Universal Pictures has released the first official teaser trailer for Stephen Gaghan's upcoming adventure film, Dolittle, which stars 2x Academy Award-nominee Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers: Endgame) as the titular doctor who can talk to animals.

The film will pickup approximately seven years after Dr. John Dolittle (Downey) exiled himself in his own manor following the tragic loss his wife, with only exotic animals to keep him company. However, when the young queen (Jessie Buckley) falls ill, he's forced out of retirement to set sail  with his animal friends toward a mythical island in search of a cure.

In addition to our former Iron Man, the film also stars Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro), Michael Sheen (Underworld), Emma Thompson (Late Night), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), John Cena (Fast & Furious 9), Kumail Nanjiani (The Eternals), Octavia Spencer (Ma), Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Craig Robinson (The Office), Ralph Fiennes (The King's Man), Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) and Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises), amongst others.

Robert Downey Jr. electrifies one of literature’s most enduring characters in a vivid reimagining of the classic tale of the man who could talk to animals: Dolittle.

After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk’s Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar® winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar® winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar® winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante.

The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen (The Queen) and Oscar® winner Jim Broadbent and features additional voice performances from Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, Carmen Ejogo, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, and Craig Robinson.

Directed by Academy Award® winner Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Traffic), Dolittle is produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum under their Roth/Kirschenbaum Films (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent) and Susan Downey (Sherlock Holmes franchise, The Judge) for Team Downey. The film is executive produced by Robert Downey Jr., Sarah Bradshaw (The Mummy, Maleficent) and Zachary Roth (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil).

Looks like a disaster, like that Peter Pan movie with Hugh Jackman from a while back

I'm getting "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" vibes here. Seems grounded, but whimsical... Which is a paradox, but this still has my attention. What a cast tho.

I don't know if Dr. Dolittle needed this kind of big epic-feeling blockbuster treatment but I'll give it a shot.
and I thought it was a Disney movie but surprisingly it's made by Universal. I guess having the producers of previous Disney movies do that.

@Spidey91 - I think studios only think audiences and kids react to movies if the trailer is “epic” and has those big blasting moments

Robert Downey Jr is Jack Sparrow's medicated cousin.

@Battabing - oh I'm sure Sparrow's been plenty "medicated" himself since day one

Sparrow self medicates with Jamaican rum.

@ImmovableForce - that's what I was thinking while watching. It was hard to form an opinion. It just looks like a grand epic

a movie where someone rides an ostridge into a mansion can't be all that bad.

well, whispering all the dialog is certainly... AN approach.

and I'm sure it's tooootal coincidence he pulled the same exact hat-flip-move in Sherlock Holmes... :-p

I dunno, I was never by any means in a rush to see this, despite my RDJ fandom. and most of you probably know, this thing has had a shit ton of reshoots. As in not anything at all like the little window that Marvel gives itself a few months before release on all of their movies for little pickups. It still managed to escape the apparently new modern Star Wars curse and have its director fired, but they were in panic mode on this thing for a long time.
I suppose the later trailers will determine if I even bother to watch this on DVD.

I've always been fond of the Rex Harrison lead musical so the lack of a two headed dancing llama is already something of a disappointment. Looks better than the Eddie Murphy version, at least.

Is the original Doolittle a grand epic? I've never seen it. Eddie Murphy is my Doolittle

@MyCoolYoung - The original one's an epic musical

It was a pretty giant failure though, Lindsay Ellis did a good video on it

@tmp3 - I see Robert's reboot is more in vein of the original. Eddie's changed up everything. Watching the 24 minute video now. Are you a film student?
