Interesting enough, neither one of these characters appear in the original version of The Hobbit from J.R.R. Tolkien. However, Legolas is an elf, a race of Middle-earth that's immortal and show signs of age very slowly. An elf isn't considered an adult until they're 100 years-old. And with the events of The Lord of the Rings taking place a mere 60 years after The Hobbit, it's not unthinkable that Legolas would be alive and well during that time. The female elf, Tauriel, is an entirely new character created by Jackson to bring some femininity to the otherwise, male-dominated, original tale from Tolkien.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all - a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas. The film also stars (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Lawrence Makoare, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O'Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, and Aidan Turner.

Stop complaining about everything.the movie tells a different story and if you don't like it stop posting stupid comments. And for the acting I think you guys should shut up. That's how elves talk, and seriously I'm a marvel fan as much as the next guy but chris hemsworth's acting for thor didn't always sound great rather.

@intruder

The twitter reactions from critics (like EW, Variety) are pretty good atm. Most say it's better than AUJ. It will definitely be a solid movie.

@Breznican: Okay, Hobbit 2 ... That's more like it. [ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY]

@jerslater: It's basically a three hour action movie. Smaug is incredible. The last hour is basically Jurassic Park in Middle Earth.

@Variety_DMcNary: Strong positive reaction to 'Desolation of Smaug', especially action sequences. [VARIETY]

@jerslater20m: So, um...guys? DESOLATION OF SMAUG is f****** awesome.

@Breznican: The barrel escape in #TheHobbit pt 2 is a thrilling and hysterical set piece - what the train fight in Lone Ranger hoped to be

I have by now officially decided not to see this on the big screen. I really don't want to annoy the people who are genuinely excited about this with my constant bitching.

From what I've spoiled myself so far they're just going too far with the additions and changes for me to really enjoy it. And my favourite character besides Bilbo looks ridiculous and nothing like himself. Guess in the end I'll watch the whole trilogy on blu-ray someday.

There are likely scenes in every movie I love, and I'd say they're going to be 1.) Riddles in the Dark, 2.) Bilbo & Smaug, 3.) a certain battle, or parts of it (if they don't [frick] it up)
