BOX OFFICE: DOCTOR STRANGE Set To Remain At #1 This Weekend; How Close To $1 Billion Will It Ultimately Get?
With Veterans Day falling on a Friday this year, we can expect it to be a busy weekend at the box office. That's good news for Doctor Strange as it looks set to remain at #1 for a second weekend.
Deadline reports that Doctor Strange looks set to earn between $40 million - $42 million at the North American box office this weekend. That's a drop of only 52% and will ensure that the critically acclaimed Marvel Studios movie remains at #1. That's despite stiff competition from Trolls and new release Arrival, a movie with some serious star power thanks to leads Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams.
Doctor Strange has now passed $100 million domestically in just six days, but don't expect the Scott Derrickson helmed release to end up reaching $1 billion worldwide. The trade adds that despite it performing better than expected overseas, that's a figure it's unlikely to reach, especially with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them right around the corner (that's pretty much a guaranteed hit).
However, it's thought that Doctor Strange will end up finishing its run with $750 million - $850 million. That's an incredible result, and one which guarantees a sequel as it's well beyond what Ant-Man made and right up there with Guardians of the Galaxy. It's fair to say that none of us expected that, but given how good the movie turned out, it probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, right?
