinese regulators tend to be, is a pretty major win for a film that is filled to the brim with R-rated material typically unsuited for the mainstream audience.
While it's unlikely that this premiere will contribute much, if anything, to the film's $783.1 million global box office haul, it may have some positive consequences for Deadpool 2, which has yet-to-be-confirmed for a China release date. If the first film was approved and is received well, maybe the upcoming sequel will also get approved by regulators, possibly even early enough to get a day-and-date release on May 18th.
