THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER Star Promises More Action And Higher Stakes In Second Season

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power star Sophia Nomvete shares her thoughts on the upcoming second season, revealing that fans can expect the pace to pick up and a lot more in the way of action.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was supposed to be Amazon Prime Video's Game of Thrones-beater, with the streamer spending enough for it to reportedly become the most expensive series ever made.

When the small screen prequel debuted last September, it delivered Prime Video's biggest-ever debut in what Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke called "a very culturally defining moment" for the company. However, we later found out that The Rings of Power lost a massive number of viewers as the season progressed.

The show had only a 37% completion rate in the U.S. Overseas, only 45% of people finished the series, with 50% typically deemed an okay, but far from desired, result.

With that in mind, it's not overly surprising changes are being made to the upcoming second season. Talking to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Disa actor Sophia Nomvete has promised fans they can expect to see the pace pick up when The Rings of Power returns to Prime Video next year.

"Season 1 was a time of relative peace, an introductory time meeting everybody," she says. "Season 2 is the unravelling of it all. It’s when the force of evil really starts to put pressure on Middle Earth and we watch how everyone that we know and hopefully love handles that situation."

"The stakes are higher. We see what that force of evil does to each race and to each relationship. There’s so much more action," Nomvete adds. "We weathered the storms, and there’s a real sense of confidence in who and what we are. I’m really excited about it."

That sounds very promising, and with production moving from New Zealand to the UK, the second season having a very different feel is inevitable. With the mystery surrounding Sauron now solved, it's also easy to imagine a more exciting story in this next batch of episodes.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is meant to be here for the long haul, but if season 2 doesn't perform well for the streamer, it could reach a premature end.

As of now, Prime Video has not announced a return date for the show.

The only thing culturally defining about season 1 was how it 💩 on Tolkien’s legacy. Other than some nice VFX in a few episodes, there was nothing else to like about the show.

@mountainman - yeah exactly. If anything, this shows the audience they were trying to cater to either doesn't exist or is too small to justify the ridiculous costs.

I consider this project the toilet flush that's moving us past this woke bs. But then again, we might not get there until Mark Wahlberg starts his "new hollywood" so we can get some genuine competition.

@Origame - ESG scores my man. This stuff won’t truly end while big financial interests like Black Rock are funding it. It’s how Bud Lights sales can be down 30% and the stock hasn’t tanked. These financial interests will support any brand that pushes “the message”. So movies can tank. Streaming services can fail. Brands can lose billions in sales. But they will get bailed out and their all-important ESG score will remain high because they towed the line.

@mountainman - I'm not sure what the expectation was. Going in it was known they didn't really have much latitude in terms of the stories they could tell based on the rights they acquired. No amount of money and vfx was gonna fix that. I laugh whenever someone says the legacy is being shat on. Who gave them the rights to lay said shat? This seems to be a recurring thing with most fantasy shows, and shows in general. We know what you want better than you do, and we'll show you. Smh...

@The1st - When a bad product is released, it tarnished the IP. More explanation than this is unnecessary.

They should insert some urgency or stakes like War of Elves and Sauron into the second season. First season felt like reading a wiki page.

"a very culturally defining moment"

More paraphrased rethoric that lacks any true meaning, just a demagogic phrase thrown without actual thought, like this show, all visuals with no true depth in the story. And having an uncharismatic constipated face as a lead character doesn't help either.

Tolkien is rolling in his ashes.

Nothing can save this show apart from ending it.

You wouldn't let a dog suffer like this.

Such a misguided show. Maybe if they weren’t so interested in trying to photocopy all four quadrants of the LOTR brand while anchoring the narrative around a truly unlikable protagonist’s out of place revenge story, then they could have made something that people actually wanted to watch.

If they wanted to do a show called Rings of Power then it should have been anchored around Celebrimbor’s story leading to the War of the Elves and Sauron. (If they really wanted a female lead then they could have made Celebrimbor female, which would have been less egregious than trying to contort the story around a vengeful Galadriel.) But the fundamental problem is that Amazon wanted sanitized Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings Edition and they hired two hack writers (by all accounts) to do it. And that just isn’t the LOTR story.

I gave the first season a try hoping for the best but I ended up like this when I saw what Amazon was doing to JRRTs legacy.

It's so sad seeing the actors have to defend these Weak Ass shows they signed up for.
Sure, they got paid, but imagine having to pretend that this Nothing Garbage had some way of progressing forward.

They got hired on some affirmative scheme, but now they look like a bunch of idiots holding the bag.
LOL.

Just wait until next year, when they start blaming the cancellation of the show on racism or some other silly shit.

This show still has the pure audacity to still call itself "Lord of the Rings".
