For I Have Sinned Excerpt

For I Have Sinned Excerpt

Taking a break from fanfic screenplays to bring you guys my first original piece. Not all of it of course. Aspiring screenwriter hopes to bring screenplays but hopes to get thoughts on original work to improve fanfics.

You can't make any film work unless you have good drama. Thus is why I haven't worked on my fanfic screenplays for Ghost Rider and Mortal Kombat.  Unless you can get good drama and tell a good story, there's really no point except keep trying.  Which is  why my first script, despite its title it's not a religious film, is currently being worked on. It's a trial thing at the moment so, if anyone else uses celtx.com please let me know how I can post it on here in a better way. I want your guys' thoughts on it so far. Love to hear your guys' thoughts on it so far. Please, all contstructive criticism is welcome. Enjoy!

FADE IN:

EXT: LOCAL PARK - DAY - FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

TOMMY FOSTER, 15, walks across the park while listening to alternative rock on his mp3 player. He sits on a bench, leans his head back and closes his eyes. He drowns into the music. At peace with himself and life when he gets a tap on the shoulder. It's MARKUS TAYLOR, one of the kids from school.

MARKUS

I don't mean to bug but, I was wondering if you wanted to play some one on one with me or even something as simple as horse or pig.

TOMMY

No thanks, it's okay.

MARKUS

Are you sure? Personally, I don't really want to see you sit there alone. I know we really don't know each other but, you seem alright.

TOMMY

I'm of the belief that if you're not good at something, to not repeatedly do it and look like an idiot.

MARKUS

Practice makes perfect. Plus, it helps get you some girls.

TOMMY

[frick] it. I'll play whore.

MARKUS

It's called horse.

TOMMY

Yeah well, we're playing whore and maybe one on one after.

MARKUS (CHUCKLES)

Whore, I like it.

The two play whore and one on one, MARKUS destroys TOMMY at both games but the two laugh about it.

MARKUS

I see you alone a lot at school. How come?

TOMMY

I'm not exactly someone you become friends with. I tend to be a bit of a loner and I like things that aren't considered cool.

MARKUS

Na man, I get it. You are who you are and you won't change just to fit in. I respect that. I know I come across as one of the "popular" kids but, truth is, I just do what I do. I know who I am and I don't hide it. Girls just happen to like an athletic guy is all.

TOMMY

To other people, I just come across weird. Which is fine by me.

MARKUS

Dude, It's not weird to like rock music. Hell, I love Shinedown. I like rock music too. But, I'm a bit more open and like different genres.

Markus continues to shoot the basketball into the hoop.

MARKUS

How about this, come spend the next few days with me. You'll see I'm not as bad as you may think.

TOMMY

I don't know.

MARKUS

Trust me, you'll have fun.

TOMMY

I don't trust people I don't know.

MARKUS

Tommy, you've got to just learn to go with it sometimes. It'll help you out in the long run. How are you going to trust anyone if you don't give them a chance to show you who they are?

TOMMY

Fine. I'll try doing this thing that you call, trust.

Markus chuckles and wraps his arm around Tommy.

MARKUS

We're going to turn this whole loner thing around for ya broski.  Give me a month and you'll end up on a date with some pretty girl that you never thought you'd have a chance with.

TOMMY (CHUCKLES)

We'll see. Let's try this trust thing first.

Weeks go by and the two form a bond that Tommy never expected to occur.

CUT TO:

EXT: OLD TRAIN TRACKS - DAY

The two soon find themselves walking down an old train tracks. Sort of like in the film Stand By Me. But, less boys and no train.

MARKUS

You know that brunette with those puppy dog brown eyes, Rachel?

TOMMY

Yeah. What about her?

MARKUS

I want you to ask her out on a date.

TOMMY

No way in hell is that happening.

MARKUS

Why not? She's real pretty and you've broke that loner image of yours.

TOMMY

I wouldn't know what to say. I would get too nervous. I'd [frick] up the date.

MARKUS

Don't worry about it bro. It'll be a double date. I had it all planned out. Plus, I've already asked a girl out on a double date so, you practically have to ask Rachel.

TOMMY

Who did you ask?

MARKUS

The gorgeous blonde, Sara. Took some convincing seeing as how she views me as an asshole.

TOMMY

[frick]. Now I have to do it.

MARKUS

I told you Tom. I got your back.

TOMMY

Sara was right. You are an asshole.

MARKUS

You act like you didn't know that I was.

CUT TO:

INT: SCHOOL HALLWAY

Tommy sees RACHEL at her locker. She is prettier than he had initially thought. He has the butterflies. He decides to be brave and just go for it.

TOMMY

Hey! Hey, Rachel!

RACHEL

Hey Tommy. What's up?

TOMMY (STUTTERING)

I--I was wondering. I mean, if you don't want to that's cool. But, I was just um.. I was just wondering if maybe you wanted to go on a date with me. A double date.

RACHEL (SMILING)

Okay. Yeah, totally. When?

