FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Rumored To Feature Both Galactus And The Silver Surfer

Another Fantastic Four rumor here, this time relating to a couple of characters Marvel Comics fans have been waiting to see done justice on the big screen since The Rise of the Silver Surfer...

As fans of Marvel's First Family (im)patiently wait for some official updates on Marvel Studios' plans for the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, rumors continue to swirl, and this latest report claims that two major characters are set to make their MCU debuts alongside Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny.

According to Jeff Sneider on this week's episode of The Hot Mic podcast, the all-powerful Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer, will appear in the movie.

"I'm told that Matt Shakman is planning to go very cosmic with his Fantastic Four movie. Lots of 1960s elements, and that the film will feature both Galactus and the Silver Surfer."

If accurate, we assume the Eater of Worlds will serve as the main villain, but if the story stays faithful to the comics, the Surfer will also take on an antagonistic role - initially, at least.

Sneider also commented on the recent writer change, with Avatar: The Way of Water's Josh Friedman taking over from Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.

"Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer's draft of Fantastic Four was fine, but they brought in that new writer to get it to the level that Kevin Feige and Matt Shakman wanted. Marvel is still open to working with Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer again."

We've previously heard that a Disney+ Special Presentation featuring both Galactus and Silver Surfer was in development, so it's entirely possible that the characters will only have fairly minor roles in FF to set up that spin-off.

Fantastic Four is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 14, 2025. Production has been confirmed to commence early next year.

I'm all for going cosmic. Think they should keep Galactus as a threat for later though. Although that doesn't stop them from introducing him I suppose.

Also, think it could be interesting if the Fantastic Four left Earth in the 1960s and return in the 2020s, but only have aged slightly because of time dilation.

@bkmeijer1 - I like all of that.

@bkmeijer1 - Interesting scenario, creates a challenge for Reed Richards given his knowledge is 60 years outdated and has to adapt to an advanced science.

@MaxPaint - didn't even think of that, but indeed. He probably was the smartest man alive, but could very well be he isn't anymore

@bkmeijer1 - I mean Captain Marvel did already set up time dilation as an excuse, and I'm sure you could do a wonderful Joke about Reed Richards looking at modern technology and commenting how out of date it is compared to his tech, but I really don't want to attach the FF to the 60's. I'm not a fan of the fish out of water thing, especially for the Four.

@BobGarlen - true, but with Captain Marvel it wasn't really made into something that carried any narrative weight. Just an excuse to have her look the same.

But the fish out of the water thing has been done quite a few times now indeed, so any narrative weight that carries isn't a lot either.

@bkmeijer1 -
Love the idea of the relativity time dilation and yes, Galactus should be a bigger bad but I'm just not sure that they should stretch him out all that much. I say swing for the fences and he better be wearing outlandish purple armor is all I have to say.

@Goldboink - I think he is a perfect threat as a saga-capper, but that's not really a necessity. Though the same with Secret Invasion, and that is going in a fine direction as well now too I think.

Also, yes to the purple armor. Want him to as comic accurate as possible.

@bkmeijer1 -
The Galactus saga is more about the Silver Surfer than it is about the Big G. My fear is that they make him a Celestial and bring the larger Celestial saga into it.

@BobGarlen - Time dilation was the reason Cap Marvel never aged? I didn't even know that. Did they say that in one of the films? I just figured she had stopped aging due to her powers, somehow.

@Goldboink - honestly I wouldn't mind it if they make him a rogue Celestial or a Celestial responselinle for population check.

That should be it though. It's kinda like Ego was a Celestial. Sure it was mentioned, but played no huge narrative role after that

@ObserverIO - Maybe it was her powers, though hard to say when they use "Powers" as an excuse.

And hopefully they're more than a cameo. This could be THE movie for the MCU if it's done right.

@MaxPaint -
It sounds like absolute garbage honestly. Shoving in Galactus and the Silver Surface while also introducing the Fantastic Four. Presumably killing off or wasting both of them. Let alone Doctor Doom who presumably needs to be set-up for Secret Wars.

@Scarilian - We need Doom stat.
