Spectacular Spider-man 4
It’s the start of the summer holidays and Peter has applied for an internship at Dr Connors research lab. His teacher and Connors are friends and his teacher tells Peter he’s a shoe in for the spot. Gwen meanwhile is busy stacking shelves for the summer at a store.
As Peter swings by the Bugle, J.J is raving about how his astronaut hero is coming back from an exploration to the moon. The ship is due to land in a few days and he wants photos of the landing so Peter is told it has to be him.
On his way home he comes across Shocker, mugging an old lady. Disgusted and annoyed at Shockers knack of staying out of jail, he quickly defuses the situation and rings SHEILD. After a brief voice cameo from Nick Fury, he tells him to come pick Shocker up and take him into SHEILD custody as he keeps getting out of normal prison and provides a threat to people. Fury makes a comment on home SHEILD base is getting pretty full and Peter just says he’s just doing his job and he has the ‘best’ villains.
Peter and Gwen meet at her house and discuss the day with each other. Gwen is annoyed that Peter gets to do what he wants to do over the summer and she’s stuck in a store. Peter thinks it’s his fault and invites her to the landing of J.J Jr’s shuttle landing.
Somewhere in the city, Otto Octavious is wandering about. A few weeks ago he was in an accident after being beaten up by Sandman and he ingested a vial of Oz. This particular vial had been altered by Otto as he changed it to work out most of the kinks Osborn himself had with it. It gave him extra strength and an even large mental capacity that has allowed him to use his arms with precision. Unfortunately Oz has still retained his mind-f**king abilities and made Otto hear voices, voices he attaches to each of his four new limbs.
He’s unsure what to do as he wanders the city; he is able to hide his arms under his clothes and doesn’t really have any beef with anyone as he’s in love with his new arms, sees the situation as his own destiny and feels powerful than he used to be. As a doctor and scientist he visits several labs and other science-y areas…
Peter gets his call from Dr Connors, asking him to come down tomorrow to the lab. Peter is gleeful
In the morning, Peter is being shown around the Connors lab by the man himself. He meets Connors wife and son as well as his large collection of reptiles and collections. He tells Peter his biggest work is on replicating a lizards ability to regenerate its limbs for humans so he can revolutionize the world for people suffering loss of limb, just like himself. But he keeps optimistic about his predicament, saying he’s getting close but a long way off from achieving his dream.
Here Peter’s spider-sense goes off and as somebody grabs him from behind he flips him over and sends him crashing to the ground. Suddenly surprised and ecstatic he’s pleased to see Eddie Brock, his childhood friend he hadn’t seen since he was 8. Eddie is a football player turned science geek and is assisting Connors and his wife at the lab. He remarks on Peter’s nice moves. The two of them catch up in a café and chat about their lives since they last saw each other at their parent’s funeral.
At home that night, Peter tells Aunt May about Eddie and she’s happy for Peter to finally meet an old friend, remarking that Eddie was such a sweet boy.
A few days later and Peter is waiting with Bugle reporter Ben Urich and Gwen at the runway where J.J Jr’s shuttle is to land. As it lands and Peter takes photos they both see the shuttle has taken some damage but nothing life-threatening to the astronauts. Suddenly everyone goes wild as a black goo is spotted on the hull of the ship. Scientists go crazy and the news reports say it is organic and moving, alien life. The goo is careful removed and put into containment. Urich and Peter both grabbed by J.J telling them if they didn’t get photos and write up a good report they are both fired.
As Peter returns home with Gwen holding onto him for a lift they come across a buglulary of a bank. Peter leaves Gwen safely on the roof to watch and dives into action, totally unprepared for the man who smacks him away with a giant hammer made of sand.
Flint Marko is a petty crook who dreams of living the big time in a penthouse with a pool and hot babes but has always be caught and put into prison. The last time he got out he went to work as one of Kingpins thugs and volunteered to be genetically experimented on as he was promised the abilities of Captain America. Instead he has been turned in sand and is able to reform his body into a number of possibilities as well as add more sand to his mass to become larger. The first few months of these abilities he was unable to walk or talk, reduced to a pile of sand on his room floor as he gave it more and more thought, he was able to take his original form and learn to control his mass and density. He broke away from his room, causing the accident that created Doctor Octopus, and escaped to get rich. He’s been laying low till now, learning to use his powers and his favourite move is called “Hammer hands”
Spidey is lost for words for a few moments as all he can do is dodge Sandmans attacks as the fight moves out into the street. Peter manages to destroy his hammer hands but they just reform moments later and Sandman gets larger. He moves off down the street and pours into the gutter, but loses his money. You hear this pissed off groan. Peter returns to Gwen and takes her home, citing the weirdness of his supervillains.
The next day, Peter is reading the paper at Connors lab as he cleans several lab utensils. The front page is dominated by the shuttle and the new alien life discovered and J.J has made sure his son gets the glory, while the news of a new supervillain is reduced to page 12.
Dr Connors comes out from his main office, ecstatic and calls over his wife, Peter and Eddie. He tells them the government is giving them the alien to run tests on and experiments.
The Alien arrives later that day and Peter takes several photos of it. Dr Connors notices and tells Peter he can’t tell anyone as its top secret. Peter understands and decides to keep the pictures himself for personal study as he won’t be allowed to see the actual alien a lot. The alien starts moving in its glass case and is drawn to Peter, sensing his power. Peter is creeped out by it and leaves.
