The Manhunter - Movie Pitch

An idea I pitched to Warner Bros. back in July of 2012

So back in July 2012 I had an idea for a Martian Manhunter movie that I pitched to Warner Bros. They weren't taking on any DC pitches so it just sat on my computer. However, I'm thinking of going ahead and writing the screenplay and releasing it on fanfic websites, to show some of the ideas I had for Martian Manhunter.

The logline was:
A visitor from a highly advanced civilization on Mars, tries to find his place on Earth while being hunted by his brother for a device that could destroy the galaxy.

The pitch was as follows:
Recently I developed an idea for a movie representation of the DC Character "Martian Manhunter." The idea involves grounding the character while interpreting him in a modern context and developing him in such a way that leaves room for a Justice League movie tie-in.

J'onn J'onzz is a police enforcer (Manhunter) on his home planet, Mars. All Manhunters are given suits which grant them superhuman abilities and they are all born with a 'sixth sense' allowing them to telepathically communicate with other organisms; except J'onn's brother, Malefic, who is an ex-Manhunter and terrorist.

J'onn's latest encounter with said brother comes when Malefic is searching for a highly deadly device in J'onn's possession; a telepathic virus which exploits Martians' vulnerability to fire, which will eventually eradicate their entire population. Before J'onn can be infected, he finds shelter inside a space shuttle which happens to bring him to Earth. Consequentially, he meets a scientist who promises to help him return to Mars and J'onn assumes a human form. Seeing the injustices of the world, he decides to make the most of his time on Earth and help others as much as he can by becoming a local police detective. He doesn't realize that his brother is coming to find him, releasing Hell on Earth and giving rise to a new villain that seeks to kill the Manhunter.

Nice! But can't Manhunters fly? Why can't he just fly back to Mars?

Martian Manhunter is one of the few characters I wouldn't like carrying on a solo movie. I think he works best as a Nick Fury type character, bringing together the JLA.

Why wouldn't that be used.

I think that Benedict Cumberbatch should play Martian Manhunter. He has that kind of alien face and voice and he already has motion-cap experience withThe Hobbit.

@eaglefan512 Thanks :) Yeah, I believe there's so much that could be done with him as a character in a standalone movie. He has an emotional depth that will be pretty hard to cover in a JL movie with the screen time they'd probably give him.

@MrCBM56 That is certainly true. I believe that in the comic version of his origins he was brought in from a different time era so I could go that way, or maybe inhibit that ability to an innate fear that could be used as a theme of the movie and maybe relate to the fear of fire somehow. But I'll definitely develop that before I undertake the first draft.

@GuardianAngel Yeah, I can definitely see that as a great way to introduce Martian Manhunter. Although I think that he has an emotional depth that could be explored before a JL movie so that the audience could relate to him more

@NovaCorpsFan Yeah, I would've loved being able to develop a script and show it to them before I got an answer but apparently they weren't accepting any DC related pitches :(

I also have an idea for an Aquaman movie which I'm thinking of developing further and would love to develop a script for the Question.

You could have it state he's not use to Earths gravity yet.

Interesting pitch. I think it would be cool if it where to be adapted into a film.
