FANTASTIC FOUR: Kevin Feige Confirms That Upcoming MCU Reboot Will Not Be An Origin Story

An intriguing update on Marvel Studios' plans for The Fantastic Four here, as Kevin Feige has confirmed that the upcoming reboot will not be another origin story for Marvel's First Family...

The Fantastic Four reboot was given an official release date during San Diego Comic-Con this past Saturday, but we still know very little about Marvel Studios' plans for the team in The MCU. However, Kevin Feige has now provided a very interesting update.

While speaking to THR, the studio head confirmed something many fans of Marvel's First Family have been hoping to hear for quite a while: the new movie will not be another origin story.

“A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?” said Feige, comparing this new take on the heroes to Marvel Studios' pact with Sony to bring Spider-Man into the MCU. “We’ve set a very high bar for ourselves with bringing that to the screen.”

The tale of how Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm gained their amazing abilities played out in the first of 20th Century Fox's movies, and then again in the disastrous 2015 reboot, so Feige and co. clearly feel there's no need to retread over old ground. Of course, this may also suggest that we'll meet the members of the super-group prior to the 2024 film.

John Krasinski appeared as Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and while the A Quiet Place actor has denied any knowledge of his potential return, we'd be very surprised if he didn't reprise the role. A rumor has also done the rounds that Jason Segel will debut as The Thing in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Right now, Marvel is said to be actively searching for a new director to replace Jon Watts, who parted ways with the project earlier this year.

Fantastic Four is expected to commence production next year.

I do hope they allude to it in some way, especially if they do the Quantum Realm instead of space or the Negative Zone as their origin of power (only say that because it would tie nicely to Kang in Quantumania though).

Also, if they skip the origin story, I think it would interesting to see Reed's dad and the Richards kids too. Could lead to some fun dynamics we haven't really seen before.

Then you need to give a reason why they havent been around

Although they said they were done with origins near the end of phase 2 and every new hero did get an origin

Doctor Strange was a straight up origin movie
Captain Marvel's origin was just told out of order
Civil War was basically built on the basics of Black Panther's origin

maybe they have been traveling the multiverse, or maybe they have been in hiding the cure themselves of their condition

@dracula - travelling the Multiverse, or maybe even just the Quantum Realm, could work.

Maybe in case of the latter, they started doing that after good pal Hank Pym fifured out Quantum Realm travel in 2018.

@dracula - I think an origin story that also Involves time travel from the 60s would be for the best. It's not only explaining their powers but also the culture shock and identifying themselves in a world with the kind of powers they just received.

Hell, maybe they get the idea of forming a team because the avengers aren't a thing anymore.

@dracula - Civil War has no connection to Black Panther's origin, T'Challa had been BP for years at that point.

Unless you mean his origin as king.

@EskimoJ - i guess his origin as king but really the death of t’chaka is his origin in the comics.

Its like they just spread parts of his origin all over the place and out of order

Considering post t’chaka’s death was the first time we saw him suit up, it might as well have been his origin

@dracula - The Quantum Realm theories have been going around in the last 2-3 years of maybe why they're not around.

They can still be explorers with their powers, without officially being the F4 yet too. But yes, so glad we're skipping the origin. A quick flashback can cover everything a casual moviegoer needs to know.

The origin from the 2005's Fox film was a little more accurate than the reboot from 2015, minus the part of in both instances Doom being the 5th member of the team that went with them.

But still the 2005 version edges out because at least they went to space which is where they were bathed in that cosmic wave, the other made them go to another dimension which isn't accurate to the comics.

No idea when and where they'll first show up though. But maybe they'll cross paths with Scott and the others in Quantumania.
