Disney Junior has unveiled some first-look promo images (via Toonado.com) for its upcoming animated The Little Mermaid spin-off, Ariel, giving us a glimpse of the character designs for King Triton, Ursula the Sea Witch, and the aquatic heroine of the title.

The network has also announced the voice-cast, with Mykal-Michelle Harris (Raven’s Home) as Ariel, Taye Diggs (Rent) as King Triton, Amber Riley (Glee) as Ursula, and Gracen Newton (Puppy Dog Pals) as Ariel's pal Flounder.

Though this show is billed as a spin-off, these are actually new takes on the characters, suggesting that Ariel takes place in a separate continuity to the recent live-action remake.

This is obviously geared towards much younger kids, but it should be a fun watch for any fan of The Little Mermaid.

Check out the promo images below.

"Set in the fantastical Caribbean-inspired underwater kingdom of Atlantica, the series follows Ariel as she embarks on fun-filled, action-packed mermaid adventures with her friends. Driven by a deep and unending curiosity about the world around her, Ariel discovers land treasures, like a big floppy hat, squeaky rubber ducky, and whisk, that she collects and keeps safe in her crystal cavern. Sometimes, Ariel uses the treasures to help solve problems.

With each discovery, Ariel is filled with joy, and her mermaid tail, which changes colors depending on her emotions, lights up and shimmers. Full of charm, big ideas and a powerful voice, “Disney Junior’s Ariel” is coming into her own, learning how to discover and appreciate the world around her and use her voice to inspire others."

Disney Junior’s Ariel is executive produced by Lynne Southerland. Norma P. Sepulveda and Keith Wagner are the story editors. Ezra Edmond is producer. Kuni Tomita Bowen is supervising director, and Chrystin Garland is art director. The series is produced by Wild Canary in association with Disney Junior.

No premiere date has been announced, but Ariel is expected to debut at some point next year.

Safe to say the live action movie did make back its money based on merchandising alone, so it's not a true flop despite underperforming ticket sales.

@CoHost @Drace24 - Actually, it's been a big summer for toy franchises (Barbie, Transformers, TMNT, The Little Mermaid). I don't know about Mattel (who also currently has the license for Disney Princesss which Hasbro has it for everything else) or Playmates (TMNT), but I read recently that Transformer sales have increased 85% since "TF:RotB" came out. And as someone who regularly spends a good amount of time in the toy aisles of my local Walmart and Target, it's not like any of these movie toys are piling up on the shelves (I have 2 little girls so spend just as much time in the Disney and Barbie aisles as I do in the Transformers/Star Wars/Marvel aisles).

So I'm sure the toy sales are helping to take some of the sting out of the movies that didn't do as well as had been hoped (although for Barbie I'm sure it's just icing on the cake). And in Mattel's case they are seriously rushing to make movies out of practically all their brands, starting with Polly Pocket. But do we really need a Hot Wheels movie? We'll see...

@StSteven - So we went from "This movie is gonna make a billion dollars and it will change the world!" all the way down to "It didn't totally flop thanks to the merch!"

@Drace24 - Yepper. And that pretty much applies to all of the above except for "Barbie". Sadly (or not) I'm afraid all the merchandise in the world ain't gonna help poor old "Flash". I'm pretty sure I saw his merch on clearance already last weekend and I couldn't help but laugh out loud (trust me you get some weird looks from the other shoppers when you're laughing at toys).

Is this an original show with new characters? I don’t see any resemblance to anything else they’ve ever done.
