Ioan Gruffud Comments On Fantastic Four Reboot, Offers Advice For Next Mr Fantastic!

The Welsh actor shares his thoughts on the rumours that Fox will be rebooting the Fantastic Four franchise without him and the rest of the previous cast and offers some advice to the next actor who will play Reed Richards...

"It's very sad for me personally, and for the rest of the cast. But hey, these things have to move on, progress and evolve, and I wish them all the best."

"Those were fantastic years of my life working on those movies, and they made a hell of a lot of money worldwide for the studios. It was a great sort of business model, and bringing that sort of comic book to life, what a thrill to be able to do that, because that’s been around for almost fifty years now, I’m very proud of that experience."

And what advice does he have for the next actor to play Reed Richards?

"Do lots of yoga!"

the guy wasn't as bad as some people making him out to be, he was OK. But theres certainly better actors out there who would suit the role more

Lol, sorry/thanks HAWKS! :)

This guy is a decent enough actor (not a huge fan of his though) but was completely miscast as Reed. Hell, the only decent part of either of the films was Chris Evans and the Silver Surfer. The sequel was much better, but the whole Galactus cloud thing ruined it for me. :P Fingers crossed that Fox scrap the reboot and Marvel Studios get the rights back!

Somehow, I don't think this reboot is going to be all that sad for Chris Evans :-P

I hate Reed as much as i hated Gruffud in the role. So i guess he was a perfect fit LOL Seriously though, i know some of you felt he didn't portray Reed correctly. What would he have had to change about his performance? Cause the little i've seen and read of Reed, actually was correctly portrayed by him. I'm just curious is all.
TANKGIRL

Kerry Washington and Jessica Alba were the only miscast

I actually quite liked the cast of these films (discounting Alba, of course).

However, the plots were absolutely atrocious, so I'm glad there will be a reboot. And if the franchise stays with Fox, I hope they follow their Wolverine business model and hire a very talented director who (hopefully) follows the source material more closely and gives the films some genuinely good entertainment.

I agree with Shaman on this one. I may draw fans anger on this one but I think the actors nailed the uneasy campiness of the FF characters in the films. They both failed in other areas but outside of Alba lacking the correct look, the teams portrayal was spot on IMO. I have always found it difficult to take them serious in the comics and thats exactly how I felt about the movies.

Regardless of the quality, at least America puts out these movies. Don't be a hater.

anyone notice Reed pop in the Earth's Mightiest most recent episode? And I think they had a quick flash of Johnny Storm too.

The main problem with the FF movies hasn't been with the casting so much as with 1) the direction by Tim Story 2) the scripts were weak and 3) the production, as overseen by the Fox executives, was, as always, terrible! I, like so many others here, would love to see Fox just not go ahead with the reboot but we're more likely to end up with another Roger Corman-like FF travisty before Marvel gets it back :-(

weaponx5203- Hey you awesomely talented artist you, how you doin'??? Nice to see you on here, aside from DeviantArt ;)

Hawks- Yeah i'd really love to know what Reed fans have in mind in regards to how he should be portrayed. I just don't see Crudup being "better" than Gruffud. As good, yes. But "better"? How exactly? He wasn't anymore astonishing in Watchmen than Gruffud was as Reed, really.
Ryden
Ryden - 2/2/2011, 9:13 AM
@Shaman- I'm with you, Reed Richards is a very bland character, which is why Ultimate Ff is one of the few Ultimate series I prefer over the 616. Reed and the rest were given a little bit more depth, they should base the reboot on that.

@Shaman

One way to vastly improve on Reed Richards is to make Mr. Fantastic actually sound smart. They way he was written in FOX's Fantastic Four made him sound like a 5th grade science nerd. He needs to actually be convincing as the world's smartest man. He doesn't have to be the most funny or interesting guy. That's why you've got Johnny Storm and Benn Grimm.

BTW I do think that Reed Richards is given a quality of depth in the comics that the movies also need to start picking up on. Before he's a scientist, he is a father, and I always found that admirable about him.

