ETERNALS: How The Marvel Studios Film References Superman AND Batman In The MCU - Minor SPOILERS

Eternals contains two direct references to the DC Universe, confirming that fictional versions of Batman and Superman do exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Here's what to be on the lookout for!

Eternals could end up being Marvel Studios' first Rotten film, but it's also the first to directly reference the DC Universe (here's hoping that didn't curse the divisive Phase 4 title).

In trailers and TV spots for the film, we've seen Jack (Esai Daniel Cross), Phastos' son, mistaking Ikaris for Superman. That's because the Eternal shoots laser beams from his eyes, but the hero makes it clear to the boy that he doesn't wear a cape. The fun part of this Easter Egg is that the film reveals the Eternals have inspired many legends over the course of their 6000 years on Earth...perhaps Ikaris did somehow serve as Joe Siegel and Jerry Shuster's basis for the Man of Steel?

Supes isn't the only DC hero mentioned; Harish Patel delivers a scene-stealing performance as Karun Patel, Kingo's camera-wielding valet.

He's compared to Batman's butler Alfred Pennyworth at one point, confirming that the entire DC Universe does, in fact, exist as a fictional entity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's pretty wild to think that the likes of Peter Parker and Ms. Marvel have grown up only reading the adventures of Superman and Batman, though we're assuming Captain America might have at least had his own series.

Such direct references to DC are a surprise; however, director Chloé Zhao previously told Variety: "I take responsibility for that. You write it on the page, show it to Kevin, if he doesn’t say anything, that’s a go. I don’t think there was a conversation. Not really, except, he goes, ‘Oh, that’s cool.'"

Love that.

Honestly I wish they hadn't. It complicates things if we ever get a Marvel vs DC crossover film at some point.

@Nightwing1015 - I can see that as a problem. But most likely it won't happen anyway.

I will see Eternals in the theaters tonight. So many CBM users here don't even see the movies just come here to express their negative opinions or insult the people that have actually seen the movie.

@DoubleD - Are you new to the internet? It's literally 90% of the Twitter population. To hate on anything and everything, especially stuff they haven't seen but fully intend on seeing in "secret".

@bigdannymac - CBM isn't Twitter and have their own set of rules. Even Twitter has rules and if you ignore you get booted off.

I know people that posted stuff on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook that broke their rules and now banned. :)

@DoubleD - I have no idea what road you are trying to head down. I didn't even mention rules. Hating something without seeing it isn't breaking a rule, it's being a troll. I was just pointing out, that no matter where you go online, you'll always find people who will hate on things, without seeing them. I'm not one of those people. Anyways, enjoy the movie. Hopefully it's good.

Makes sense. Other popular media references have been made, so don't see why DC couldn't be referenced as well

I kind of love that this article had to use an image from the theatrical cut of Justice League for Superman. Probably the closest we actually got to seeing Superman in the DCEU.

I saw Eternals yesterday, for me it was an okay movie, entertaining but nothing special, I don't like the Deviants, stupid villains and stupid looking villains, the first after credit scene was cool, can't wait for a space adventure with more Eternals and maybe some cool looking aliens, I hope they hire better writers

Since superhero comics were a thing in the MCU (caps had one) it's only natural other fictional heroes would exist. Well played.

@FleischerSupes - Is that a one-shot or was it a series? I have never seen that cover.

@GeneralZod - Further research revealed this wasn't actually a comic at all, but an in-house style guide for Marvel artists. You'll notice there's no UPC. Most of the famous characters are absent, which is why I thought it was appropriate for the current MCU phase.

Referencing the competition? I hate it. It better not be a trend. Keep the audience in the Marvel Universe...unless it's Deadpool. Then I'll allow it.😂