TOMMY

I was thinking maybe Saturday night. Pick you up at eight?

RACHEL

Okay. See you then.

Rachel smiles as she turns and walks away. Just as Markus comes up from behind and pats Tommy on the back.

MARKUS

What did she say man?

TOMMY

She said yes.

MARKUS

Hell yeah! See man, I told you!

TOMMY

Tell Sara we're picking them up at eight on Saturday night.

MARKUS

Perfect! Anything else?

TOMMY

Yeah. Try not to be an ass on the date.

Tommy turns around and heads to class.

MARKUS

Come on! That's my thing!

Markus rolls his eyes as he turns around and heads to class.

CUT TO:

INT: RACHEL'S BEDROOM - SATURDAY NIGHT

SARA and Rachel are getting ready for the date. Sara is putting make up on as Rachel tries on a dress. A pretty cliché part of the film if you ask me.

RACHEL

What about this?

SARA

Why are you so worried about what dress to wear?

RACHEL

Because, it's a date. You're suppose to look good. Not to mention, the way Tommy asked me out, it was kind of cute.

Sara chuckles and shakes her head.

SARA

In what way was it cute?

RACHEL

You could tell he was nervous. He was stuttering when he was trying to ask. It was cute. I don't think he's been on a date before.

SARA

Rachel, I don't think he's ever talked to a girl outside of his own family. This is the same kid who would sit alone at lunch until about a month or so ago.

RACHEL

At least my date isn't an asshole. Why did you tell Markus, yes?

SARA

It was the most cliché thing to do. Good looking jock asks the babe to a date, I figured [frick] it.

RACHEL

If it was so cliché then, why yes?

SARA

If I said no, I would be the school retard. Every girl in school except for you and the outsiders have been with him.

RACHEL

Yeah, he's probably got a dieses. Probably a small dick to go with it.

SARA

I didn't say I was going to sleep with him. I'm a babe, not a slut.

RACHEL

There's more to you than that. You just don't show it in school just so you can avoid being an outcast, you know it.

SARA

Maybe. I know I'm not entirely shallow.

Rachel tries on another dress.

RACHEL

How about this?

SARA (LOOKING)

You look hot. I'd [frick] you if I was a lesbo.

RACHEL

Not the reaction I was looking for but, close enough.

Rachel looks in the mirror as she puts some make up on.

RACHEL

Tommy is probably the safe choice but, I'm looking to try something different. I'm tired of being hurt by assholes.

The girls hear the doorbell ring and someone knock on the door.

RACHEL

What time is it?

SARA

Probably eight o'clock.

RACHEL

Shit! Let's not keep them waiting.

The girls hurry down stairs as they see Tommy and Markus through the window.

INT: RACHEL'S HOUSE - DOWNSTAIRS - NIGHT

The interior of her house is no different than the kind of house you'd see in the city. Well, at least in the media anyway. Rachel opens the door.

RACHEL (SMILING)

Hey boys!

TOMMY (JAW DROPPED)

Wow. You look absolutely beautiful.

RACHEL (BLUSHING)

Thank you.

SARA

Hey Markus.

MARKUS

Hiya sweet cheeks.

SARA

Really?

TOMMY (WHISPERING TO MARKUS)

Don't be an asshole.

MARKUS

Sorry, Sara. In all honesty, you look really pretty tonight.

SARA

Why thank you.

RACHEL

So, where we going?

TOMMY

We were thinking that Markus and I would pay for dinner at this really nice restaurant in town and maybe go for a walk in the park after.

RACHEL

Sounds lovely.

MARKUS

Don't let Tommy fool ya, it was all his idea.

SARA

I was going to say, I doubt that you would've had the heart and balls to come up with something so romantic.

MARKUS

Is this how tonight is going to --

TOMMY

We should probably head to the restaurant. We have reservations.

RACHEL

Agreed.

INT: RESTAURANT - NIGHT

Tommy and Markus open the door for the girls. The inside of the restaurant looks like what you'd see in Applebee's or Lonestar. Nice place. Too bad the people aren't so much. Once in, Tommy approaches a waitress.

WAITRESS

How many will it be tonight?

TOMMY

Actually we have reservations for four. Last name, Foster.

The waitress looks at her list.

WAITRESS

Follow me.

Tommy, Makrus and the girls follow the waitress to their table. The boys pull out the chairs for them as Sara and Rachel sit down and takes their jackets off.

RACHEL

Tell me about yourself Tommy.

TOMMY

What do you want to know?

RACHEL

Anything.

MARKUS

You'd dig my boy. He's the shit.

Sara starts laughing which in turn makes Markus smile as he finds it adorable and starts laughing with her. All the while, TOMMY just sits there in silence, embarrassed and becomes shy.

RACHEL

You don't have to answer Tommy.

SARA

C'mon Rach, that was pretty funny.

TOMMY

It's okay. I'm just me. My parents split when I was young, hardly any friends and I just love things like moves and comic books.

Rachel looks at him with curiosity. He's different than what she is used to.

