The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug hits theaters this December.

I was not at all impressed with him in STID. His long, drawn out facial expressions / enunciation looked like Jim Carey was trying to act British.

Gotta love Motion Capture. When you can get a great actor to play an Ape or a Dragon, it's amazing to see on-screen.

He's a good actor, if I'm a cbm or would definitely have to be as joker or reverse flash, maybe brainiac.

Is it really necessary to motion capture? I can see it with Gollum and apes but a Dragon? How much facial recognition do you need for that?

If this is anything like his portrayal of Julian Assange, he'll be adding in a whole load of completely ridiculous inaccurate facial ticks and twitches which people will hail as "remarkably spot-on as to what a real dragon would be like".

@JaySin420, I'm pretty sure they didn't hire him so that people would know that it was him. Using your logic, Andy Serkis shouldn't have been Gollum because no one would know it was him. Or he shouldn't have been Cesar in Planet of the Apes or King Kong because no one would know it was him. He's doing it because of his voice and acting abilities.

What does any of this have to do with "anyone knowing it was him"? That's the weirdest logic I've heard in a while

No this isn't dumb, this is cool.

@thedarknight1939 - that's exactly why they need to do motion capture, cause the dragons not a human, but we need it to talk like a human. If they didn't do this it would be an awkward looking cheesy dragon talking like from Shrek.
Gigacrusher45
Gigacrusher45 - 10/22/2013, 1:15 PM
Yeah they will get much more personality into doing this then just having Cumberbatch do some voice over and that it.

Also JaySin, you don't really use logic in your life do you?
