Christopher Nolan, hugely successful director of Memento, Inception, The Prestige, Insomnia and of cause his two Batman films. He's a marmite director, you either think he is the best thing on sliced bread or you think he is a disgusting brown topping best thrown in the bin. One thing all comic book fams can agree on though is that he is a tad stubborn. His reluctance to allow "his" Batman branch out to allow for the existence of JLA or even Superman is a famous debate, is he right or not? etc.
Though this isn't a Chris Nolan editorial, one thing common to a lot of Nolan films is the vision and the re-use of actors. More about the vision later. Mr Nolan has re-used actors many a time, I'm losing count of the number of times that Michael Caine plays a lovable rouge mentor character, not that there is much wrong with it. So I got thinking who is gunna return for the Superman film which he is producing as no doubt he will have huge influence along with the director on who plays it.
Right before you all die of boredom, I must mention quickly the vision. He has admitted there is a twist to the mythology this time and I think what a lot of fancasts have made the mistake of is to cast for Superman Returns but done properly rather than adding anything new to the mix. I personally think like Batman was based on Roosevelt, Supes will be based on a historical outsider figure who became a power in his new land, Arnold Schwarzenegger for example ;)
Right firstly this keeps batman continuity ie Christian Bale won't be in this fancast because I still hope for at least a Batman/Superman Film.
So for Superman (Kal-El,Clark Kent) -Hugh Jackman
Yes you will hate this pick. He is too old , he is australian, too short and also wolverine BUT this is a nolan fancast and his character in the Prestige along with Bale and my Lois Lane pick in terms of actor dynamics showed he has the muscle and the charisma to pull off a leader of men without being over the top in his performance. Plus I loved the SNL skit with Will Ferell
Lois Lane-Rebecca Hall
Great dynamic with Jackman in The Prestige and was nominated for Golden Globe for Vicky Christina Barcelona. Not bad looking and definitely is talented at playing characters rooted in reality in conflict when confronted with the unexplainable.
Jor-El- Al Pacino
In the orginal it was an Oscar nominated actor who mumbled and it should be no different for the reboot in my mind. Great actor with distinctive voice and star power.
Perry White- Robin Williams
Though you would never believe it can deliver dramatic roles with subtle, yes subtle amount of comedy. This comedian and actor would beg for a role in Batman 3 but i think its a safer bet here on the Metropolis side
Ma and Pa Kent -Maura Tierney and Tom Berenger
A great actress who never really shook off ER but then again who wouldn't be satisfied with your lot in after that and a former action star who again strangely can act when the script doesn't just say Kill guy with machine gun and say cool line. Both just have that parental feeling about them that would translate well to screen
Yes unfortunately I couldn't decide (or find) Jimmy Olsen or Supergirl so I would love suggestions on those please from Nolan films if possible otherwise put the best possible guys in.
Villains
Brainiac- Joe Pantoliano
As seen in Memento can play villainious characters with extreme subtlety when needed and Nolan has said himself he was amazed at the subtlety of his performance. I think that Supes really has lacked any intelligence in his villains in previous films without also resorting to basically twirling the moustache villainly (campy).
Metallo- Callum Keith Rennie
A bit of a tv actor with untapped potential. John Corben like Harvey Dent is best when dealth with as a tragic character (obviously different contexts) so the audience need to feel sorry for this guy who is being manipulated and stuffed with alien bits of moonrock purely to remove Superman. Though my real favourite would Mark Pellegrino I must confess.
Lex Luthor - Leo DiCaprio
Again you read and instantly dislike but actually his suprisingly mature portrayal of Howard Hughes as well as his portrayal in Inception whilst of cause being a King of Holywood, I think will translate really well to a Lex that is not camp and is truly an evil man masquerading as the People's Champion. Quick wit, bending of the rules and a true opposite to Superman. We want more motive and character development as to why rather than he hate Superman because he does. I'm maybe Richard Nixon as influence.
Though these are the best I could make from previous Nolan films so remember these aren't who I would have but there a few that could possibly be great and possible. Remember suggestions for Olsen or Supergirl please!
Right please do comment, sorry for the length and its my first article so be as mean as you like:)
