I'd like to mention that I try not to be bias towards either studio and anything written here is just an opinion. I like many others can be harsh when judging an actors performance or the way a character was written. So with my best intentions as to just kill some time and start an interesting discussion of which Villains rule the Universes. Here are my current Worst 6 and Top 10 villains amongst the DCEU and MCU (This has to do with only villains whose performances we have seen on the big screen so far).
Top Ten DCEU and MCU Villains
#10 Amanda Waller from Suicide Squad - While the cast of the movie did a great job Viola Davis was the stand out villain. Her performance was on point, her character was ruthless and intimidating while still maintaining some kind of humanity by only doing bad things for the good of the nation. She might not be the villain of the film but she ends up being the most intimidating character in the whole movie. I will say one of her stand out moments that earns her a spot on this list is when she shoots her own team of agents because they didn't have proper clearance to know what they where learning about the operation they were assigned to. |
#9 Ares from Wonder Woman hulk- I just saw the Wonder Woman movie and it was great. **SPOILERS AHEAD** I was expecting Ares to just be a brooding, unstoppable, angry man who becomes a monster like god, but what we got was way better in my opinion. When they reveal who Ares is and he reveals his plan and explains what Wonder Woman is I was happy to know it was more than just a simple story of hero vs villain. The fight between Wonder Woman and Ares was almost as Epic as Superman vs Zod. I think he deserves recognition for being a surprising and action packed character. I will say I kind of saw the twist coming, but they did a pretty good job of hiding who Ares was till the final climax. |

#8 Emil Blonsky/Abomination from the Incredible Hulk - As the second movie for the MCU the Incredible Hulk was a hit for some and a miss more others. I thought the movie was excellent at the time it came out. One of the best parts of the movie was Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky who starts out as a mercenary just trying to capture Bruce Banner/the Hulk, when he gets an opportunity to use the super soldier serum used on Steve Rogers Blonsky takes it and becomes stronger, faster and a little more power hungry. At the end of the film he gets his opportunity to get power like the Hulk and so he takes his chance and from that point on a battle better than most cbm fight scenes ensues between the Hulk and Abomination, Emil's transformed evil counterpart. The fight in this movie was better than any cbm fight I had seen prior to the movie. He's still one of my favorite villains and in my opinion under rated by cbm fans. |
#7 Faora from Man of Steel - This is one of the best female villains ever made in cbm history. Most of the time I consider villains with little to no speaking lines as henchmen, but Faora earns her own spot as a villain. Antje Traue as Faora is one of the only roles I've seen her in besides Seventh Son and I have to say she did a great job. She comes off Super intimidating, fearless and non-sympathetic to the hero and the humans. She kicks Superman's butt as well as terrorizes the US armed forces. the only way she could be stopped was to be sent back to the Phantom Zone or possibly killed by Colonel Nathan Hardy. Did she survive? I like to think so. |
#6 Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron - Not everyone will agree with this one but you know what, I don't care. I thought Ultron was a very menacing villain, the look started off very cannon to the comic book style of robot from the original Avengers comics. As he evolves his body and brain throughout the movie he builds his army and unleashes his plan to recreate the world in his image. David Spader nails his role with the linguistics you would expect from a Robot with a superiority complex. The only thing that would've made the villain better is if he was more Robotic and less quick witted with verbal comebacks. I understand why they made him that way as Stark made the technology that is mimicking his a.i. with more homicidal tendencies. |
#5 Red Skull from Captain America: the First Avenger - Where is the Red Skull? What did the cube do to him or better yet, where did it send him? These are questions I was left asking after the First Avengers debut film. Hugo Weaving played the role well. He brought the Red Skull to life with the amazing facial prosthetics and a good German accent. While his performance was great it felt like they gave him too little of action moments with Captain America. We get to see Cap and Skull meet for the first time and they each get 1 good punch in but then in the final climax when they meet again the fight is so brief that we had to look back at this movie after the Avengers first film to comprehend what might've happened to this villain. |
#4 Obadiah Stane / Iron Monger from Iron Man- One of the first villains of the MCU Obadiah wins us over with his Jeff Bridges like charm. Hes as smooth talking and quick witted as his business partner Tony Stark. He seems to be a great guy until you find out he was behind Tony's capture the whole time. After the reveal his motives are revealed and his ruthless business techniques make him a dangerous guy, but his tech makes him a very dangerous villain. I think Jeff Bridges did a great job with the role and the character was written well. His performance has made it hard for any other tech genius villain trying to destroy Stark/Iron Man to be taken as seriously. |
#3 General Zod / Doomsday from Man of Steel / Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice- This villain gets to take his first performance which was amazing in Man of Steel to new heights when he evolves after his death and transformation by Lex Luthor into Doomsday. Just kidding on the Doomsday day part, but not really. If you look at what Michael Shannon did with Zod in MOS you can see he made it hard for most villains after him to be taken as seriously. His performance was amazing and the action packed final fight was destruction porn at its finest. When Zod appears in BvS he is dead and transformed into Superman's Doomsday. Aside from the slow evolving every time he overloads on energy I think the Doomsday part of the film was the best part. Watching Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and ??Lois Lane??(yeah, she helped find the spear) take on this unstoppable monster was Just as fun to watch as Zod vs Superman. |
#2 the Winter Soldier- So you might argue with me that Bucky Barnes is not a villain, but hear me out. Bucky is not a villain, but when his brain washed mind becomes the Winter Soldier Bucky becomes one of the scariest villains in the MCU. He is like the Terminator of the Marvel movies. He's unstoppable for almost everyone, he has the ability to be stealthy and disappear in the blink of an eye and his weapons as well as hand to hand combat can only be contended with by the best. The only two people scene that can give him a run for his money has been Cap and Black Panther. Even in Civil War the Winter Soldier just plows through an entire locked down facility only to be slowed down by our heroes out of uniform. The Winter Soldier has one of the best openings of a villain ever seen in a cbm. |
#1 Loki- Can't wait to hear the hate for this choice, but yeah, Loki is the best damn villain. Tom Hiddleston's Loki was ok in Thor. The Thor film itself was just ok with amazing cgi and acting. The story was a bit unfocused at times but the third act becomes amazing. Thor and Loki not only have an epic battle but Loki is the first villain to make me feel bad for him before he falls into the abyss of space. Then when we see the Avengers film they start with Loki and the movie just takes you on a super hero adventure of a life time with a villain who gets more evil and menacing through out the whole movie. Then when you think he might be remorseful of what he's done, he stabs his brother Thor just to prove there is no going back. When we see him in Thor the Dark World he shows us again why he's the mystical god of mischief. I'm looking forward to see what he's up to in Thor Ragnarok. |