TOMMY

I'm just a loner, living life day by day. What about you?

RACHEL

What about me?

TOMMY

Tell me about you.

RACHEL

Why so curious?

TOMMY

This Is usually the part where the girl talks about herself and her life while the guy just looks into those eyes and just sees all the beauty in the world. She makes him feel more confident, more of a man.

RACHEL (CHUCKLES)

You certainly know the beats and clićhe. Although, the way you put it was a little cheesy.

Tommy chuckles a little bit while Markus and Sara talk among themselves.

RACHEL

You think I'm beautiful?

TOMMY

The most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

RACHEL

You're pretty cheesy. I like that.

TOMMY

Are we gonna order food or what?

RACHEL

I was thinking the same. I'm starved.

The dialogue is muted as we play a montage as they talk, eat and leave.

EXT: PARK - NIGHT

We see the two couples go off in different directions. But, we follow Tommy and Rachel.

TOMMY

You never did tell me about yourself.

RACHEL

You were so cheesy in your responses, I completely forgot to.

TOMMY

Under the moon and talking to the most honest guy you'll meet. I think it's a good idea.

Rachel sits down on a bench as Tommy kneels down without getting on his knees and rests his arms on the same bench. The same sort of park you'd see in the films. Bushes, roses, a fountain, park benches. But, it's better than those movies. Why? Cause it's in this movie.

RACHEL

I live with my dad. Mom passed when I was young. I don't really talk about it. I am not what I appear to be. In school, I seem like a popular girl without being a stereotypical cheerleader. But, I'm a bit of a bookworm and I'm fairly intelligent.

TOMMY

You sound more alone than you come across.

RACHEL

A little bit. I have Sara though, she's great.

TOMMY

She seems a little bit like Markus.

RACHEL

In what way?

TOMMY

She's the best friend who is a complete asshole. She's just a bit more fiesty.

RACHEL

Well, once you get to know her --

TOMMY

She's not as bad as she seemed. Again, like Markus.

RACHEL (CHUCKLES)

Yeah. I guess so.

TOMMY

The way -- the way I asked you out on the date. I'm sorry.

RACHEL

Why are you sorry?

TOMMY

It was embarrassing. I never asked out a girl before cause I was always an outcast and loner so, no girls really showed interest.

RACHEL (GIGGLES)

I could tell. Tommy, Hun, it's fine. It was actually pretty cute.

TOMMY

Would you like to go out again? Just us this time?

RACHEL (SMILING)

Yes. I would actually like that. Not that this was bad or anything. Markus and Sara just made it a little uncomfortable is all.

TOMMY

Agreed. How about I walk you home.

RACHEL

That would be quite gentleman like of you.

Tommy  gets up and holds out his hand. She takes it and the two leave the park. Thinking maybe it'll go somewhere.

CUT TO:

EXT: RACHEL'S HOME - FRONT DOOR - NIGHT

RACHEL

Thank you for the date, Tommy. It was more romantic than I expected.

TOMMY

Turned out better than I expected.

The two of them laugh a little.

RACHEL

Walk me home tomorrow?

TOMMY

I'll pick you up at your locker.

Rachel kisses his cheek then runs inside. Tommy turns around and starts walking. He then goes to turn back around and hears a voice.

RACHEL (OUT HER WINDOW)

Goodnight.

TOMMY

Night beautiful.

CUT TO:

EXT: SIDEWALK - DAY

Tommy is walking to school in high spirits as if he actually got laid, when Markus catches up to him.

MARKUS

Where did ya go last night? I thought we were gonna meet back up at the park entrance and walk them home together?

TOMMY

Sorry. Rachel asked me to walk her home after a while.

MARKUS

That bad huh? I'm sorry. I know I blew it last night.

TOMMY

Actually, it wasn't that bad. She had fun last night. We are going out again.

MARKUS

Okay, cool. I'll ask Sara then.

TOMMY

No Markus, it's just going to be me and Rachel this time. No one else.

MARKUS

Okay, I get it. Respectable and understandable.

TOMMY

Thanks man.

MARKUS

I had an idea though.

TOMMY

What?

MARKUS

After high school, we should join the military together.

TOMMY

I don't know man.

MARKUS

I'm sure you'll be fine dude.

TOMMY

I don't know Markus, I don't like the idea of being away from everyone for so long.

MARKUS

What are you talking about? You're not all that close with your family. I'm the only person your close to. I'm your best friend, your brother. We'll rule it all.

TOMMY

I'll think about it.

CUT TO:

EXT: BOOT CAMP - FOUR YEARS LATER - DAY

Tommy and Markus are seen getting their uniforms on.

MARKUS

Ready bro?

TOMMY

As ready as I'll ever be.

A montage is then played of Tommy and Markus in their entire run in boot camp. Busting their asses, dedicating themselves to be ready to protect their country.

FADE OUT:

INT: RECRUITS ROOM - NIGHT

Tommy is seen taking is gear off, preparing for bed. He hears someone get on the top bunk.

