HERCULES Is No Match For The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY; Remake Gets New Release Date

Originally set to open just one week after Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, Brett Ratner's Hercules (which stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the title role) has been given a new release date by Paramount. However, it will now face off against two other big blockbusters...

Box Office Mojo has revealed that Hercules has moved from August 8th, 2014 to July 25th, 2014. It's original release date meant that it opened just a week after Guardians of the Galaxy. A foolish decision, especially as Marvel Studios' movies have never really had any trouble with holding on to the top spot both with their most obscure releases AND against some pretty serious box office competition. However, the studio clearly aren't that concerned as this change of release date means that it comes out just seven days after X-Men: Days of Future Past and the final instalment in The Hobbit trilogy! Directed by X-Men: The Last Stand's Brett Ratner and starring Dwayne Johnson, the screenplay for Hercules was adapted by relative newcomer Ryan Condal from Radical Studio's graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Below is a description of that story.

Fourteen hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus, for this he received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. These men and woman never question where they go to fight or why or whom, just how much they will be paid. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It is time for this bunch of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen when they must train an army to become as ruthless and blood thirsty as their reputation has become.

So he is going to do for Hercules what he did for X3?

He should stick to stuff like this.

This is gonna get STOMPED by DOFP and THE HOBBIT 3! Ratner is gonna get beat by the very franchise he messed up. Oh, irony...

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is NOT a house name as "Avengers" (Due to the last success) or even "Hercules"...Sure GOTG will have Marvel written all over them but how do you know the turn out wontbe like "the Watchmen?"...I loved the watchmen. But, almost everyone in that theatre that knew NOTHING about the Watchmen nor picked up a graphic novel or cared enough to read it walked out of that theatre.

This a very smart move, because if Hercules comes out first and it ends up surprisingly being good (I know it's Ratner and all)....BUT, if it ends up being good it could steal the spotlight from GOTG.

Ps - I vote Jason Momoa as DRAX!!! Bring it on!!! Hoping success for both franchises :D

Either way when the movie tanks or doesn't do well they'll have Marvel to blame.

Or The Rock
Or Bret Rattner
Or the script

Or anything else.

Who gives a crap about this (if not for THE ROCK) but real issue is HOBBIT 3 & X:Men DOFP coming out same day... I can Guarantee its NOT gona happen eventually!

I hope WB takes Hobbit 3 into December; & Fox's X-Men should stay as Summer film!
Brain Singer has a good releationship with WB; so he might convince them!

But if WB aren't interested in changing then X:MEN need to find another date soon; cus clawing with last Hobbit is gona be a suicide, & given how BIG & EPIC X:Men DOFP is going to be; if it failed due to a clash then NO X:Men film for another decade can turn out big bucks!

Quoting from Netflix's HOUSE of CARDS; X-Men is Big Fish but HOBBIT is a Whale!
Don't mess with it; especially when it's the LAST one!

So I hope Hobbit goes to Christmas 2014, or else X:Men need to get out of the way ASAP! Secure another important date!

Don't let ur stupid Mind kill ur Franchise... FOX!!

just move the movie back to 2015 to free up the rocks schedule, so that he can be availiable and cast as Drax for GOTG. Rock does Filming for Hercules in 2014 whilst being in GOTG in 2014. Works for everyone.

Man I just saw that headline and thought Marvel and James Gunn got The Rock to play Drax.

Same here. Disappointed, can't believe studios still throw money at Ratner

He's a better actor in the ring.

I honestly do not see Guardians of The Galaxy being a huge Box office hit. They are just not as popular of characters to attract alot of people. I predict it will suffer Green Lantern syndrome. Hopefully I am wrong and it is a great movie though.

Rock should be playing Drax instead of messing w/ Ratner. And X:DoFP and The Hobbit will both come out on the same day? WOW! I'm excited for both movies, but not sure which one I want to see at midnight.

Hercules seems like one of those movies I wouldn't even want to watch for free. Not saying it couldn't be mediocre to good, hell even great, just not that interested in non comic book movies. Guardians however looks hella tighttttttttttt !!!!!!!!!!!!!! My prediction is close to billion. Not quite Avengers level cash but defenitely balling status.
GL could of been so much more than it was. What a slap in the face to the genre.

I (heart) Greek Mythology

However, I dont like the premise nor the director. DJ is coolbeans and all, but there's no freaking way this is on my radar for any reason whatsoever.

Make it MARVEL's Hercules, Cho and baby wolf and and we got ourselves a picture ;} Incredible Herc FTW

@SUPERBATSPIDERMAN Ya I agree with what you're saying, I just have a feeling that Marvel will really leverage the existing franchises to draw the common viewer in to GOTG but I have the same concern as you. I've not read much of GOTG at all and never thought I'd see a movie from em.

Wish Marvel had FF. There would be epicness never seen before in life.

Rock, you NEED to play Drax. Your career is okay, right, but you do Drax and you become a super star, you do Hercules and you're one step away from being a middle aged Stallone.

Not that I want this to happen but what if they left the date and it bombed cuz final Hobbit will crush it no problem, any chance it would make Fox let it revert back to Marvel?

@FreakingIntelligentRobertGriffin True, but Ratner has done nothing to earn respect back and at the end of the day he let that movie crash and burn. 2 ended on such a high and 3 had more misses than hits.
