The Fantastic 4.  The movie you want to see from the studio you don’t want to see it from....

Back in 2008 after being amazed by movies like Iron Man and The Dark Knight, I could not wait to watch more movies that took comic books seriously.  I had all of these ideas in my head for a more realistic take on my favorite characters.

I couldn’t wait for Iron Man 2, because I felt that the movie would delve even further into the science and experiments behind Iron Man and his suits.  I was wrong.

A Spider-Man reboot was announced which would have a more serious take on the character and would have Peter Parker performing experiments in his room, creating web shooters, and displaying his genius.  That didn’t turn out very well and they focused more on Peter’s relationships than his genius.

Now, in 2015, we are getting the Fantastic 4, a movie taking inspiration from the Utimate Fantastic 4.  A movie that from the looks of the trailer is not only taking the material seriously, but is treating the audience as intellectuals and allowing them to fully understand the universe and science behind the movie.

I think for most people, there are 3 main problems that people have with this movie.

1.  You do not know the actors that have been cast.  This is an incredibly talented cast and an incredibly talented director in Josh Trank.

Miles Teller - Please watch Whiplash.  It is an amazing movie and Teller’s performance went far beyond my expectations.

Kate Mara - Watch House of Cards.  She is an amazing actress and I’m looking forward to seeing her take on Sue Storm.

Jamie Bell - I’ll admit, this was an odd choice but he is a very talented actor and I’m sure he can hold his own.  His role in “Man On A Ledge” is actually similar to Ben Grimm and his dynamic with Reed is similar to his dynamic with Sam Worthington’s character in that movie as well.  It also looks like they will make Grimm a baseball player, instead of a football player in the movie’s interpretation, which actually fits Bell’s build better.

Michael B. Jordan - He will own as Johnny Storm.  The guy has been cast by Stallone as Apollo Creed’s son.  That is all the evidence I need.  Apollo Creed was basically a hollywood take on Ali, so if Stallone believes that Jordan can play Ali, then Jordan can definitely play Johnny Storm.  Also, read the Ultimate Fantastic 4 and you’ll see how the casting fits even better.  Plus, he looked great in the trailer.

Toby Kebbell - Awesome casting call here.  Nothing more to say.  I think he will own as Doom.

2.  You have never read Ultimate Fantastic 4

Aside from all of the obvious influences on the story....  If you wonder why anyone would pick Doom to be a hacker, look no further....

3.  You don't like the tone and you want the Fantastic 4 back at Marvel because no matter how good this movie is, there is no way it can compare to the Fantastic 4 in the MCU or Marvel’s take on their first family.

To this, I totally agree, but it’s not happening.  I've decided to enjoy what Fox is doing and hopefully we can see Fantastic 4 in the MCU eventually.  Maybe in Phase 8 or something….

Anyway, thanks for reading….  Feel free to vent and let me know what you think in the comments....

@Jollem

That's also a "Nolanite/DC" thing...as evidenced by a few of the brethren...

@DrKinsolving

Great article bud. Good read. Oh, but Jordan is playing Apollo's GRANDSON in the new movie.

Love the Man on a Ledge comparison. I actually really enjoyed that movie. It reminded me of Phone Booth, but replacing Forrest Whitaker eye with sexy Elizabeth Banks. Bell is a terrific actor. And Kebbell...you're right...nothing more to say...the guy is phenomenal.

The only thing I disagree with is the tone thing. I'm on @Batmaniac's side with that one. The tone is less important that capturing the spirit of the characters, and the theme of family. The mature sci-fi tone more than fits, and it'll be a nice escape from the memory of the original movies.

Thumbed.

If Marvel made the exact same movie with the same cast, director, writer etc. Everyone on this site would be blowing their loads left, right and centre.

@MercwithMouth

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

I actually went back and read some of the first Ultimate FF issues and I'm leaning toward agreeing now, the sic-fi/serious tone definitely fits, it's not synonymous w/ the FF, but it will translate really well on the big screen. Plus, Fox has tried the more campy version already, and honestly, if they were going to go that route, the FF would be better off in the MCU.

