THE LORD OF THE RINGS Director Peter Jackson Reveals He Was Ghosted By THE RINGS OF POWER Producers

The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has revealed that he was asked to be part of Prime Video's The Rings of Power, but was ghosted by producers after asking to see some scripts for the show...

Fans are understandably excited for Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, though many have been left disappointed that Peter Jackson has no direct involvement with the show. He helmed the big screen trilogy and The Hobbit movies, and as this show has clearly taken its visual cues from his take on Middle-earth, why isn't he a producer at least?

Well, it's now been revealed that the series' producers ghosted the filmmaker!

Talking on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Jackson revealed that he and Fran Walsh (who co-wrote The Lord of the Rings movies) were approached and asked if they'd like to be involved. However, the director had one simple request before agreeing to anything.

"I said, 'That’s an impossible question to answer without seeing a script,'" Jackson recalled, saying they promised to send over the first few scripts. However "they never showed up." He'd add, "That’s the last thing I heard, which is fine." Asked if he holds any ill will towards The Rings of Power, the director said, "No complaints at all."

Amazon was quick to respond to these remarks (before fans presumably started losing their minds) to say, "In pursuing the rights for our show, we were obligated to keep the series distinct and separate from the films. We have the utmost respect for Peter Jackson and The Lord of The Rings films and are thrilled that he is looking forward to watching The Rings of Power."

It appears involving Jackson could have created some complicated legal issues, but ghosting him? It's not exactly their best move. Still, he clearly isn't holding a grudge and appears to have moved on from Middle-earth (though we don't currently know what his next project is going to be).

The show, adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic series of novels, takes place during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This story is set to follow a cast made up of established and new characters as they "confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth" (a.k.a. Sauron).

The series boasts a massive ensemble, while J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay are set to serve as showrunners. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on September 2.

Ahh.... it's all starting to make sense now. Ghosting the one person who's the sole reason that anyone gives a shit about this franchise screams insanity.

I’m hoping this show is finally what gets me into LoTR. I got close with the first 2 Hobbit movies but every time I’ve tried to watch past Fellowship of the Ring I fall asleep. I don’t think they are bad movies the world is really cool but for some reason I have trouble getting invested in the franchise.

@Ha1frican - I genuinely don't think the show will get you into the franchise if the original trilogy didn't. The lotr movies are a pretty faithful representation of the books, and this new show isn't represented in the books at all beyond vague references. I'm just saying, it's possible you might just not be a fan of this franchise.

@Origame - It’s more see the pacing I have issues with so I think it being spaced out as episodes will make that a lot easier to digest. Again I like the world I often just have trouble sitting that long and taking it in all in one shot. I enjoyed the first 2 hobbit movies they were much easier to digest than the original trilogy imo. Fellowship was pretty light but Two Towers just felt like ages of nothing happening every time I’ve tried to finish it as an adult which then leads to me not really getting to Return of the King.

I genuinely don't get what's going on with these people. Like, ok, if you don't wanna talk to Jackson that's fine. But why reach out to him, tell him he can see the script, then nothing?