TOMMY

Hey Markus

MARKUS

Jesus Tom, that starts to get scary after a while.

TOMMY

Sorry man.

Markus jumps down from the bed.

MARKUS

What's eating ya man?

TOMMY

Nothing. I'm fine.

MARKUS

Don't bullshit me, man. We've been best friends. No, brothers. For almost a decade now. I know when something is bothering you.

TOMMY

I don't know man. Maybe -- Maybe, I'm just afraid of what could happen. Maybe Rachel leaves me, maybe one of us dies. Maybe one or neither one of us comes home the same. War changes people Markus.

Markus sits on the bed next to Tommy and wraps his arm around his shoulders.

MARKUS

I get it man. You're nervous. You're over thinking though. We're going to go do a good thing. Keep your mind focused so you don't get killed. When you get a letter, then that's when you think about Rachel. But, I need you focused. I'm not losing my brother and you're sure as hell not losing me. That's a damn fact.

TOMMY

I know man. Thanks. Just -- scattered is all.

Markus pats Tommy on the shoulder before hopping back into bed.

MARKUS

You'll be alright bud. We're just gonna go kick so much ass.

TOMMY (UNSURE LOOK)

You do realize we're probably gonna see little to no action, right?

MARKUS

[frick] me. That's right.

TOMMY (CHUCKLES)

We're soldiers. As you said, we're doing a good thing. We're not going to rule the world like we were thinking when we were fifteen. We should've been smarter actually. Can't be that naive anymore. Night man.

MARKUS

Night.

FADE OUT:

FADE IN:

EXT: AIRBASE - DAY

Tommy and Markus are seen in their uniforms as they are carrying their bags boarding a plan to go overseas. You can see that Markus is excited to go but Tommy is clearly a little scared to go overseas.

MARKUS

This is it man. The minute we swore to Uncle Sam, there was no going back.

TOMMY

Yeah. I just -- a little scared is all. Also missing Rachel right now.

MARKUS

Oh my god, Tommy. Forget her. I know you two love each other and are going to miss each other. I thought we talked about this. Look, I love and am going to miss Sara so much. Hell, she's probably bawling her eyes out right now. But, my focus is solely on getting the job done. That should be your focus.

TOMMY

I know man. I know.

MARKUS

Here. Something to calm your nerves.

Tommy looks down and sees an empty bottle and a can of dip.

TOMMY

When did you start doing that?

MARKUS

This morning. It works though. First time, you get a buzz. Possibly puke. I doubt you will though. Try it. It should calm your nerves.

Markus packs the can and hands it to Tommy. Tommy opens with curiosity and instantly can smell it.

TOMMY

Jesus Christ, this shit stinks like hell.

MARKUS

Take a pinch then put it in your lip. Front, side, doesn't matter. Just not up top.

Tommy shakes his head, grabs a pinch then puts it inside the front of his lip. Markus hands him the bottle and Tommy spits into it.

MARKUS

Try not to get it on your tongue. At least not for a while. Use your finger to pack it in for now.

TOMMY (SLUR IN HIS WORDS)

Okay. I'm definitely feeling the buzz.

Markus laughs as does Tommy while Tommy spits in the bottle again. Disgusting sight to see but hey, what are ya gonna do?

TOMMY

How long am I suppose to have this in for?

MARKUS

Half hour to forty five. We're gonna be on the plane for a while so, I would keep it in a little longer and then take it out and take a drink of Mountain Dew or something.

TOMMY

Dude, I have water.

MARKUS

Fune, take a little bit of my Pepsi because water is the worst thing to drink after dipping.

The plane starts to take off and before they know it, they're in the sky.

MARKUS

Ever flown before?

TOMMY

No, that's why you have the window.

MARKUS

Fair point.

Tommy nods his head and spits again. Still disgusting. Markus can tell something is wrong.

MARKUS

She's going to be fine. I promise. Sara and her got an apartment together, remember?

TOMMY

Yeah. I remember. That's not what scares me.

MARKUS

I know her leaving does. Just gotta keep focused bro.

INT - SARA & RACHEL'S APARTMENT - DAY

Sara is seen putting away groceries while Rachel is going through the mail.

SARA

Hun, you're not going to get a letter from him right away. You two are obsessed with each other. This will actually be good for you two cause this obsessive love is unhealthy.

RACHEL

I know. We've been together since freshman year. Been a long time so -- I just guessed that he would've proposed before he left.

SARA

Thats why you keep checkin for a letter? To see if he will bring it up or ask?

RACHEL

I don't know -- maybe just to see if he will imply he was going to.

SARA

We're going to go to a party tonight.

RACHEL

You can go. I'm going to stay.

SARA

No, you're coming with. You're gonna take your mind off of Tommy.

RACHEL

Alright, fine.

SARA

Thank you! Now help me with these groceries please. Take your mind off of shit.

Rachel puts down the mail and helps Sara put away groceries, the scene begins to fade as we see a photo of Rachel and Tommy together on the fridge.

