Michael Fassbender Says We Can Expect A Different Sounding Magneto In X-MEN: DOFP

In a revelation which is sure to annoy those already frustrated with the X-Men movies' fractured continuity, Fassbender tells Empire that in this movie he will sound much more like a younger Ian McKellen -- something he wishes he'd done in X-Men: First Class.

Michael Fassbender's increasingly Irish sounding accent in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class has been the subject of a lot of debate. He begins the movie with a fairly neutral, but definitely leaning towards British sounding accent, and by the time the final showdown on the beach is underway he sounds as if he's just stepped out of my local pub! Well it seems that we can expect yet another variation in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days Of Future Past, because Fassbender reveals to Empire that he's "changed his accent" once again to better portray a younger version of Ian McKellen's Magneto, who also appears in the movie.

"I hope it's not too much of a weird switch, but in the first one it was a concern for me..and I actually kind of wish I did this [accent] the first time. Because at the beginning I was studying McKellen and doing that cadence...But Matthew kind of liked my accent and my rhythms...But on this one I listened to McKellen constantly. I had him on my iPhone all the time."

Fassbender again says that he regrets not going that route initially, and that he hopes it won't be "too sharp a leap" from what he'd done before in First Class. Guess we'll find out next year! Do you guys think this was a good idea since both actors will be appearing in the movie..or should he have stuck with the Irish brogue for continuity's sake?

Seriously? That's odd..I can tell the difference between all of the American accent variations.

I didn't mind his accent sounding a bit different than McKellen's...besides,Magneto does know a lot of languages and their different accents so him not sounding like his older self matches the profile of someone with those attributes any way.

It will b ok....relax. Remember Storm had an accent too....just sit back and enjoy the ride. If any movie franchise plays out like a coMic series its the xmen. Continuity is always an issue. Nothing new. Why do you think we're going back in time in tHe first place. Ha ha.

The fabric and the color of his suit looks neat.

I really hope Hot Toys will make a figure of this guy with Fassbender Headsculpt. Sold out day one.

Concerning the topic, Fassbender had some sort of great accent in Inglorious Bastard so I'm not worry.

Well I guess it has been 10 years between movies..more than enough time to pick up an accent depending on where's he's been hanging his helmet.

PantherX - we don't post the poll results anymore, but it was Cap 2..by a large majority!

Really??? Did people complain about his accent? What about Xavier too then? People can sound different as they get older anyway so what's the big deal.

If he's also talking about speech patterns then that's cool but accent should not be that big of a concern.

It takes place in the 70's. NO ONE had good looking hair in the 70's. This holds especially true for the people that THOUGHT they had good looking hair. The Cliff Richards-es and Donnie Osmomds of the world fall into that category.

@RorMachine

If it makes you feel any better, I can hear a definite difference between Irish, Scottish, certain regions of England, Welsh, etc. It may not be as immediate as someone from the area, but I've never mistaken Irish for English.

I think its smart, I always wondered why he didn't try to sound more like McKellen in the first one. Can't wait to hear what it sounds like!

LOL Magneto did not sound Scottish towards the end of First Class, he sounded distinctly Irish as his real accent kept slipping out.

You cannot mistake an Irish accent for an English one, though some of those grating northern accents sometimes sound like broken Welsh, ugh cant stand northerners.

I like that they're gonna have him sound like Mckellen in this one.

How can you not tell the difference. Its like comparing a South Boston accent to a New Yorker from Brooklyn.

I've never even noticed the slightest accent in First Class. Might be because English is not my first language.

Hey Mike, try a Quebecer accent next time !
TheRedSkull
TheRedSkull - 11/2/2013, 1:34 PM
Well I heard some Irish coming through in First Class towards the end but it didn't deter from the character at all in that movie.

If it's done well and it shows Magneto's progression into becoming Ian's one, then I'm happy. It won't ruin continuity for me.

Faszbender was amazing as Magneto imo and I can def imagine him as a younger Ian Mckellen... He looks like a young Ian imo... I think the scenes between Fassbender and Hugh will be amazing, and its be cool if we could get a scene between Patrick Stewart and Fassvender, basically trying to convince him that they are still allies in the future
