ETERNALS: It Doesn't Sound Like Ikaris Actor Richard Madden Expects To Make His MCU Return

Eternals ended with Richard Madden's Ikaris flying into the sun and ending his life, but the actor has now shared his take on whether there's a chance he could return as the immortal hero turned villain!

Eternals was something of a mixed bag, but it delivered quite the gut punch by revealing that Ikaris both killed Ajax and had secretly been manipulating events in order to ensure Arishem would emerge from inside the Earth.

When his team turned their backs on him in order to save humanity, Ikaris decided he would not intervene and instead chose to fly into the sun, seemingly ending his life and Richard Madden's time as part of the MCU. There's been no official word on an Eternals sequel, but the movie ended with a major cliffhanger, and many fans remain hopeful that Ikaris could have somehow survived or simply faked his death.

It's not outside the realm of possibility (we are talking about superheroes here), especially as Arishem may be able to resurrect the synthetic immortal through a replica body. After all, if you're at all familiar with the comic books, you'll know that death and resurrection are a big part of what makes an Eternal, well, eternal.

During a recent interview with ComicBook.com to discuss Prime Video's Citadel, Madden appeared to dash any remaining hopes we have for an MCU return.

"Well, he flew into the sun. That's kind of hard to come back from," the actor said. "Isn't it?"

We don't think he's necessarily teasing anything there and, if anything, would guess he probably isn't champing at the bit to rejoin a franchise that made headlines for delivering Marvel Studios' first "Rotten" movie (at least it now has some company with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania).

Aside from his role in Citadel, Madden remains a fan-favourite choice to play the next James Bond and is often imagined as all manner of DC characters. Batman is somewhere near the top of that list, so perhaps he'll find a place in the new DCU.

We'll see, but let us know how you think Madden could return as Ikaris down in the comments section.

Flew into the sun. Let him be done. Makes his loss mean something.

@Ryguy88 - thats true, but Ikaris is quite important to the comics. He's supposed to be the lead and they changed it on film. Its kinda like killing off Hal Jordan from Green Lanterns and making Kyle Reese the lead...it'll work but its just going to be odd.

@mastakilla39 - Speaking of Green Lanterns, Madden would be a great choice for Hal.

I know pretty much nothing about the Eternals outside of the film. But it seemed like a waste making Icarus one of the villains in the end. Madden has a really great on screen presence, and I think having him stick around would have been better for the franchise than not. Obviously there's a good chance he'll pop back up, but it still feels like a bad move on Marvels part.

No way on hell he's Bond. I know Daniel Craig was short but at least he had bulk, Madden could only play Bond if it were a prequel or Bond jr

@IcePyke - I feel like his return is one of the easiest to explain if they do bring him back. They showed the place where they create the eternals in the movie. Would not be difficult. And like at the beginning of the movie, he would not remember anything and perhaps could be redeemed as a hero.

The biggest problem with this movie was that nobody was particularly likable. Richard Madden is one of the best actors in the bunch, and he just didn’t represent Icarus well. I’m not really sure how much I’d care to see him back. Or really any of them for that matter. Icarus, Sersi, and Thena could have become more major players in the MCU if set up well.
SauronthePower
SauronthePower - 4/18/2023, 4:45 PM
@mountainman - I thought Mikkari, Phastos, Kingo, and Gilgamesh were all very charismatic.

Problem was that Madden was wooden in the part and they basically minimized Jolie and Hayak.

There are some fantastic scenes in this movie (the Hiroshima scene where Phastos’earlier jokiness about introducing the combustion engine to humanity morphs into a horrendous devolution of the original concept and the massacre at Tenochtitlan were both exceptional) but that geta overahadowed by A) the lazy, generic CGI of the Deviants B ) the vanilla action choreograpgy (Mikkari whooping up on Ikkaris is the one excellent exception to this) and above all C) the inroduction of Mahd’Wry was just cramming too much into what was already, by the sheer grandiosity of concept, an overstuffed product. I fully maintain that had they exercised greater cautious efficiency on the initial movie, the Mahd’Wry concept would have represented a great ‘dark theme’ to go with the sequel

@SauronthePower - I loved all the historical stuff but found most of the current day stuff boring. I wish it would have been a true historical epic with less time spent today, and the deviants completely cut out.

@Shivermetimbers - Having said that, even though he's only 36 currently, he may be a bit too old for the age range that it sounds like Gunn wants for the DCU's Batman. I get the feeling that Gunn is aiming for late 20s/early 30s for new DCU actors. But then again, if we're starting off with the DCU's Batman already having his son in play then maybe having Batman in his mid 30s would be the way to go?

1. That movie wasn’t as bad as people say. It wasn’t good but it definitely isn’t the worse marvel movie
2. That actor was wasted in that role. He should play somebody like Cyclops

Honestly, without Richard Madden playing Ikaris, what's the point in continuing the Eternals as a franchise. Besides Sersi, he's probably the most important Eternal in the mythos. Making the Eternals as artificial beings allows any Eternal to return so I'm hoping Marvel Studios is able to get him back despite him perishing in the first film. My fear is folks are catching on to Madden's popularity and he will already be snatched up by another franchise fairly soon making it difficult for him to return.

It's a shame that BOTH Richard Madden and Kit Harington may have been consigned to such little visibility in the MCU when they could had been major characters going forward. One of the issues I've had with Phase 4 is the loss of what I consider was the heart of the MCU, Steve Rogers. Marvel Studios could had built a conflicted, sympathetic character, ala Steve Rogers, in Dane Whitman/Black Knight and used a trajectory to make him a future Avenger but instead seemed to have jettisoned that idea in favor of giving lesser-known characters like Echo and Ironheart more of a priority. I think that's been a huge mistake because fans are looking for characters to latch on to and Phase 4 was about introducing all these new characters without giving any thought to the follow through required to get fans invested in their journeys.

Well...since Feige and friends decided to turn the Eternals into robots (still hate that) and there's a bunch of them made, he could easily be recast as a different version with different memories or whatever. The Eternals go through rebirth and change in the comics quite regularly so it's not that big a deal.

But as someone who actually enjoyed the movie, I don't know that we ever need to see them again. I could just be put off by the fundamental changes they've made to the Eternals and what that now means for Thanos. I just... How do you [frick] up both Eternals AND Inhumans? Smdh.