FADE OUT:

FADE IN:

AFGHANISTAN BASE - DAY

Tommy and Markus are putting their personal belongings away while also getting ready to head out. The base is packed. Soldiers everywhere you look.

MARKUS

This is it.

TOMMY

Yeah, I know. You said that on the plane.

MARKUS

Cheer up man. It was your choice to do this. Now you have to live with it. Everything is going to be fine. You're my older little brother. I got your back.

TOMMY (SNAPS)

Yes! I know! Jesus Markus, you've got to lighten up and let me deal with this my way. I'm sorry but you're not helping any what so ever. I got your back too but, lay off man. Jesus [frick]ing Christ.

MARKUS

Whatever man.

TOMMY

Dude, I appreciate you trying but it's getting to be too much already. Just lay off for a while.

SARGENT WRIGHT

Alright ladies. The next few days are going to be a piece of cake as long as you and your brothers in arms don't [frick] this up. It's simple. Nobody leaves this city simply cause we need to make sure of it for security reasons. Anyone start a riot, knock them on their ass. Got it?

ALL MARINES

Sir yes sir!

SARGENT WRIGHT

Alright then.

Sargent Robert Wright walks over to Tommy with a stern look on his face.

SARGENT WRIGHT

Listen here boy. I don't care who you are but you better listen good. I don't care how pissed off you are cause one of your brothers in arms is irritating you. You chose to be a part of this, now deal with it. The only one that's going to do any yelling in here is me. Got it?

TOMMY (LOOKS DEAD IN THE EYE)

Sir. Yes. Sir.

SARGENT WRIGHT

Are we going to have a problem? Cause if we do, I'll adjust your attitude real quick for ya boy.

TOMMY

It's Tommy and yes. I do understand sir.

SARGENT WRIGHT

Finish gearing up then you and butt buddy next to you will load up in one of the trucks.

Sargent Wright walks away and Markus walks next to Tommy.

MARKUS

The [frick] I do to deserve "butt buddy"? Whatever Sargent Asshole.

Tommy finishes gearing up as he and Markus head out to the truck as the last two to load it. The truck begins driving them out of the base and into the city.

CUT TO:

INT: BAR - LADIES NIGHT - NIGHT

Sara turns around from the bar and walks to the table where Rachel is sitting there bored and waiting on her.

SARA

Pucker up babe! Have fun! Here's your drink.

RACHEL

When you said party, this isn't exactly what I was thinking.

Rachel grabs the drink and slams it like a pro, Sara is caught off guard.

SARA

Holy hell Rach!

RACHEL

You do realize the only reason our law breaking asses got in here is cause you played hello titty with the security, right?

SARA (IRRITATED)

What is your problem? I brought you here to have fun and take your mind off of shit. Instead you're acting like a bitch.

RACHEL

Be my bitch and get me another drink, would ya?

SARA

If I do, will you start enjoying yourself?

RACHEL

I'll think about it.

Sara turns around and walks away mumbling.

SARA

Close e-[frick]ing-nough.

Rachel sits the bored continuously. She is nearly scared to death when she gets a tap on the shoulder. Standing there is a well groomed, handsome man who has the looks ladies would fall for in a heartbeat. MICHAEL, late 20s.

MICHAEL

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.

Rachel sits there in shock and awe just how good looking he is. She tries to pull herself together.

MICHAEL (SMILING)

You have a name?

RACHEL (LETS OUT A GIGGLE)

Yeah, it's Rachel. I'm sorry, I'm just taken back is all.

MICHAEL

It's okay. I get it all the time. It's unfortunate really. All they want is sex from me.

RACHEL

Isn't that the point of coming to bars? Drink, have a good time then bring home a strange to [frick] ya until you're stupid?

MICHAEL

I guess that's the case for most people. I definitely go for the good times but, I also like to meet new women who are striking to me and try to see if I can make something out of it.

Sara comes back with the drink and is shocked to see a man sitting with Rachel. She hands a drink as she smiles and greets Michael.

SARA

Hey there handsome man I regret not ever meeting before.

MICHAEL (LAUGHING)

Hiya! Are you this lovely ladies friend?

Pointing to Rachel as she blushes and giggles.

SARA

Yeah, I know Rachel. She tell you she has a boyfriend? He's the whole reason we're here.

Michael looks over at Rachel who is embarrassed at the moment. Rachel is very much upset with Sara at the moment. But, this always happens in the movies don't it?

MICHAEL

Does he treat you bad?

RACHEL

He treats me like a queen.

MICHAEL

Is he a dick?

RACHEL

Not really.

MICHAEL

Interesting. Good thing I wasn't looking for a relationship or to [frick], right?

RACHEL (SADNESS IN HER EYES)

Right. I should've told you about Tommy. He's recently left as a Marine to go over to Afghanistan. Sara and I are dating him and his best friend, Markus.

MICHAEL (LOOKS AT SARA)

Where is Michael tonight?

