During an interview with comicbookresources.com while promoting the Dynamite Entertainment's comic series Red Sonja, Luke Liebman gave a brief update on the film adaptions of Thusa Doom and Red Sonja starring Rose McGowan.
In 2008, it was first announced that Rose McGowan would star as the bikini-clad female barbarian warrior, a film that would be produced by Robert Rodriguez and director Doug Aarniokoski.
Two years later, Red Sonja is still in development and according two reports, Rodriguez and Aarniokoski are out with McGowan still hoping to star in the film, which would likely be following the new Conan the Barbarian reboot.
Despite this, there is a glimmering hope that the film will see the light of day, with Luke Lieberman saying that they are currently discussing possible directors for the film based on the 2006 comic series from Dynamite Entertainment, and also mentions there is a Thulsa Doom script and they are currently looking for financing partners. Actor Djimon Hounsou, who has expressed and intrest to play the character, has recently confirmed that there is also a script that he owns the rights to.
"It sounds like they are lining up a new director for 'Sonja.' I think 'Conan' is hitting theaters soon, and if that proves itself in the market, it will bode well for both 'Sonja' and 'Thulsa.' On 'Thulsa,' we just finished the script and are looking for financing partners. Hollywood is always 'hurry up and wait.' Using 'Conan' as an example, this new incarnation took more than 10 years to hit screens. Warners had it, put it through countless rewrites and directors, Warners lost it, now Lionsgate is finally releasing it."
McGowan can currently be seen in threates playing a street junkie in the indie thriller
Dead Awake alongside Nick Stahl and Amy Smart. She can next be seen in the
Conan the Barbarian reboot as a powerful evil witch that battles Conan, which hits theaters August 19 next year.
