Millennium Films finally managed to get its Red Sonja reboot into production earlier this year, with Revenge star Matilda Lutz taking over from Ant-Man and the Wasp's Hannah John Kamen as the fearsome warrior of the title.
We recently got a first look at Lutz as Sonja via an official promo image, and we now have word on a new addition to the cast.
THR (via SFFGazette.com) reports that German star Veronica Ferres (Rossini, Crisis, Salt & Fire) has signed on to play the Goddess Ashera... and the She-Devil with a Sword's mother?
The trade certainly makes it sound like both characters are one and the same, but this would be a pretty significant alteration to the original story, so perhaps Ferres is simply playing dual roles?
M.J. Bassett is directing, and the cast also features Wallis Day as Annisia, Robert Sheehan as Draygan, Michael Bisping as Hawk, Martyn Ford as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu as Amarak, and Rhona Mitra in an undisclosed role.
Brigitte Nielsen previously played Red Sonja in the 1985 movie of the same name, but this new project is being described as "more an adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s original Marvel comic than a reboot of the 1985 feature."
“I’ve wanted to make a Red Sonja movie since I was a teenager — she has been a powerful presence for me and a character that I have always wanted to bring to the screen with my own voice and vision. When I met Matilda Lutz, I knew she had all the magic I was looking for and could see the complexity and depth she would bring to Sonja,” Bassett said in a statement when production kicked-off.
Production is currently underway in Bulgaria, but no release date has been announced.
