Prof.Elder(Mole Man)'moloids' need real science to make his creation believable.The concept should be founded upon symbiotic colonial societies in nature. An example of this would be coral polyps. They function as a colony of individuals yet are bound together as one seeming organic mass. Different species of coral create different 'exoskeleton' structures which give it it's distinct appearance. Some look like fans, Elk horns or human brains.Each polyp is connected to each other by tissue (coenosarc)and thus are joined. Elder uses mutated mold cells, combined with transgenic science, which is combining DNA from two different sources, and then implanting the new molecule into and organism for the desired effect, and controlled radiation. He splices his DNA with mold DNA to combine a hybrid human/mold entity, and combined with measured radiation creates a transgenic mutation. The 'moloids' grow as a colony(like coral)taking a humanoid shape( from Elder's DNA) as an 'exoskeleton'. He experiments with different mold strains which grow into distinct 'moloid' , some to gigantic proportions!
Meanwhile the Baxter Bldg. is making final preparations for their shuttle flight in a week. As the days pass, the Defense Dept. watches closely investing in the hope that this mission will bear some applicable fruit the military might benefit from.
Launch day! The flight crew, scientist and equipment are in Cape Canaveral and the shuttle on the launch pad. Reed ,Johnny ,Sue ,Ben (piloting the shuttle),his crew and three other young volunteers for the biophysical study are aboard.
Mission control starts the countdown as Reed squeezes Sue's hand tightly and Johnny rolls his eyes.
Lift -off!
The shuttle leaves Earths orbit and begins the approach to rendezvous with the Space Station. They successfully dock and disembark.
Reed meets Victor for the first time, receiving a chilly handshake.
