EXT. HEINMUND TOWN SQUARE – NIGHT
An unremarkable German rustic setting. There’s a church, an inn, a tavern, a row of houses, and little signs of life. Quite optimal for a British spy’s hiding place.
SUBTITLE:
“Heinmund, North Rhine-Westphalia”
INT. INN ROOM
Steve walks in to the room, dressed in a suit. He flings his suitcase at the bed and switches the light on. He goes to remove his jacket…
WOMAN (O.S.)
(British accent)
Halt.
… but he stops. Steve isn’t distressed, reassured of hearing English being spoken, but isn’t pleased with someone having the drop on him.
WOMAN (O.S.)
Turn around.
Steve turns around and comes face to face with MARGARET ‘PEGGY’ CARTER (27), standing in a dark nook. A young Marlena Deitricht type in a black frock, holding a suppressed pistol steadily trained at Steve’s chest.
WOMAN/PEGGY
You took your time getting here,
Didn’t you?
STEVE
Things to attend to.
Is this location secure?
PEGGY
We are in a German town, but…
More or less. The woman who
Runs the Inn was with the German
Resistance, when there was a resistance.
PEGGY
Extraordinary woman. Acquainted with
Alois Rooten, you remember him, don’t you?
From Rotterdam?
STEVE
‘Rijk’ Rooten, from Dordrecht.
I am who I say I am, so why don’t you lower
That gun sometime before the Russians overrun
This town?
Peggy lowers the gun and places the safety pin.
PEGGY
Dreadful sorry. You more than most know of
Hydra’s fondness for body doubles.
PEGGY
I am a bit surprised they don’t have a blond,
Blue-eyed ubermensch body double, actually.
Anyway, it’s good to see you again, Captain
America.
STEVE
And you, Captain Carter.
PEGGY
I trust you’re not by yourself?
Steve goes to the wall and bangs on it with his fist thrice, then once again.
STEVE
I’ve got two men with me.
PEGGY
I expected more.
The door opens. Bucky and Dino walk in, dressed in suits just like Steve.
STEVE
(indicating)
Tech Corporal Dino Manelli.
Corporal James Barnes.
Captain Margaret Carter.
PEGGY
Gentlemen.
STEVE
We’ll head out tomorrow at o-ten-hundred.
PEGGY
You all speak German, I hope?
STEVE
(somewhat perplexed)
Dino and me do, though he’s the
One who can pull off a believable accent.
Bucky can’t say much that’s polite.
Why do you ask?
PEGGY
(reluctant)
We… We’ve got work to do here.
STEVE
My orders are to get you back to England.
What are you talking about?
PEGGY
I was working with shoddy equipment, so I
Understand if parts of my communiqué were
Misunderstood or lost.
PEGGY
But I’ve recently come into valuable information,
That we need to act on immediately.
In a couple nights time, a clandestine meeting is to be
Held in Dusseldorf, at the summer home of Commander
Von Roeder.
BUCKY
Can’t be that clandestine if you learned about, now,
Could it?
STEVE
Bucky.
BUCKY
…Ma’am.
STEVE
What is this meeting?
PEGGY
Haven’t the faintest, I’m afraid. But I do know of
Who could very likely be in attendance; Von Krummpt,
Of the Luftwaffe, a handful of SS Colonels…
And the Red Skull.
Dino and Bucky are stunned.
STEVE
Forty Eight hours?
PEGGY
Closer to forty-six, actually.
STEVE
The prevailing theory in London is that the Red Skull
Is just a smoke screen for Von Strucker.
PEGGY
Theory being the operative word.
BUCKY
Cap, come on… Let’s just stick to the plan.
DINO
Bucky.
BUCKY
Red Skull, whoever he is, spent these four years being
So guarded and now he’s showing up in person for a
Meeting a hundred kilometers away from Berlin and
Somehow she managed to find out about it?
Sounds like a trap!
PEGGY
Corporal… I was making unaccompanied excursions into
Nazi Germany before you’d learnt which end of a rifle
To point away from yourself. ‘She’ knows a trap from a
Legitimate opportunity.
PEGGY
There is a meeting in Dusseldorf in two nights, and if
There’s anything true to the Red Skull identity, which
There is judging by everything I’d seen or heard these
Four years, then he’s going to be there.
Dino stifles a smirk as Bucky is speechless. Steve turns to face the Corporals.
STEVE
Set up the radio.
INT. INN ROOM – NIGHT – LATER
Bucky and Dino are working on a mostly assembled special-purpose field radio which’s parts were hidden in their two suitcases. Steve and Peggy talk while sitting on the couch as the first leafs through a bunch of documents.
PEGGY
…The fire wiped out all signs of the Lieutenant
Colonel’s suicide. These documents will not be missed.
What’ve you been up to recently?
STEVE
This and that.
PEGGY
The Bulge?
STEVE
Yeah. Bucky and Dino too, with the 82nd.
DINO
We’re ready, Cap.
Steve lays the documents on the table as he stands up and heads to the table where the radio has been set. He picks up the receiver, the call to London already made, and speaks.
STEVE
Galahad calling Buckler. Over.

BUCKER (V.O.)

INT. H.O.D. HQ RADIO ROOM
Philips is now behind the microphone, with Falsworth standing near.
PHILIPS
Galahad. You’ll take Dreizehn and your men to
The meeting’s location. You will ascertain the identity
Of the Red Skull and any other participants. If possible,
Eliminate him.
PHILIPS
Defer to Dreizehn, but if cover compromise imminent,
Retreat. Over.
INT. INN ROOM
STEVE
Yes, sir. Over and out.
Steve puts down the received and turns off the radio. Turns to the other three.
STEVE
We move out at O-Six-hundred hours. Get some sleep.