Later that day Peter is at the bugle and gets a call from Harry, hoping he can fix their friendship, Peter arranges to meet him at the movies tomorrow and Harry agrees. J.J calls Peter in and wants new pictures of Spider-man and his ‘partner in crime’ Sandman. Peter says he doesn’t have any new pictures yet but accidently hands over his camera to J.J for him to see, forgetting the pictures of the alien are on there. J.J finds them and decides to run with the story that Dr Connors has the alien for study. It’s front page news. Peter protests but J.J actually praises him for once and offers an exclusive freelance position at the bugle as well as his current web-designer job. Peter reluctantly accepts and hopes Connors will understand.
The next day Dr Connors is upset with him as he shows up at the lab. Peter tries to explain and Eddie is angry, flashing the Bugle in his face. He’s about to hit Peter when Connors stops him. He tells Peter he can’t trust him and there is no longer a spot at the lab for him. Upset, Peter swings home and tells Aunt May. She offers to call Connors and talk to him but Peter refuses, telling her he doesn’t need her to fight his battles.
Doctor Octopus is reading the Bugle and is intrigued so much by the alien he decides to steal it and study it himself. He heads to the Connors lab and breaks in. However before he is able to find it, it’s gone. Octopus is then webbed in the face by Spider-man and they begin their first battle. Spidey sees the alien is no longer there and believes Octopus has it. Peter webs up his camera and gets photos of his fight with Doc Ock. After the police arrive due to the alarm sounding, Spidey is tossed out through the doors and into a police car. Doctor Octopus tries to escape by Spidey follows and they start a fight/chase through the streets. Outside the movie theatre, Harry is waiting for Peter and is about to leave when he is grabbed by Doctor Octopus, along with 2 other people. Ock promises they’ll die if Spider-man follows. Spider-man quickly web yanks two of them away from Ocks grip and then tries to save Harry. Ock scales a building and throws Harry as far as he can into the air. Choosing to go after Harry and catch him before he hits the ground, Ock escapes.
Harry is petrified and Spidey takes him to hospital.
Next day Peter takes his Spidey/Ock pictures to the Bugle who informs him the two super-powered people have stolen the alien. Peter recalls not seeing the alien at all in Ocks possession and comes to the conclusion that it was stolen before.
Meanwhile Connors is getting it in the neck from government officials stating it was his responsibility to keep it safe and secret and he blew it. They shut down his lab and both Connors cry in each other’s arms. Eddie, out of a job and seeing his friends lose their livelihoods angers him even more with Peter and with Spider-man. Peter was taking photos as he watched them steal it (as well as revealed the location of the alien to the public) and at Spider-man FOR stealing it.
Eddie stops by Peter’s house and punches Peter, telling him he hates him for changing and he misses his best friend who was always loyal to his friends and never stabbed them in the backs. He storms off.
Peter goes off for a swing to clear his head. He’s feeling lost. Harry’s therapy has collapsed and now he’s recalling the memories of his father and the goblin, Eddie hates him, Connors lab has been shut down because of him and he’s let two of his newest supervillains escape.
Suddenly he comes across Sandman again and they start fighting again. Sandman was yet again breaking into a bank in an effort to get rich. The fight is larger and longer than their first and Peter is finally able to foil him by dropping him into a swimming pool. Having avoided water since becoming sandman, Marko is unable to reform, not used to wet sand and starts to panic, believing it to be his demise.
With Sandman preoccupied, Peter calls SHEILD and tells them about Sandman. Before he can leave however he comes across Doc Ock. Ock looks more insane than last time and tells Spider-man he has been looking him up and tailing him since their last meeting. As they fight, Ock informs him that he’s also been able to a study his moves and eventually pins him down after a tiring fight. For the first time, Peters mask is ripped off in battle and Ock sees his face. He’s baffled that Spider-man is a teenager and shrugs. He tells him he should never have interfered with his plans to steal and study the unique alien and prepares to rip him to shreds with his metal claws.
Just then SHEILD arrives and distracts Ock, giving Spidey time to smack him about and rip off one of his arms. SHEILD manage to contain him and the fight is over. Peter quickly puts on his mask and he meets Agent Coulson for the first time. Coulson remarks that their headquarters are almost full now what with the addition of two more supervillains and Peter just says “I’m doing my job.”
Peter returns home, thinking about the nights events. He feels confident his Spider-man life is the right thing to do but reflects that Ock saw his face. If he ever escaped it’s be easier to find him. And Ock had him beat, if SHEILD hadn’t shown up, he’d be dead right now. Peter shudders and goes to bed.
At SHEILD headquarters Doc Ock, now with arms removed is locked into his cell as he sobs, missing his arms. Sandman is placed in an airtight cell beside him and the get to know the other inmates, notably Rhino, Electro and Scorpion. They start to chat as Otto stops sobbing and grins like the madman he is, getting an idea.
The final scene is a glass case in the middle of a dark room. The alien is inside it moving around and a woman with long white hair and full latex catsuit on moves around the glass looking at it. She looks at the several issues of the daily Bugle, notably the pictures of Spider-man. “That’s my man” she says.
Notes…..
Sandman is more like his 616 version as well as SSM t.v series as he’s more in it for a big score not to actually kill anyone. His defeat comes only due to his inexperience with water and his initial fear he was dying. But now he knows he can reform and will be harder to defeat
Ock was more interested in a new scientific discovery and wanted to study it himself and develops a personal vendetta with Spidey due to him being the reason he hasn’t got it and is now sitting in prison. Now he knows Spidey is a kid he’s more pissed off.
I’ve laid more origins into this for the likes of Venom and Lizard and even Hobgoblin…..Also introduced Black Cat at the end.
SHEILD obviously had more to do with the defeat of Octopus and many wouldn’t like but there’s a reason for this….
So yes…..Spectacular Spider-man 5 is up next……and introducing for the first time in cinema….the Sinister 6….or is it 7? Need to read the next one to find out.
