The first teaser trailer for Soul is now online, and this looks like it's going to be another heart-warming hit for Pixar.

The animated adventure tells the story of a jazz musician named Joe Gardner (Foxx), who lands the gig of a lifetime before suffering a freak accident which separates his soul from his body and sends it to the "You Seminar." There, he meets Tina Fey‘s 22, a soul who can’t stand humans but agrees to help Joe on his mission across the cosmos.

The film is directed by Pixar COO Pete Docter (Monsters Inc, Inside Out), and will also feature the voice talents of Blindspotting‘s Daveed Diggs, The Cosby Show‘s Phylicia Rashad, and The Roots drummer Questlove.

Check out the teaser below along with a poster and synopsis, and let us know what you think in the comments. Soul is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2020.

Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher, has long dreamed of performing jazz music onstage, and finally gets a chance after impressing other jazz musicians during an opening act at the Half Note Club. However, an accident causes Gardner’s soul to be separated from his body and transported to the “You Seminar”, a center in which souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child, and Gardner must work with souls in training, such as 22, a soul with a dim view on life after being trapped for years at the You Seminar, in order to return to Earth before it’s too late.

"a jazz musician whose soul is separated from his body after an accident"

Oh God, the tears, they're coming already.

This looks like a bonafide hit. The jazz and NYC sold me, but I'm not really into the whole "soul fictionalization" thing. Would've preferred if they just kept it with the human characters about him becoming a jazz artist, but I guess that's too boring for the little kids.

Ah well, still looks intriguing.

Sounds really interesting. Love the premise. So glad Pixar is finally getting away from mediocre sequels and getting back to originals that made them so great to begin with.

The last original Pixar movie was in 2017 with Coco (masterpiece imo). I just find Pixar way more exiting when they create new movies/worlds. I2 and TS4 where pretty good, but neither of them where better than the original (or in TS4 case, I think its the 'worst' out of the four, but still really good nonetheless). Next year with Onward and Soul where getting back to original movies, there strongest attribute. Pete Doctor is easily the best/most consistent of all the Pixar directors, so exited for this one!

@Tcb97 - Totally agree! I think all of their original films, except for maybe Brave and Good Dinosaur, are great! The sequels outside of the Toy Story movies are pretty meh. Even though I will defend Cars 3 til the day I die

@Bokis - I actually think Cars 3 is the best of the series.

@Tcb97 - Does anyone even remember what happened in Finding Dori? Because I forgot that film as soon as I left the theater.

@MrDandy - Leagues ahead of Cars 2, obviously, and it might actually be better than the first one, which is also kinda underrated in my opinion. Cars 3 deals with aging and legacy in a really good way.

Pete Docter knows how to pick em.

This one will be really good. Foxx has a great voice.

This looks great, I would love for Pixar to do Jack Kirby's KAMANDI THE LAST BOY ON EARTH! Get away from the comedy and do a real adventure story!

Looks good. I was getting concerned looking at the behind the scenes people, but there's at least one black writer, so that's something. Yay Progress!

Seeing that much level of realistic detail applied to such goofy looking character designs is starting to make them look borderline creepy.

Those NYC backgrounds look incredible. Pixar always seems to be pushing the boundaries of CG animation with each release. As for the movie, this is just a teaswer but it looks a lot like the spiritual follow-up to Inside Out which is one of my all-time favorites so I will be checking it out.