SARA

Overseas with Tommy.

MICHAEL

Not to be a dick, you both deserve to have fun, but why are you ladies here tonight? Pigs crawl around these places and both of you should be loyal to your boys.

RACHEL

Hey buddy. Look, we love our men and as you said, we deserve to have fun but who are you to say what we should and shouldn't do?

MICHAEL

Thats why you were flirting with me like some high school teenager?

SARA

What the [frick]!

RACHEL

It was friendly flirting.

SARA

I almost believe it.

MICHAEL

Hey look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ruin your guys' nights. I'm just gonna go.

Michael gets up and leaves the two at the table. Sara is giving her the same look she gives Markus when he [frick]s up. Her period look. Very aggressive, very intense.

RACHEL

What you looking at?

SARA

Tommy is a good guy, why would you do that?

RACHEL

You wanted me to take my mind off of him.

SARA

By attempting to cheat on him?

RACHEL

That's not what I was going to do.

SARA

Then what were you going to do?

Rachel has been caught. You can see it in her eyes.

SARA

Be honest with me Rachel. Would it have been the first time?

RACHEL

I don't want to talk about this, let's just go home.

Sara grabs her arm aggressively as she is clearly agitated.

SARA

Have you already cheated on Tommy?

RACHEL

Yeah, so what? What's it to ya?

SARA

Jesus Christ. Then why are you still with him? Why were you digging through the mail this morning?

RACHEL

He's a good guy. I just don't have the heart to break it off. I was going through the mail cause I was expecting a letter or something from a different guy. I didn't tell you cause I knew you would react this way.

SARA

How long have you been cheating on him for?

RACHEL

Since senior year.

SARA

Jesus. [frick]ing. Christ. I want you to get your shit out of my apartment by tomorrow afternoon.

RACHEL

Why the [frick] are you kicking me out?

SARA

Cause I'm not about to have you living with me and cheat on Tommy some more but in my own apartment. You're going to write Tommy a letter and letting him know you're leaving. He deserves better and you know it.

RACHEL

Whatever.

Rachel storms out of the bar and begins walking home.

FADE OUT:

CUT TO:

EXT: AFGHANISTAN STREETS - DAY

Tommy and Markus are patrolling the streets of Afghanistan. They examine the poor on the streets, mothers in their homes and kids looking for food on the market for their families. They are reminded of people back home.

TOMMY

Hey Markus, ever thought about what it would be like to be one of them? Maybe what it would be like to do something to help?

MARKUS

Not really. Unless it affects me personally, I don't think about it.

TOMMY

You're a real dick, you know that?

MARKUS

Why? Cause I don't want to focus on the lives of strangers? Aliens? Why should I worry about Arabian sand [racial slur]s and how they affect my life? They're never going to harm my family. If they somehow do, you can betcha that I will [frick] them up.

TOMMY

That logic, that thinking is why people are so [frick]ed up Markus. I thought we were overseas, I thought we were over here to do the right thing. A good cause.

MARKUS

We are. We're over here to take out the threat.

Tommy stops dead in his tracks. He looks at the ground, the sand below his feet. The crunching and grinding of his feet against the ground. He's trying to figure out what has gone wrong as Markus looks behind him to find Tommy in this state. He starts walking towards him, curious and concerned.

There is reason in Tommy's head to be worried. Could he be able to save Markus or has he lost his way? Has anger and violence corrupted Markus?

MARKUS

I'm just wanting to protect our families. I don't trust these [racial slur]s, you know?

TOMMY (TENSE)

Stop using that word.

MARKUS (IRRITATED)

The [frick] do you want me to say then?

Tommy looks at him, slowly unraveling. Trying everything in his power not to break.

TOMMY

The whole reason I'm over here in the first place because you told me we were going to do the right thing. You're over here with different motives Markus! I'm trying to figure out what has happened to my best friend! Cause right now, he isn't the man standing before me. What happened to my brother, Markus?!?!

Markus is red hot with anger and begins to walk away, leaving Tommy behind. Tommy stands there with anger and sadness in his eyes. He doesn't know what to do anymore. He can't figure out the puzzle.

CUT TO:

EXT: AFGHANISTAN BASE - DAY

Markus is carring a bag of letters towards the base where soldiers sit in the hot sun, splashing their faces with water. He sits the bag on the ground right outside of the base and begins handing out letters. He then sees a letter for Tommy.

MARKUS

Hey Tommy! You got a letter!

Tommy walks out of the base and is handed the letter.

TOMMY

Any idea who it is from?

MARKUS

No. But, I hope it's something good. Ya know?

Tommy quickly opens the envelope and opens up the paper to find out what it is. As Tommy reads, his face continues to grow more upset. Fighting back the tears as the letter reads.

 Dear Tommy,

The last few years have been great but I feel I must tell you something that I most certainly regret. I'm afraid that this relationship must come to a close. You're a great guy and deserve better than me. At the time of this writing I try to fight back the tears that follow as I love you with all my heart and the actions I have done will cause a great deal of pain to you. Sara is forcing me to do it because I wouldn't have the balls to do it by choice.

