DEADPOOL Movie Helps To Set Up 'Massive' X-MEN Franchise Plans, Insists Simon Kinberg

Beyond taking place within the X-Men cinematic universe, the highly-anticipated Deadpool movie will apparently help tell a larger story that could play out in X-Men: Apocalypse and beyond. Check it out!

X-Men: Days of Future Past screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg reconfirmed to Cinema Blend that the forthcoming Deadpool movie will take place within the same continuity as the X-Men franchise, but that's not all. Apparently, the mutant 4th-wall-breaker's long-awaited solo outing is "setting up for something bigger," per the site. "They do all feed into one another in the sense of wanting to tell this sort of massive story that can take place over multiple movies," said Kinberg, when asked if there is some big idea behind placing Deadpool and other potential standalone movies within the X-Men timeline. The producer then reiterated that Fox's approach to the the shared cinematic universe is much like Marvel Studios' in the sense that you can watch each movie with a full experience, yet there is an "even fuller experience" to see the characters and stories come together and overlap. "We are aware [of that] as we are plotting out X-Men: Apocalypse and the other X-Men movies – both potential sequels in the future and standalone movies – and trying to build them all together so that there is a singularity of vision. And obviously a timeline that makes sense as well, because these movies all, well not all, but many of them take place in different time periods, so that all those things will link up and make sense for an audience."

For the record, there seemed to be a little bit of embellishment on Cinema Bland's part, regarding how Deadpool will help to set up a larger X-Men story in the future, but what do you think? Anyhow, Ryan Reynolds is said to return as Wade Wilson in Deadpool and the movie, directed by Tim Miller, is set for release on February 2, 2016. And later that year, Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse will hit on May 27, starring Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult.

How do they do this?

Unfortunately it looks like a lot of things will have to take place in the past. Not that I give a sh*t about it set in the year of the new iPhone, but leading up to 2023 when Logan wakes up is going to be difficult. If they even plan to make it there. Hell I wouldn't mind if they stayed in the 80's-90's for the next 5 movies.

I'd prefer Deadpool to take place in the present... A lot more jokes there. But meanwhile the X-Men are stuck in the 80's :/

@TheManFromMars Me and Tucks actually had a conversation about that. There's only a selected few at fox who knows hot to hype a movie correctly. Kinberg is, (most of the time), one of them.

There are clearly sort of two 'timelines' in this franchise.

The 'original'
Origins: Wolverine
X-Men
X2
The Last Stand
The Wolverine

Then there is the 'reboot/prequel/time travel' timeline
First Class
Days of Future Past
Apocalypse

But when it comes to Deadpool in Feb 2016 and the next Wolverine movie in March 2017....it seems unclear where they will take place. In the 'original' timeline or in this new timeline that has used time travel to 'reset' things.

First off, I have a question for anyone that will answer: Who do you think the villain(s) will be in the Deadpool movie?

What I got from Kinberg's statement is that Deadpool is a part of some overarching story in the X-Men Universe; maybe it's tied into Apocalypse somehow. No matter what, I'm just excited that the film is finally made, the test footage was awesome and I hope the entire film is violent, hilarious, but with some drama to balance all of it out (A great example of this is the recent "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" story arc in the comics). It's great that Fox is finally expanding their Marvel universe. I'm hoping that after Apocalypse, we get to see an X-Men trilogy more reminiscent of the '90s cartoon's line-up. I don't know how possible seeing as the timeline has so many members of the core team scattered throughout almost 6 decades, but a guy can still dream. Hopefully we'll get that X-Force film soon as well as an X-Factor possibly. The Fantastic Four are going to bring a cosmic side that hasn't even been explored before, so Fox could maybe release Silver Surfer & Starjammer films; Galactus, The Brood, Skrulls, etc.

As long as the movie is along the lines of the test footage it'll be GREAT!I just hope that they respect what makes Deadpool an interesting character, violence, psychosis, humor, did I already say violence?
