THE ARISTOCATS Is The Latest Animated Disney Classic To Get The Live-Action Treatment

A live-action adaptation of the '70s animated classic, The Aristocats, is in early development at Walt Disney Studios, with Peter Rabbit director Will Gluck and Onward writer Keith Bunin on board.

As Disney continues to work its way through its back catalogue of animated classics, the latest beloved feature to get the live-action treatment is The Aristocats.

Variety reports that Peter Rabbit director Will Gluck is set to helm the project, while Onward writer Keith Bunin will pen the script. Gluck will also produce via his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner. Though the trade doesn't specify, the movie is expected to "have a similar look to the Lady in the Tramp," which suggests a live-action/CGI hybrid with real animals used wherever possible.

It's not clear if The Aristocats will get a theatrical release, or is being developed for a Disney+ streaming service debut.

The original movie followed "a family of aristocratic cats — mother Duchess and her three kittens Berlioz, Marie and Toulouse — living a luxurious life in Paris. But when their owner’s butler finds out that the cats are set to receive a massive fortune, he kidnaps them and abandons them in an unfamiliar land — the country. The aristocats then must befriend an alley cat, named Thomas O’Malley, to help them get home before the butler steals what is rightfully theirs."

Although it's not generally thought of as "top-tier" Disney, The Aristocats was a box office success when it was released, grossing a total of $191 million worldwide. Reviews were mixed, however (the movie sits at 65% on RT).

Disney is just so lazy with these things. Because the movies are already written. All Disney has to do is is hire celebrity actors, do a little CGI here and there, and rake in the money from nostalgia alone.

What ever happened with that live-action Lilo & Stitch anyway?

@KWilly - The story here is fluffy enough but so thinly written the scriptwriter will really have his work cut out.

@KWilly -

Don't reboot or remake: sequelize.

Have the new story focused on Marie's kittens or something, or do an O'Malley prequel.
Freaking hate remakes and reboots when this would be the perfect chance to build on the stories rather than doing them again

These have little interest from me until they do Black Cauldron. That would make a good live action remake.

@inkniron - I have never seen it, I heard it was pretty dark.

@inkniron - Yesssss. A pg-13 Horned King would be pretty rocking and give a whole new generation of kids nightmares. Lol

@marvel72 - It was but at that age, even though I was still a young lad, I was enamored by fantasy/sci fi things like Legend, Krull and The Neverending Story. While most Disney things in my eyes, were geared towards little girls, this one spoke to me.

@Feralwookiee - Especially with today's practical and special effects, it could be wild.

Honestly, I say do a D+ series based on The Chronicles of Prydain since they re-acquired the rights to them all. They can still call it Black Cauldron.

@marvel72 - I say go for it. It may just be rose colored nostalgia glasses but I may give it another whirl myself. It's been a while.

@inkniron - 100% yes. That is the one movie that should get a live action release. The original cut of the movie was never released because Disney thought it was too dark. I read somewhere that it was almost borderline rated R so things had to be edited. If you watch it you can actually see where they cut whole sections of the movie. Especially in the third act. Once the Cauldron is opened the original animation was pretty gruesome. As was the final act with the Horned King.

Definitely a D+ offering.

The original is probably one of their worst movies from the main animated canon, so in that regard I don't really care, but this remake fad of theirs still annoys me in principle.
