The film opens on Earth with newspapers and television programs documenting various heroic triumphs of the Green Lantern and briefly other superheroes in other cities and an advertisement for Luthorcorp showing Lex Luthor. Suddenly a robbery is being covered by the news. Hal will only be stopping this petty bank robbery while on earth (No serious threat to the earth in this film) It is revealed that Hal has been away for quite some time training and patrolling with Sinestro and that Carol has been dating his temporary replacement at Ferris Aircraft Air Force Lieutenant Colonel (Steve Trevor). He has been working on a government contract with Carol in Hals absence. Hal arrives and immediately begins to disrupt things between carol and Steve. He raises enough of a doubt in Carols mind that she breaks things off with Steve and decides to try things with Hal again. Things begin to go downhill quickly for the couple. The romance begins to struggle due to various (uncontrollable) unfortunate events that depict Hal as a player. During this time Sinestro is shown becoming increasingly impatient with the Guardians and their secrets. Lanterns are losing their lives and the guardians still have not given an explanation (similar to the first film) Finally Sinestro summons Hal back to OA. (at the worst possible time for his relationship) Right before he leaves, Carol is informed that LtCol Steve Trevor has gone missing somewhere over the Ocean (He is crash landed at Themyscira) and right when she needs Hal the most he cannot be there for her emotionally. Hal heads to OA leaving Carol broken hearted and afraid that Steve is dead. Next we have Sinestro and Hal Jordan patrolling together in search of a fugitive. Sinestro is venting to Hal about the guardians. Sinestro interrogates numerous aliens and Hal becomes alarmed by Sinestros increasingly, extreme levels of violence and aggression. Hal steps in and Sinestro snaps at him. Sinestro apologizes and states he is just passionate about stopping evil forces and that the best way to rid the world of evil is to stamp it out before it can come to fruition. Nonetheless their friendship grows stronger and they eventually catch the fugitive. On their way back to Oa with the prisoner they come across a completely destroyed space fleet with thousands of murdered beings (shock and awe). Upon further investigation there is a fatally wounded lantern who can only express a foreboding warning of “The Hunters come for the guardians” before he passes away. Deciding that they should report this to the guardians (and finally get some answers according to sinestro) they head back to OA with the fugitive and the dead lanterns body (another in what is becoming a large amount of fatalities recently). Next they arrive at the Guardians citadel and The guardians explain to Sinestro, Hal, Kilowogg, and Tomar Re that the Green Lanterns were not the first protectors of the universe. They explain the origin of the Manhunters and the reason why a human has never been a Green Lantern. They had chosen a Human to lead the Manhunters and he tried to lead them in a mutiny, destroying an entire sector (the lost sector) and they were all eventually exiled. The Guardians thought humans couldn’t be trusted. Hal was selected due to sheer necessity and Abin Surs ship crashing on earth. The guardians send the 4 of them off to find the Manhunters and to signal back for reinforcements. As they leave Oa it is shown the Manhunters are already at OA and have been preparing there attack for sometime. A Manhunter receives a command from a hidden robotic voice. “Crush the Lanterns and we will have the guardians” to which the manhunter accepts “Yes GrandMaster” The Manhunters attack OA and a ferocious battle ensues. As the lanterns suffer heavy casualties , Lantern Rings zip through space in search of suitable replacements. The camera follows one rings journey all the way to earth, coming to land in Afghanistan at the feet of a Marine. His name tag reads: Stewart. He is pinned down in a fire fight as the ring hovers in front of him. He reaches to grab it and it slips onto his finger and he is pulled into space. Meanwhile SInestro, Hal, Kilowogg and Tomar Re receive the distress signal and return to OA. Upon arriving they see an almost completely destroyed OA with slain Lanterns everywhere. Sinestro stops Hal from joining the battle stating “ Cant you see this is the Guardians doing!? They deserve this fate. They have brought this on all of us. Let them burn.” Hal doesn’t have time to process this and responds with confusion “This is our duty.” Sinestro leaves as Hal joins the battle.
Next he is Back to Back with Tomar Re while they battle hordes of manhunters, wave after wave repelling each attack. But not without consequence. Kilowogg fights valiantly but is eventually incapacitated. Just when it seems the battle is lost, John Stewart arrives on OA next to Hal Jordan and with his battle experience and ferocity turns the tide of the battle in favor of the lanterns. Just when it seems the Manhunters are retreating, it is revealed that they are actually preparing for their Grandmasters Arrival. When the Grandmaster Arrives it is revealed that he is half human half cyborg.. He offers the Lanterns a chance to leave the battle in order to survive. Hal (self appointed leader at this point) Refuses and rallies the Lanterns for another Battle. The Cyborg is too strong for the majority of Lanterns and defeats them seemingly several at a time. Finally Hal, and John get a string of Hits on the Cyborg and assure each other that nothing could have survived an Onslaught like that. After the smoke and debris clear, The Cyborg is shown being damaged, revealing metallic organs under his skin, but otherwise unscathed. As the Cyborg makes a final grand threat to destroy the Lanterns with no mercy for standing between him and his vengeance SInestro appears wearing his Yellow ring of Fear. He stabs the Cyborg through the back and pulls his head off, sending the remaining pieces floating off through space. He tries again to turn Hal and Kilowogg to his cause, telling them of the power of fear and blaming the guardians for the Lives that were lost in the battle. When they refuse, Sinestro snaps and attacks the battered corps. Hal feels completely betrayed. He ferociously battles back and the two fight individually. After sinestro gains the upper hand he stops his assault and tells the guardians to prepare for war. Their time is at an end. Sinestro flies off alone. The next scene is of the guardians welcoming John stewart and warning Hal that something very bad is coming. He is now responsible for Preparing the Corps for whatever it may be.
In the final scene The Cyborgs Head is seen floating through space. Suddenly it re-attaches itself to its body as cables come out of a shadowy presence and plug into his chest. (The Cables have kryptonian symbols emanating from them) The Grandmaster says “Your army has been gathered and tested master”
“Your test was sufficient”
CREDITS.
In a post credits scene Carol is seen crying alone on the beach (incidentally where Hal got his ring). The camera slowly pans out and at the last second a small purple meteor hits where Carol is (but its out of the frame)

I understand this isn’t exactly “true to the comics” but it gives you the edgy betrayal of a best friend.. There will also be Easter eggs while he is on earth (Luthorcorp commercial). A brief news Cast after his heroics are highlighted.. involving superman in Metropolis and a string of crimes in Central City. This story also sets you up for the Sinestro Corps War and an opening battle with Star Sapphire. Big Picture wise, Steve Trevor, The Grandmaster (Future Cyborg Superman) and the Shadowy figure (Brainiac) tie it to the overall continuity.