I've been cheating on you since half way through Senior year. I should have ended it before then but I didn't have the heart to do it. I couldn't do it. You're the best thing to happen to me or to anyone for that matter. Sara is right, I can't keep doing this to you. I know you wanted to come home to me. It's clear you want to marry me Tommy. But, I can't do that. The pain of the truth is just too great for me to endure at this point, having finally admitting my actions.

I really don't know how to end this letter to be honest with you. I wish I knew what you wanted me to say. I'm sorry I've ever done the things that I did and wish better for you. Hopefully when you come home, you find a woman who recognizes what she has and chases after it. Never letting it go and holding onto it until the end of time. I'm sorry Tommy.

Love, Rachel

Tommy falls to his knees and just starts crying right there in front of everyone. Markus picks up the letter and reads it. Shock in his eyes, he sits on his knees and holds Tommy as he just falls apart.

MARKUS

I'm so sorry bud. I'm so sorry.

INT: SARA AND MARKUS' APARTMENT - DAY - FOUR YEARS LATER

Markus is relaxing, watching the game and eating wings while Sara is seen doing the dishes. A fairly typical and boring day in the household. Then, he comes up with an idea.

MARKUS

Hey hun! Are you still friends with Gwen?

Sara walks into the room, leans against the wall as she dries off her hands. Curiosity is clearly on her face.

SARA

Yeah, we've been talking a lot lately. Still getting over Brandon. Why do you ask?

MARKUS

Let's set her up on a blind date with Tommy.

SARA

I don't know babe. Do you think they'll click together?

MARKUS

Yeah. Gwen is a smart, funny and beautiful woman. Tommy needs an anchor in his life and someone who appreciates him for him and she does for her. They're lost at the moment and I think they'll be a fine couple.

SARA

Yeah but, you know how Tommy is. He's all shy and nervous. I'm not sure how he'll come across with her.

MARKUS

Let's set it up. Hopefully it'll go well. They need that void filled.

SARA

Alright, I'll give her a call. Call Tommy in about five minutes or you'll forget.

MARKUS

I will, I promise.

SARA

I got to talk to you about something later. It's kind of important.

MARKUS

Okay babe.

Markus glances at his phone with Tommy ready to be dialed. He thinks to himself "[frick] it, get it out of the way". He calls Tommy.

TOMMY (O.S)

Hey man, what's up?

MARKUS

I was thinking Tommy. Sara and I are going to set you up on a blind date.

TOMMY

Markus, I appreciate it but, I don't know.

MARKUS

Dude, Rachel dumped you four years ago. We're only home for another week. You need to get out there. We're setting it up for tomorrow night at eight at Lonestar.

TOMMY

Markus, I appreciate it. I just --

MARKUS

No man. You're not backing out of this.

TOMMY

Markus man, Listen to --

MARKUS

Be there.

TOMMY

Alright. I'll be there, I promise.

MARKUS

Alright man. I love you.

TOMMY

I love you too man.

MARKUS

I'll talk to you later.

TOMMY

Alright man, bye.

MARKUS

Bye Tom.

CUT TO:

INT: DINING ROOM - NIGHT

Markus and Sara are eating dinner at a very small table, the shape of a circle. Lasagna is for dinner. Yummy!

SARA

Remember earlier when I said I needed to talk to you about something?

MARKUS

Yeah babe. What's up?

SARA

You should try to get back in touch with your father.

MARKUS

I told you Sara, that relationship is dead.

SARA

That's the thing. He is your father. You need to fix that broken relationship. He's sick, dying. You need to mend that. He needs to be at our wedding.

MARKUS

Okay, I give. I'll talk to him. I'll pay him a visit tomorrow.

SARA

Thank you. I know it's tough for you guys. But, I think it's for best for both of you guys.

MARKUS

Did you get a hold of Gwen?

SARA

Yeah, I did. She was skeptical but, she's game.

MARKUS

Right. Tommy wasn't so sure about it either. He wasn't wanting to but, I made him promise to show up.

SARA

That scares me. I think he'll purposely [frick] it up.

MARKUS

It'll be fine. He just needs to see how beautiful she is and how great she is. Guarantee he'll thank us for it later.

SARA

Do you honestly think so?

MARKUS

I know he will. I've been best friends with him since we were fifteen. I know how he is.

SARA

Alright. Just concerned is all.

MARKUS

I know.

SARA

So, what is it you're doing tomorrow?

MARKUS

Tomorrow I'm visiting my dad and try to make amends.

Sara stands up and grabs both of their plates.

SARA

Damn right you are.

She kisses him on the forehead and walks into the kitchen. You can tell on Markus' face that he isn't sure about this at all.

CUT TO:

EXT: SUBURBS - MARKUS' FATHERS HOME - DAY

Markus walks up to the door and speaks to himself softly. Unsure, he starts knocking on the door. After a couple minutes, he knocks again. The door swings open and a short, old, frail man stands there. Sick as can be. Life isn't giving him much time left.