P.S: Adrien Brody for Mr. Fantastic!!

I personally think Ioan was good as Reed Richards. Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis were great as Storm and Grimm and Jessica Alba was ok as Sue, but would not have been my first choice. If anything, I blame the director for how the films were; average at best, bad art worst. I would have made the Mole Man the villain in the second film.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/2/2011, 10:11 AM
indoraptor12- So that means the fault doesn't really lie with him as an actor then... It's kinda like how Singer wanted Routh to act like Reeve.
SmokinIndo
SmokinIndo - 2/2/2011, 10:22 AM
As far is getting the team aspect down, the FF movies did OK. But honestly, the only thing they really got right was the Benn Grimm and Johnny Storm relationship. I couldn't stand every second that Reed and Sue were together. Ioan Gruffund and Jessica Alba have horrible chemistry together. I got a better vibe from Evans and Alba, which is NOT a good thing.

As far as individual teammates are concerned, the movies were 50/50. Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm were decent enough. Mr. Fantastic was shit. So was Susan Storm. Jessica Alba was horribly miscast. I'm sorry, but she doesn't look smart at all. And it's not because she's hot. But you know... if you wanna cast an intelligent woman, you need an actress who's famous for MORE than just her tits and ass. Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, and Rachel McAdams all would have been good for this role. Jessica Alba suited the role just as much as Megan Fox would have.

@Shaman

Not only that, but I don't think Ioan Gruffud is a good actor at all. Granted, he didn't have much to work with, but he didn't have to be a tree with every single line he delivered. He might be better in some of the other movies that I haven't seen, but his performance in FF was pretty darn weak.

Like Shaman, I hate Richards and although Ioan seems like a cool guy he flat out sucked in the role. Bland as [frick].

@Ryden: DUDE I AGREE! ultimate ff was my fav of the ult books (sorry spidey) as it took a team i had lost all interest in and made them fresh and fun again. the run is far from flawless but i dig the creative choices made in the re-imagining, no single mistep ruined the series for me.

as for the cast discussions; i loved the thing. he was just how i would want him live action. just wish they gave him more to do, plot wise and action wise. ioan is a great actor who just did his best in a movie thats script could have used another polish and whose director was the wrong fit. no issues with him at all.
ioan will be missed only cause i don't really think we have seen what he could have done with the role had better talent been involved in the filmaking department.

an actor is only as good as the talent around him

I didn't realize that quite a few people dislike the Fantastic Four. I mean... they are the heart of the Marvel Universe. I ask you guys, have ya'll read Mark Waid's run? He made me fall in love with the FF.
Shaman
Shaman - 2/2/2011, 11:11 AM
indoraptor12- I guess he's better in certain roles, like in King Arthur. As an actor, he delivered his lines as well as the others in FF, IMHO. The whole film/plot/dialog/direction sucked so i just don't see him as being "wrong" for the role when comparing his performance to the rest of the cast. I think they were all told to act a certain way given the fact that McMahon couldn't have possibly been more of a failiure yet was still a convincing antagonist. And Gruffud was consistant in his performance from top to bottom as if he was following a strict blueprint, even though it was apparently the wrong one. If his performance had varied all over the place and he hadn't kept his consistancy, then i would have said he sucked as an actor. And i just don't see that huge of a difference between the character in the books/cartoons and the one he played. But then again, i haven't been jumping at the chance of reading any FF book i could get my hands on. So i guess i could be wrong.

Ror- True, consistantly bland he certainly was. I remember watching the first FF film for the first time and telling myself "Good ol' FF. Why am i watching this again?".

Somehow I don't think Chris Evans is too broken up about this. Anyway, while Gruffud wasn't great, he wasn't terrible either.

Blame Rise Of The Silver Surfer. No Galactus, no props. I thought the first Fantastic Four was quite decent. It was fun and action packed. I think they should forget the reboot since they wanna make the Thing cgi. F--k that!
