FANTASTIC FOUR: Matt Shakman Talks Replacing Jon Watts; Confirms WANDAVISION Writer Has Joined Reboot

Unfortunately, even after months of seemingly endless rumours, we won't get any Fantastic Four casting news until the SAG-AFTRA strike ends. However, doing the rounds to promote Apple TV+'s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, director Matt Shakman was able to share a few minor updates while speaking to The Playlist

Asked what the latest is on the casting process, the filmmaker promised that there "[will] be an announcement at some point," adding, "I’m thrilled that people are as passionate about these characters as I am. The fact that there is so much debate, I love it. I have been thinking about who should play these characters before I had the job to direct the movie, and I understand why everybody would be thinking in the same way."

"Chemistry is super important...It’s Marvel’s first family. I have to get it right. I have to get that chemistry right," he continued. "[The announcement is] not going to be immediately when the SAG strike has resolved, but we’ll be able to share some news at some point. And I hope people are as excited about this cast as I am."

Later revealing Fantastic Four was the only project he met with Marvel Studios to discuss after working on WandaVision, Shakman shared his thoughts on replacing Spider-Man: No Way Home helmer Jon Watts as the movie's director.

"I love that comic. I certainly let them know that I love that comic. I think Jon Watts was on it for a while, and he would have done a fantastic job, but he moved on, and I was thrilled that I was able to jump into the director’s chair on it and take his place."

"I mean, we’ve been on our process consistently. I’ve been on the project for a little over a year and working away hard at it the way we’d work on any film at Marvel...starting with, you know, what is the story we want to tell? What is the theme of the story? Why are we telling this story? And just developing then the best possible version of that story, and how do we want to bring these characters to life?"

Understandably refusing to reveal whether he's turned to any specific comic books for inspiration, Shakman confirmed he's worked with both Avatar: The Way of Water co-writer Josh Friedman and WandaVision's Cam Squires on a draft of Fantastic Four's screenplay.

This is the first time the latter's name has been tied to the reboot and we'd guess work has continued in earnest with the WGA strike now over.

Adam Driver, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Matt Smith are rumoured to be in the running to play Reed Richards, while Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn are supposedly a lock for Sue Storm and Johnny Storm respectively. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, meanwhile, may be Ben Grimm. Nothing has been confirmed, though, so we'll keep you updated.

Fantastic Four is set to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.

They'll announce at D23 or that stupid Disney+ event in November, one or the other

@bobevanz -
I would not be surprised if the film is delayed, part of the process of everything being pushed back - resulting in filming in late 2024 with the announcement of casting mid 2024 and the trailer in November 2024 for a release in May 2025

@Scarilian - they need to delay it and actually finish the cgi on ONE project lol

@Scarilian - What do you mean???... F4 is already slated for a 2025 release. Technically, not another delay.

Nice to finally have someone who likes Fantastic Four directing a Fantastic Four movie.

Yay, the writer from a poorly written Disney+ show that the writers of the films ignored :L

@Scarilian - Wandavision was written excellent.

@Comicmoviejunki - Wanda had in some areas but it dropped the ball, still better than the rest of the trash shows. Werewolf by night is the only good thing that's come from the TV side and that wasn't even a show.

@Comicmoviejunki - yes, it's very good writing to make the hero someone who enslaved an entire town and the villains the characters trying to stop her (with no nuance about morality).

@Scarilian - Wandavision wasn't perfect but it was very creative. I thought it was written very well actually.

@MosquitoFarmer -

We'll see if Fant5tic is good, but considering we've had four prior Fantastic Four films and all have sucked to varying extents and they've picked the writer from WandaVision who was incapable of handling a family dynamic...

This should be a good boost to Jodie Comer's career.

This guy has a bunch of tv directing credits and has only directed one feature film 9 years ago which got bad reviews and flopped.

I was hoping to one day see a semi-accurate FF movie with the optimistic tone of the comics and all the cool cosmic stuff like Galactus, the Surfer, the Negative Zone etc, but considering the path the MCU has taken from Phase 4 on, I think it's very unlikely I'll get the movie I want.

I assume Reed Richards "the smartest man in the world" who was pathetically killed off like a moron in 10 seconds in MOM, will be a weak bumbling moron and the tone of the movie will be mostly snarky comedy at the expense of the characters (at least the male characters anyway).

This formula has gotten stale quick for me and most viewers I believe and if Marvel doesn't shake things up soon, they'll be fading into obsurity soon.

Very Excited for the Far from Dead Marvel Studios Fantastic Four movie. We will need them in a World War Hulk movie.

@AllsGood -
Eh, at this stage a World War Hulk movie is more likely to be about Bruce Banner dying and Skaar getting angry and fighting people - especially given how they forced Skaar into the ending of She-Hulk... like wtf even was that?

@Scarilian - SURE!

@AllsGood -
They've already replaced the role of Hulk in terms of an Avengers team-up and killing off Hulk while Skaar's actions in a 'World War Hulk' film would result in him leaving Earth would enable Kang Dynasty to focus primarily on She-Hulk's abilities as a 'Hulk'.

At the moment I would not be surprised if Captain America 4 does the set-up for this, we already have the return of Thunderbolt Ross, The Leader and Betty Ross.

It'd also allow for Secret Wars to bring in a variant of Hulk, most likely Lou Ferrigno's version of the Hulk from the 1978 TV series - they already have him prepared to do voice acting work for them and it'd just require using the Hulk's CGI model but with goofy hair.

@Scarilian - She-Hulk is needed because she is in the World War Hulk comics tries to stop him but loses badly.NO STOPPING THIS ANGRY HULK!

I am very worried about the movie. I don't trust Shakman as the director, and hearing they brought in a WandaVision writer worries me even more. If the cast isn't perfect, I'm definitely going to skip it. I've had my heartbroken enough when it comes to Fantastic Four. The movie really needs some name-grabbing talent, it doesn't really have it right now. Marvel Studios isn't the juggernaut it once was, and I don't think it will be enough to pull audiences to the theater.

I thought WandaVision was the best of the Disney Plus shows, so yeah got a pretty good writer.

Wandavision had a few good things, but on balance was average at best. I have no faith in Shakman to handle something this big & important.

The FF and X-Men have to be GREAT. If they screw up the FF after all the bungling with lousy D+ shows, Eternals, & Quanturdmania, & the whole multiverse mess, they are royally screwed.

I guess we have FalCap America & Thunderbolts to look forward to.

A part of me was expecting, or at least hoping, that the cast would be revealed basically the moment that the strike ends, but it’s good to know that we’ll get the news hopefully very soon after.