DAVID

Markus?

MARKUS

Hey dad, mind if I come in. I have to talk to you.

DAVID

I'm not sure if that's the best idea.

MARKUS

I want to be here as much as you want me here but, I told Sara I'd talk to you.

DAVID

Who's Sara?

MARKUS

My fiance? The same girl I've been with since middle school?

DAVID

You're still with her?

MARKUS

Yes dad. Can I come in?

David swings the door open and lets Markus in. Neither one of them clearly are happy about the situation. Their relationship has clearly fallen apart. Broken like a branch off of an old tree.

INT: DAVID'S HOME - DAY

Markus walks in and observes the house and sees that nothing has changed. He walks over towards a stand and sees a picture of he, his mother and father together when he was roughly five years old.

MARKUS

I miss mom, I miss those days where we were a happy family.

DAVID

I miss your mother too, Markus. Why are you here?

Markus hangs his head down, leans against the wall and looks at his father.

MARKUS

Sara and I are getting married Pop. We want you at the wedding. I know we haven't gotten along since mom passed but, your only son is getting married. It wouldn't feel right if you weren't there with everyone else.

DAVID

Your mother passes away, you don't talk to or come visit me for years and now you expect me to show up to your wedding?

MARKUS

It was Sara's suggestion Pop. I wasn't all for it either but she had a point. You should be able to live to see your only son get married.

DAVID

I'm sorry you wasted your gas to come all the way out here.

MARKUS

Jesus christ Pop! What has been with you for the last fifteen or so years? Why is it you stopped giving a shit about me once mom died?

DAVID

Your mom passing tore me up and --

MARKUS

It tore me up too dad! It tore us all up! You're not the only one her death affected god damn it!

David is jaw dropped and begins to walk away. He's fighting back years worth of pain and tears. It's clear as day that in his eyes that he is suffering. He looks outside seeing parents playing with their children as he stands in front of the door. Markus slowly approaches him from behind.

DAVID

You should probably leave, Markus.

MARKUS

I know I was probably not the easiest kid to raise, especially after she died. But, you need to open up. Let someone help you. Maybe -- I don't know, let me help you.

DAVID

Please Markus. Just leave.

Markus walks around him, places an invitation on a table then walks out the door. He is discouraged and disappointed. David continues watching the parents and children as Markus drives away. David looks over and spots the invitation. He is tempted to pick it up but leaves it.

He walks among the house, looking at pictures of the past on the hallway wall. Reminiscing the times where he was happy and not so angry at the world. Sliding down the opposite wall. David sits and starts to breakdown.

@Nick Salinski
Yeah, I'm not going to read this until you give me a pitch.
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 10/28/2014, 3:28 PM
@Alphadog: Essentially it's a script very focused on characters and relationships with themes of friendship and loss. The basic premise is something we've all heard before of war heroes come home and they're haunted by what they've seen and done overseas. Best way I can put it is Brothers meets Blue Valentine. Influences for this script and certain parts of it are: Brothers, Blue Valentine, Warrior, The Judge, Stop Loss, End of Watch, Boy A and People Like Us. I know it seems like a lot but looking at the characters, themes and relationships of those films, it makes sense.

Thank you! :) You have no idea how much it means to me that you said that. @MrNiklander I don't want to say too much but the relationship between Tommy and Markus does lead to something. I was thinking of doing narration but it's a crutch for a first script. I've just been nervous sharing any of my work with other people cause I'm afraid of it being bad or something haha

@MrNikLander: Right, I might use it for a second draft but, I just didn't wanna use that crutch.

@EdgyOutsider I never saw any of those movies so I don't know what you're talking about. Why should I read this. What's special about your idea?
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 10/29/2014, 7:38 PM
@Alphadog: All I can say is that most films about their protagonists in war is about what they deal with when they're overseas. While this excerpt doesn't really focus on them on war too much or the consequences of war. It's about these protagonists and how not only are they affected by the outcome of war but how it affects the relationships they have with loved ones while in one case, they try to save a relationship in their lives. I didn't want to focus on how they're affected during war. I wanted to focus on how they're affected when not out on the front lines.

@EdgyOutsider Okay I'll give it a try tonight.

@EdgyOutsider Okay I read it. It's a weird script. The characters talk in a weird way. It's very crude. There's no clear idea for the script. It moves around being a teen drama in the vein of CW, a war drama and a family drama film. The characters talk about their relationship as if they were writing a film but in a serious way, they talk about politics of war and that part with the father, I don't really like that CW element that cus it's cheesy but in a bad way to me, I'm really sick of family dramas so I hate when people put some tragic backstory in there and the war part doesn't fit in any way with the rest. It's a pastiche of various stuff that aren't placed together in the right way. I don't know what your idea for the script is exactly but I think you should try to find a clear, interesting and unique objective if you don't have one and build the film around it. The biggest thing I want in a unique and engaging concept.