After reading through Ultimate FF again, I'm really looking forward to this movie

The trailer does look pretty generic though. Nothing about it says "This is The Fantastic Four". I don't see why they even need the rights to the FF to make this movie.

@NitPicker

That's not really true, the trailer actually screams Ultimate Fantastic 4.

I've never read Ultimate FF. I don't know anything about Ultimate FF. After watching the trailer I still don't know anything about Ultimate FF or the movie.

@0megaDaGod

I hear you man, I've actually wondered why there can't just be 2 cinematic Fantastic Fours (other than the rights obviously), MCU Fantastic 4, and Fox Ultimate Fantastic 4. Best of both worlds....

But, at the end of the day, this is the movie we're getting, I hope it holds up and really shows why Reed is a genius, and tries to explain the science. I think the action will be cool too, definitely looking forward to it.

But, yeah, if I had a choice of having this film or having The Fantastic 4 in all their glory in the MCU, I would definitely choose the MCU.

What is wrong with waiting and seeing? @0mega you haven't seen the movie so how in the world can you say the movie is poorly cast? That makes no sense.

I'm totally behind this movie and going to see it first thing it comes out

We don't know if marvel would make a better FF. All we know is fox is making it and they've made some really good X-men movies in the past( they made bad ones but marvel also made bad movies). John Campea said it best " [we] have to accept the fact that no matter how good the trailer is people are going to say it is bad no matter what". People like @0mega or whoever else has been shitting on the movie since day one WANTS the movie to be bad. I can say without a doubt that this is how marvel studio purist think of FF " It needs to suck so the rights can revert" and/or " the movie is going to suck because it's not made by marvel". And before you go and start calling me a Nolanite or whatever the [frick] you guys call people who like fox movies AND MCU films, I loved Phase 2 and I thought GOTG and TWS were AMAZING; however, I happened to think DOFP was better. Does that take away my enjoyment of the MCU films? No it doesn't. I'm not a [frick]ing crazy weirdo who judges a movie before it comes out because of who it's made by( fox). Now who directs it and who stars in it is completely different. If trank and the cast were not in the movie in would be singing a completely different tone right now. That's why I used to skeptical of a lot of phase 2 films. But marvel proved me wrong this year which is why I anticipate ant-man. The fact of the matter is there are people on this site who live and breath to just shit on anything made by anyone that is not marvel studios related. There people who have genuine concerns and that fine. But after years on this site it's obvious who thinks " the movie doesn't look interesting, they aren't wearing classic suits" is basing their opinion on pre-determined bias. I agree with @0mega when he says " marvel would never make this movie" he is right they wouldn't. That's why I'm glad it's at fox because I love the tone and I love the serious feel to it. That is exactly why I'm glad it's at fox because I know fox makes these types of movies and marvel doesn't. I have come to terms with the fact that fox and marvel make marvel movies but fox makes the more " mature" TDKesque CBMs and Marvel makes the comic book and whimsical movies.

Put marvel studios in front of the movie and everyone on here says " wow marvel is changing the game they are so creative and take risks." Or " this is going to be awesome the FF were always meant to be Sci-Fi heroes". At it's base this proves people don't care about quality they care about if marvel made it or not which is irrelevant.

@0mega they're actors. You can't possibly know if they are " right" for the roles or not without seeing them in the film. You can say " miles teller can't play a genius" well I bet you were singing the same tune before whiplash. Teller was getting serious oscar buzz around his performance in that movie so.... And along with that from the trailer he look a lot like a young prodigy, but that's just looks.

If marvel studios made a movie that looked like this I would be jumping for joy aswell. It doesn't matter who makes it, as long as trank is on board.

Have you seen "Whiplash"? I'm a musician and I have so much more respect for Teller now, it's actually one of the reasons I'm looking forward to seeing him in the FF. He owned his role in "Whiplash"

Watch this. John Campea makes perfect sense here it puts everything into perspective and speaks on a problem that has gone rampant on this site lol

I guess, not a big change though. And, Omega is talking about things he hated about it, so it's subjective. I feel like your following his comments too closely and overthinking man....
