THE LION KING Prequel Will Tell Mufasa's Origin Story; Kelvin Harrison Jr. & Aaron Pierre Set For Lead Roles

Disney's upcoming prequel to the 2019 smash hit The Lion King, which will reveal Mufasa's origin, has found its headliners in Waves star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Old star Aaron Pierre.

Deadline is reporting that Walt Disney Studios has enlisted Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Waves; LuceThe Trial Of The Chicago 7) and Aaron Pierre (Old; The Underground Railroad; Krypton) to topline the voice cast of their upcoming The Lion King prequel, which will tell the origin story of Mufasa.

Pierre will voice a young Mufasa while Harrison will voice Taka, the lion more famously known as Scar. No word on the supporting cast just yet, but DHD claims several big names are in consideration.

Academy Award-winner Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk; Moonlight; The Underground Railroad) will direct with an original screenplay from Jeff Nathanson (The Lion King; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales; Tower Heist) and Academy Award-winner Hans Zimmer is set to compos the score.

Like the previous film and The Jungle Book, the yet-to-be-titled prequel will also utilize photorealistic animation technology for the main characters. Considering its use was met a lot more divisively in The Lion King (2019) than the other Jon Favreau-directed feature, it's fair to wonder whether they'll make any significant upgrades to how the lions and other animals emote.

No release date has been set, but production has been underway for quite some time, so we could be getting an official announcement of some sort before the end of this calendar year.

Absolutely psyched to see Mufasa during his clubbing phase before Sarabi domesticated his ass down

Is this the first prequel to a live-action remake? Because it doesn't feel that way. What this does feel like though, is Disney really running out of ideas.

@bkmeijer - Was the second Maleficent movie a prequel or a sequel? I guess a better question would be “who cares?”

@OldMan - honestly I don't remember. I know I don't care until they announce remakes of Atlantis and/or Treasure Planet

@bkmeijer - Dude, same. And maybe Lilo & Stitch, if that would translate to live action.

Also the second Maleficent was a sequel.

@tmp3 - The article says Harrison's playing Taka and Pierre's playing Mufasa.

The beauty of the Lion King and the character of Mufasa is the magic and mystery of his almighty wisdom. To show us anything before that, will just take away everything that made him great in the original.

What’s with Hollywood’s hard on for deconstructing bad ass characters and giving them a zero to hero origin story?

Not to forget the amazing voice of James Earl Jones that helped make that almighty magic and mystery.

Cant be worst than the remake. Nothing to be recreated shot for shot and padded out

I’ve always wondered what a Lion King prequel with young Mufasa and Scar would be like but only to the original not the new one.

@RevanOfKrypton - They’re making the film whether you like it or not. You can just not see it.

I’m actually interested in an idea of a prequel. I rather see that than a remake of Lion King 2.

The dude voicing Scar was really good in Trial of the Chicago 7.

Haven't seen the guy voicing Mufasa in anything except Old, and he gave probably the worst performance in that movie (I'm sure it's a directing thing though, 'cause Shyamalan has a habit of misdirecting really good actors).

Unlike many I actually loved remake, The Lion King being my favorite movie of all time it hit me right in the feels even if some of the emotion was lost due to their faces. That having been said… eh sure I guess.

This is something I’d watch on Disney Plus for free later on but not pay to go see. I’d rather of anything they made Simba’s Pride in live action which is a sequel that is way better than people give it credit for

@Ha1frican - I agree. The 1994 film is my favorite Disney film and I didn’t dislike the remake either. Barry Jenkins directing leaves me feeling very positive about the likelihood of this being a good movie.
