Explaining Live-Action Moana Box Office Flop: Disney’s Dana Walden Blames Proximity To Animated Sequel

Why did live-action Moana bomb after Moana 2 made $1B? Disney’s Dana Walden breaks down why the live-action Moana failed to capture audiences at the box office.

Few franchises hit as hard for Disney as Moana.

The 2016 animated hit crushed it at the box office and remains a constant fixture on Disney+ streaming charts.

Its 2024 sequel went even bigger, crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide. So how did the live-action remake stumble so badly earlier this year?

Directed by Thomas Kail from a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, the trouble started the exact second the studio dropped its very first teaser image for the film's most popular character.

As soon as fans saw Dwayne Johnson in that questionable wig playing the shapeshifting demigod, the project felt dead on arrival.

However, President Dana Walden has another reason for the film's failure.

Appearing at Bloomberg’s Screentime event in Los Angeles, Walden told the crowd, "It’s so competitive right now that you have to have … the right film at the right time, with audiences feeling a certain degree of demand."

She continued, "I would say our live-action ‘Moana,’ which is excellent, I think it was hurt by the proximity to our second animated version of ‘Moana,’ which came together under unusual circumstances, but premiered about 18 months before this one. So perhaps there was not enough time to create a lot of pent-up demand for another film."

But Walden indicated that there will be more Moana down the line despite the failure of the live-action adaptation.

She also touched on the fact that a large corporation such as Disney generates revenue with its IP through other means than just box office performance, so even if a film fails to turn a profit, the characters and franchise still have value.

"Our job is to deliver the highest quality. Try to create content which endures and is going to be of value years and years and years from now. That is what has built this unmatched canon of IP."

In Disney’s live-action adaptation of the beloved Oscar®-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people. The film is directed by Emmy® and Tony Award® winner Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”); produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and executive produced by Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth and Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated features “Moana” and “Moana 2.” Audiences can experience the brilliant cinematic sights, sounds and songs of “Moana” in U.S. theaters on July 10, 2026.

Lilo and stitch aside, these live adaptations are just really bad. I don’t know any actor who could have worked better than the Duane Johnson?

Yeah, that’s not the reason it bombed. None have been good and Disney can’t even be faithful to their own stories, see the ending to Live action Lilo and Stitch.

@Astroman - That Lilo and Stitch was pretty damn bad. There's really no excuse for that.

I do think her assessment is valid to an extent since we just had a Moana film then recently but i also think it was just too soon in general to do a live action remake since the original was almost only a decade old until that point and is still quite popular on streaming.

Plus the movie just looked aggressively fine imo so even if families & such wanted to see it , it was one of the films they could wait for on streaming while checking out other movies in theaters such as Toy Story 5 etc.

Rock fatigue. He had a really great run but unless you have the range of someone like Tom Cruise, who can not only act superbly in action/drama/comedy/sci-fi/thriller but also produce the movies, then it’s inevitable that there will be a decline - people get sick of the same schtick from actors with fairly limited range. Very few action movie stars can stay at the top of the their game indefinitely; it happened Arnie, Stallone, etc. I think a different actor in the role would have changed the film’s appeal immediately.

This is ONE of many problems. Biggest one, is actually having a team of industry leaders believe it was a good idea to greenlight a live-action film so soon with NO DEMAND what so ever.
