There has been some light talk about an "Aquaman" film lately, and I got to thinking about who would be the perfect cast. I have never thought that Aquaman was a silly hero, or one that should be mocked. I actually thought it was cool being a king while being a hero. I enjoyed the television pilot and thought that grounded Aquaman in a world that general audiences would appreciate.
I think that "Aquaman" could follow the trend that DC Comics/Warner Bros. has set up with their films: Batman has a crime saga, Green Lantern is inspired by space opera, etc. Arthur Curry would be well suited to follow the arc of another Arther - King Arthur. I think this film series would be best to follow the story of King Arthur, from a young boy destined to become king to taking over this title.
Well, without further ado, let's see what I've got!
The Director
Terry Gilliam is a gifted director who has filmed such features as "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "The Fisher King", and "12 Monkeys". I think he would be able to give the film a bit of reality while weaving in his own brand of fantasy.
Aquaman
Now for Arthur Curry, I have two choices:
I think Liam Hemsworth is just as talented as his brother, Chris "Thor" Hemsworth. He has appeared in "The Last Song", and will be appearing in "The Expendables 2", and "The Hunger Games".
I saw this pick in a few fan casts before and thought it was brilliant! I loved Hammer in "The Social Network" and I enjoyed his performance as Clyde Tolson in "J. Edgar".
Either way I would be happy with these two as Aquaman!
Mera
Rachel Nichols is an extremely talented actress. Her credits include "Alias", "Charlie Wilson's War", and is now in "Criminal Minds". I think she is a fairly original choice, and would be great as the Queen of Atlantis.
Black Manta
For Aquaman's arch nemesis, I chose Anthony Mackie. While not a household name, I think Mackie has the star potential to be a big hitter in Hollywood. He first caught my attention portraying Tupac Shakur in the film "Notorious", and after that I saw him in the films "Freedomland", "The Hurt Locker" (where he has his greatest recognition), and "The Adjustment Bureau".
Orm Curry (Ocean Master)
Orm Curry is Aquaman's brother, and the darker side to the Aquaman coin. I think Wentworth Miller would be spectacular as the evil brother. I would not want him to be Ocean Master in the first film, but to the progress as a villain until the third film or so, like Harry Osborn in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" film series.
Wentworth Miller is best known for his roles in "Prison Break", and "Stealth". He is a very intense actor that could do for the role what Mark Strong did for Sinestro, and what Michael Fassbender did for Magneto.
Tom Curry
Colin Firth is a talented actor who I think would be fantastic as Tom Curry, Arthur's adoptive father. I think he would be great as an anchor for Arthur, especially after he accepts his role as King of Atlantis.
Cal Durham
As one of Aquaman's closest friends and former enemies, I think Henry Simmons would be ideal. He has been in "Are We There Yet?", and "Madea's Family Reunion".
Atlan
I have seen Josh Holloway in a few casts for Aquaman, but I think he would be better suited as the father to Arthur and Orm. Atlan is a magician and would operate almost like Merlin to Arthur.
Jim Lockhart
In the original comics, Jim Lockhart is the superhero known as the Red Torpedo. What I would like to see in the film is sort of an updated version of this character. I see him as an older Indiana Jones style character. He used to be an adventurer back in his day, and now he is regarded as a drunk who lives on his boat - you guessed it - "The Red Torpedo". He knows secrets of Atlantis and helps Arthur get a handle on the mythology of the culture of Atlantis.
Christopher Lloyd is my first and only choice for Jim Lockhart. I think he would play the isolated adventurer quite well.
Vulko
John Cleese would be delightful as the scientific mind behind Atlantis and its cities. It would also be great to see him re-team with Terry Gilliam!
Atsiul
Derek Mears has appeared in countless television shows, such as "ER", "Alias", "The Shield", as well as the films "Men in Black II", and "Friday the 13th". I think he would be terrific as the head of the royal guard to Queen Mera.
King Shark
This may seem like an odd choice, but I think Javier Bardem would absolutely rock as King Shark! Javier Bardem is best known for his roles in "No Country for Old Men" and "Biutiful". I think he would be able to add layers of depth to King Shark, other than just making him a violent beast.
Charybdis
I know Wes Bentley was in another comic book film, "Ghost Rider", but I think he would be great as Charybdis! He is best known for his roles in "American Beauty", "P2", and will be appearing in "Hunger Games". I think Wes Bentley will provide a powerful force for Aquaman.
Lady of the Lake
The Lady of the Lake is a character taken right from Arthurian legend. I think Cate Blanchett, based on her roles in "The Lord of the Rings" and "Elizabeth".
Well that's my fan cast! I hope you enjoyed it! Sound off down below!!!
