This is a character I find to be very human and relatable, most would say he’s the poor mans Batman or he’s a great B character which is not wrong per say, but I think of him more than that. I first got into Green Arrow through Justice League Unlimited animated series, I saw the character and his actions and thought this guy seems pretty cool let me see if I can find some good comic stories on him.
So I picked up the Green Arrow trade Quiver by Kevin Smith and Phil Hester I thought it was an ok story, but I really did like how Kevin made Ollie such a down to earth guy. Another thing I found interesting about him his is political standpoint, he’s a liberal the hero that fights for the little guy.
Ollie is also a very flawed hero, throughout the years they’ve manage to make him a hero who makes a lot of ill rational decisions in his life and with some severe repercussions, he’s a total horn dog when it comes to women so much so that he’s had children from random women he’s slept around with, but what really strikes me is that when need be Oliver will cross the line and kill a super villain. In recent years during the Cry For Justice Storyline and the Rise and Fall Of Green Arrow, Oliver sacrificed his friendships and the love of his life Black Canary just to get revenge and went on a killing spree.
During the Brightest Day storyline I was liking what they were doing with his character, Ollie realized that he had step over the line, but by the time he did his life was a mess and he needed to build himself back up to being a hero again. Before the reboot started I would have love to see where they would have taken his character beyond that point. I’m happy that DC has given him some spotlight though, he was a major character in Smallville, they gave him his own animated short and he’s been showing up a lot more lately.
Getting on his sidekicks and comparing them to the Bat family, I’d say Oliver has had a rougher time with his soldiers so to speak. I mean sure Batman lost Jason Todd in a very violent manor and Joker crippled Barbra but Ollie has had to deal with a lot worse in my opinion. His costume has gone through many changes over the years; his modern look though has to be my favorite look for him. Well that’s the character of Green Arrow/Oliver Queen and why I like him.
